The nation’s air traffic control system is losing controllers faster than it can hire people, according to the Air Traffic Controllers union.“If we don't have enough controllers to open all the positions and we have to combine up positions we have to reduce the capacity,” said Paul Rinaldi, the union’s president.He says the effects of not enough controllers have affected flights in the past."We have seen some situations last summer where we didn't have enough controllers at the facility where airlines did cancel flights," he said. "Right now we're at a 30-year low of certified controllers in a system."In 2017, 1,848 controllers left the job due to retirements, promotions or other reasons, according to the FAA’s Controller staffing report released this year.The FAA hired 1,880 people to be new controllers last year. That’s a gain of 32 controllers. But of the number hired, the FAA lost 735 people who did not pass the required training academy.Only 1,145 passed, far fewer than the number of controllers who left the job last year."We'll keep trying to keep up with attrition and we haven't been able to do that," Rinaldi said.He says if the problem isn’t addressed differently than it currently is, we can expect to be inconvenienced in the future when we fly."You will have some delays on the ground maybe even holding in the air depending on what the staffing looks at looks like at that facility," Rinaldi said. 1435

The presidential race remains too close to call, and vote totals show President Donald Trump's lead slowly evaporating in some key battleground states. In recent days, Trump has attempted to use his favorite social media platform to spread disinformation about the election process — but Twitter has fought back.Between early Tuesday morning — after polls had closed in most of the U.S. — and noon ET on Friday, Trump has sent a tweet or retweet 37 times. Twitter has applied disclaimers to 13 of those tweets.Of those disclaimers, 12 indicate that "some or all of the content" about the election in the President's tweet is "disputed" and possibly "misleading." Twitter also added a disclaimer noting that races in Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina remain too close to call to Trump's Wednesday morning tweet in which he "claimed" all three states "for Electoral Vote purposes." As of Friday, those states are still too close to call.Trump railed against Twitter's fact checks in a Friday morning tweet, saying the social media platform is "out of control."In many cases, Twitter has added disclaimers to Trump's tweets in the moments after the President sends them. The social media service began fact-checking Trump earlier this year, but prior to this week, it would often take several hours to apply disclaimers.Trump has attempted to sow doubt in the electoral process for months. On the campaign trail, he often argued without basis that mail-in ballots would be fraudulent.The President's attempt to discredit mail-in ballot appears to have had a partisan effect on mail-in voting. The House Intelligence Committee on Friday released a redacted version of the Republican report on the committee's year-long Russia investigation, in which, GOP members say, they found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia and disputed the intelligence community's findings that Vladimir Putin tried to help elect Donald Trump President.The committee released the report with redactions from the intelligence community, along with a redacted Democratic dissent disputing the Republican conclusions.Rep. Mike Conaway, the Texas Republican who led the committee's Russia probe, said in a statement that the intelligence community made "overzealous redactions" to the report, and the committee plans to challenge them to get more of the report declassified."Many of the redactions include information that is publicly available, such as witness names and information previously declassified," Conaway said.Republicans ended their investigation into Russia's 2016 election meddling last month, concluding they found no evidence that Trump's team had colluded with Russians."We found no evidence of collusion, and so we found perhaps some bad judgment, inappropriate meetings," Conaway said when they submitted their report for declassification.But Democrats say Republicans failed to interview key witnesses and issue subpoenas to obtain necessary information, and were not interested in uncovering collusion.
