SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages and Connections Housing were gearing up to accommodate more than 160 additional homeless residents needing shelter Tuesday night due to forecasted rain, according to the San Diego Housing Commission. The commission activates its Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees and the chance of rain is higher than 40%, the temperature falls below 45 degrees regardless of the chance of rain or sustained high winds are predicted. The program is funded through a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Less than a week after fully reopening its schools, the Vista Unified School District reported a second COVID-19 case involving a Mission Vista High School student, leading to the quarantine of about 150 students and four teachers.According to the district, the second student tested positive for the illness on Sunday. That student attended school Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week and is not connected to the other case in a student confirmed last week, the district said."The parents notified us that the student likely contracted the virus while traveling on a club athletic team not affiliated with school," a district statement reads. "We immediately notified all parents, students and staff who may have come into contact with the student."While it is unlikely the student came into close contact with all 150 students and four teachers, the district said it was "proceeding with an abundance of caution" and placing all of them on a 14-day quarantine and pivot to Zoom and Canvas distance-learning classes.According to the district's COVID-19 safety dashboard, it has recorded five cases since Sept. 8, and just one since Oct. 20.The Vista Unified School District, fully reopened its 28 schools last Tuesday, eschewing some of the more cautious measures some other districts are taking, moving into its Phase 3 reopening plan. The "Vista Classic" plan allows every school in the district to reopen at full capacity. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 1.3 million ballots had been received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters by mid-afternoon today, with around 51,000 votes cast at polling locations so far.The San Diego County Registrar's Office reported 1.36 million ballots collected by mid-afternoon out of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county.With county polling locations open early, about 126,000 residents were able to cast their votes in person over the past four days, the Registar's Office said.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one. Voters who prefer to cast their ballots at their assigned polling place on Election Day can do so until 8 p.m.An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.County voters also have until 8 p.m. to drop off mail ballots at 125 drop-off locations throughout the county, which can found on the Registrar's website.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely.Voters casting ballots in person were instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance.Locations of vote centers were chosen and configured to allow for queuing and voting while maintaining six feet of social distance. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials in San Diego County reported 269 new COVID-19 infections Sunday, bringing the total to 54,583 since mid-February, and two new deaths, bringing the overall fatality total to 870.The two deaths were men reported to have died earlier this month. They ranged in age from late 60s to early 70s, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.Of the 10,819 new tests reported, 2% returned positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 2.7%. The 7-day daily average of tests is 11,127.Two new community outbreaks were confirmed, one in a health-care setting and the other in a restaurant. In the past seven days -- Oct. 18 through Oct. 24 -- 26 community outbreaks were confirmed.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Of all cases, 3,850 -- or 7.1% -- have required hospitalization. And 889 -- or 1.6% -- of all cases and 23.1% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Meanwhile, all students at San Diego State University remained under a stay-at-home advisory announced Thursday. The advisory began at 6 p.m. Friday and will run through Nov. 2 at 6 a.m. University officials said the move was made to discourage students from participating in Halloween events where physical distancing cannot be done. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was suspected of stealing a car from a Rolando Park used auto dealership early this morning, then crashing the car when he tried to flee from police.An unknown number of accomplices stole three other cars from the same dealership, and all the accomplices remained unaccounted for Sunday afternoon, San Diego Police Officer Sarah Foster said.Two of the cars were eventually recovered, while one was still outstanding.Police were alerted to a break-in around 2 a.m. at Cash For Cars on University Avenue, Foster said. Officers spotted one of the four stolen cars leaving the parking lot and tried to pull it over.The driver fled, and police pursued him until he crashed into an embankment on College Avenue near Streamview Drive, Foster said.The suspect was arrested with the help of a police dog after he tried to hide from officers in a home near the spot where he crashed, Foster said.The man was treated for a bite wound before being booked into jail.Detectives were continuing to search for the remaining suspects. 1049
