Many animal shelters are worried the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will cause a surge in pet surrenders, a stark contrast from when shelters saw record fostering and adoption rates four months ago."What we've seen since then is that the number of total dogs and cats that have come into shelters and rescues across the country has continued to decrease compared to the levels of 2019. So, fostering has stayed high but we just have fewer animals that we’re trying to get into foster care than the shelters had to last year," says Lindsay Hamrick with the Humane Society of the United States.Hamrick says animal control centers that shut down during the start of the pandemic are now back up and operating, but are still being selective about which animals need to be picked up."Intakes are still about 40% down compared to 2019 for both cats and dogs," says Hamrick.Valley Oak SPCA in Visalia, California, saw a record number of adoptions in June, nearly double what they had last year. But executive director Lydia House says they're concerned about the impact the economy will have in the coming months."We had a couple surrenders that said, 'I haven’t been able to feed my dog in three days. I have no money. I’m being evicted.' We did have some senior citizens who wanted to surrender their pets because they were afraid they were going to get [COVID-19] and not be able to take care of their pets," says House. The Humane Society of the United States has been closely following states that are lifting their eviction moratoriums as those states may see a boost in pet surrenders and strays."Surrenders that are related to evictions to not having enough money to be able to afford veterinary care - all of the pieces that come along with an economic downturn," says Hamrick.Overall, many shelters report with so many people working from home, adoptions and fostering of animals are still high. So the Humane Society of the United States is now urging animal lovers to think beyond shelter animals and focus on a neighbor or friend who may be going through a tough time."When someone loses their house or apartment, it's going to take months or even a year to find pet friendly housing again. So we’re really doing a push that people who are interested in fostering and had a good experience during the pandemic with taking care of other pets, to consider doing that for your neighbors. That way, possibly in the future, there can be a reunification of the pet with the family that they were separated from because of the economic issues," says Hamrick.Right now, more than half of states nationwide have lifted their eviction moratoriums. The Humane Society of the United States recommends supporting your local animal shelters as much as possible during this time to help get them and the animals through any economic hardship. 2850

LOUISVILLE, Ky -- A Kentucky judge delayed until Friday the release of secret grand jury proceedings in Breonna Taylor’s killing by police. That's according to the state Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office. Kentucky's Attorney General Daniel Cameron sought a delay of a week to enable names and personal information to be redacted from the recordings. Information to be redacted included phone numbers and addresses. The motion was filed Wednesday morning, the same day a Louisville court was expected to release the audio recordings. Cameron’s spokeswoman said Wednesday that a judge granted a shorter delay, giving the attorney general until noon Friday. 670

McDonald's is investing billion into their fast-food chains. Franchises across the country will be getting a new modern, high-tech look. The fast-food mogul says these updates will enhance the guest experience. Not only is it great for business, but it's great for communities. Franchise operator Laura Bucar says in her 40 years of doing business, McDonald's has never invested this much money into it's existing chains. "When we decide to move on anything, what that creates for the community, as far as jobs and resources, is incredible,” says Bucar. In order to create an incredible experience, McDonald's is investing millions of dollars into nearly every state to update their restaurants.“We just finished ours in July, and I can’t tell you how many electricians and plumbers locally that were sourced to come in, and even digital and technical people and so it really adds to the economy,” says Bucar. Each fast food restaurant is able to customize their artwork inside. Bucar is excited to give visibility to local artists. Not only is McDonald's offering jobs in the community for construction workers, but they are also adding a handful of positions inside their restaurants, too. They include mobile service pickup, table service and a guest enhancement lead (GEL). The GEL will help guest use the new kiosks to order their food when in a rush.  1432

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – About 250 miles above earth, the International Space Station remains in constant orbit around the planet.“It's an amazing facility,” said retired NASA astronaut Rex Walheim. “It's about the size of a five-bedroom house.”It’s an incredible feat of construction, involving space agencies from multiple countries and astronauts like Walheim, who flew three missions to the International Space Station.“The first portion of the space station program was basically constructing it,” Walheim said. “So, that was what I was most involved with, bringing pieces of the space station, doing spacewalks to bolt new pieces on and to activate them.”In the now 20 years since the space station welcomed the first crew, it’s become a place of valuable research for companies like Techshot.“The people that make the experimental instruments that go in there are people like Techshot,” said Dave Reed of Techshot. We visited Techshot’s facility near the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.Their work on the space station includes measuring bone loss, for use in developing treatments for osteoporosis.“Understanding osteoporosis is obviously of great interest to people on earth,” Reed said. “So, drug companies have been a lot of our customers.”Techshot also created a “bio fabrication facility,” which was installed on the space station.Using stem cells, the machine can 3D print human cartilage, a process that works best in a zero-gravity space environment. The idea is to eventually be able to 3D print whole organs that could be used in transplants.“It’s in the future, but it’s not as far away as you might think,” Reed said.Among the other things the space station astronauts have helped develop for use here on earth are advanced water purification systems, where they recycle 93% of the water on the station. Astronauts on board have also collected valuable data, like visual images, to help support first responders to natural disasters in the U.S. and around the world. Those are advances that might not be possible without the space station.“Young people today have never known a time when there hasn't been humans in space,” Walheim said. “That's really amazing.”It’s a whole generation who see humans living and working in space as an everyday part of life. 2288

MENOMINEE, Wis. -- A pair of Wisconsin friends claimed a million lottery ticket together in June, all thanks to a deal they made in the 90s.Wisconsin Lottery says Thomas Cook and Joseph Feeney shook hands in 1992, agreeing that if one ever won a Powerball jackpot, they would split the winnings, regardless of who bought the ticket. Cook bought a winning ticket on June 10 and won a cool million."He called me and I said, 'are you jerking my bobber?'" Feeney told Wisconsin Lottery.Cook gave his two-week notice and has since retired. Feeney was already retired from an area fire department. The pair have no "extravagant plans for the winnings," Wisconsin Lottery says. The pair chose the cash option and are each taking home .7 million after taxes. This story was originally published by Mayra Monroy at WTMJ. 827
