URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – As colleges and universities are tasked with safely beginning classes, researchers at one school are ramping up testing. But they're putting away the nasal swab in exchange for a test they say can be scaled to perform thousands of tests a day with turnaround in just hours.College junior Alliyah Rumbolt-Lemond is already back on campus and regularly testing for COVID-19.“I know if you have in-person classes, you're going to be on campus, you have to get tested twice a week,” she says.The college junior is one of the more than 51,000 students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign returning to school during the pandemic, posing a logistical challenge for administrators.“It was very daunting,” said U of I chemistry professor Marty Burke.He was part of the team of university researchers who developed a two-step saliva-based COVID-19 test to tackle the problem.“We called this our ‘target, test and tell’ initiative, overall collectively described as a ‘Shield.’”The Shield Initiative needed to be scalable, and unlike the four-step nasopharyngeal swab tests, not vulnerable to supply chain bottlenecks.“It's a very powerful concept that if we can get to that fast, frequent testing, we really could get control of the situation,” said Burke.A quick stop on route to class or work, integrated with local health care agencies, students receive results on an app within hours, not days.“It takes about five to ten minutes to submit your saliva sample and then the results are typically back on your phone within three to six hours,” said Burke.The university’s veterinary school diagnostic lab has been converted into a full-scale human COVID-19 testing facility. It’s capable of processing some 10 to 20,0000 saliva tests per day.“I want to hang out with friends and do it the right way, like following CDC guidelines,” said Alliyah. “But I feel more comfortable saying ‘hey when's the last time you got tested?’”A total of 20 testing sites with 40 stations are set up across campus. Unique hardly describes the lawsuit Scarlett Watts and her attorney recently filed in Florida federal court.Scarlett Watts said she was only days late on her house payment when her mortgage company called looking for their money.  Watts describes the exchange between her and the debt collector as tense but nothing more. Later that day she received a string of obscene text messages.The texts called Watts vulgar names and mentioned her late bill not once but twice.She called the mortgage company and they denied any wrongdoing on behalf of their employee.Attorney Billy Howard has filed a harassment suit on Watt’s behalf against the lender based on Florida and federal law that makes it illegal for a debt collector to harass a borrower on their cell phone.Next Howard plans to subpoena phone records to determine if the texts may have come from a company phone or an employee's phone.Watts says she decided to take legal action to teach the texter a lesson and hopefully collect a few thousand dollars. Smith is really like most Americans, except he is completely blind.“It’s called retinitis pigmentosa,” Smith explained.It’s a hereditary disease that slowly stole his sight.“Usually, it starts out in the periphery and slowly works its way in until it’s like you’re looking through a tube,” he said.Smith has had to relearn just about everything in his life“You know, things like brushing your teeth, finding clothes to wear,” Smith said. “I probably don’t match very well here today.”Technology has become like a best friend.“I use technology from the moment I get up from probably the moment I go to sleep,” Smith said.This past election cycle, he tried something for the first time.“Anything new or different to a blind person is scary,” Smith said.He voted entirely on his mobile phone using an app called “Voatz”His country was among several in the country participating in the pilot program. The pilot program was for voters who are either disabled or overseas at the time of the election.“My county has historically been a bit of a mess when it came to elections,” said Utah County clerk Amelia Gardner Powers.Gardner Powers decided to try and clean things up.“We deliver your ballot to you on your phone, you mark your preferences on your phone and then you submit it back to us,” Gardner Powers said. “We actually print off your ballot using a ballot printer and run those through the scanner with all of our other ballots.”She says the response has been phenomenal, especially in a year like 2020“People’s access to the polls has been limited.
