QINGDAO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan-based EVA Airways Corp. Saturday launched a weekly direct flight service linking southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City and Qingdao City in eastern Shandong Province.The service will operate on Saturdays. It is the first direct service between the two cities.The flight will increase the number of direct flights between Qingdao and Taiwan to 20 per week, according to Qingdao Airport.Thanks to increased people-to-people exchange between Taiwan and the mainland, Qingdao Airport's passenger traffic to and from Taiwan this year reached 145,495 on Nov. 15, a 55 percent year-on-year increase.

TAIPEI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- On the eve of Taiwan's mayoral and city councilor elections, Sean Lien, son of Lien Chan, honorary chairman of Kuomintang (KMT) party, was reportedly shot in the face when he was campaigning for a KMT candidate in Taipei County Friday evening.He was being treated at a local hospital. Local media cited doctors as saying Sean Lien's brain was not injured and his injury would not endanger his life.A spokeswoman of the hospital where Sean Lien was treated said he was sober-minded when he was sent to the hospital. BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Sudanese Mining Minister Abdel-Bagi Gailani said here Monday that Sudan is seeking to strengthen cooperation with China in the mining sector.Sudan is a vast country with rich mineral resources, said the minister. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in charge of culture and publicity has called for innovations in reforming China's culture sector and for greater efforts in promoting the development of related industries.Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Friday while addressing a meeting of local publicity officials, according to a statement given to Xinhua on Saturday.Authorities should work for creating a "cultural atmosphere that improves scientific development and promotes social harmony," the official said.He added that efforts should be made to improve people's understanding of the importance and necessity of transforming China's economic growth mode and of the CPC Central Committee's Proposal for Formulating the 12th Five-Year Program for China's Economic and Social Development (2011-2015).The Proposal was adopted last month at the Fifth Plenum of the 17th CPC Central Committee.Further, Liu urged authorities to map out a blueprint for the reform and development of China's culture sector, in accordance with that proposal.

BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, China's cabinet, said Wednesday the forced eviction of farmers from their homes must be stopped and avoided during rural land maintenance.The rural land maintenance campaign should bring about higher incomes for farmers and more efficient agriculture and not go against farmers' will, the State Council, at a meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, said, according to a statement released after the meeting.Emphasis must be placed on farmland maintenance that aims to improve the ratio of high output farmland in rural areas, the statement said.Strict measures should be taken to protect farmland and boost its efficiency, the statement said, calling for integrated land maintenance that involves farmland, irrigation systems, roads, forests and villages.Moreover, the statement said government officials and related staff will be held accountable for violations.
