SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 14-year-old teen has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after punching a Rabbi near a University City synagogue, police say.San Diego Police said Rabbi Yonatan Halevy, of the Shiviti Congregation, was walking near the synagogue located near 3200 Governor Drive on Oct. 10, when he was punched by the teenager. The teen reportedly yelled racial slurs during the attack and fled the location, police added. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A driver heading the wrong-way on Interstate 805 died following a fiery crash with another vehicle Saturday.A Mitsubishi Lancer traveling the wrong-way on southbound I-805 near the I-8 connector collided with a Toyota SUV just before 3 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The collision sparked a fire, engulfing both vehicles, CHP said.Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to California Highway Patrol. The wrong-way driver later died. Another vehicle received minor damages in the wreck. That driver received minor injuries.CHP was still investigating where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway. It's not clear if alcohol or drugs was a factor in the crash.A portion of I-805 was closed as crews cleared the scene, but was reopened before 7 a.m. Saturday. 855

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 29-year-old Cal Fire firefighter who died Monday after a training hike is being remembered. Yaroslav Katkov was hiking Sunday with his crew from Cal Fire / San Diego County Fire Station 16 in De Luz when he had a medical emergency, Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said. Katkov was flown to Temecula Valley Hospital in Riverside, where he died Monday morning. His cause of death was not specified. “On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our sincere condolences to CAL FIRE Firefighter Yaroslav Katkov’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. It’s the work of brave firefighters like Yaroslav that keep our communities safe, and we are deeply grateful for his service,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom and Porter ordered flags at the Capitol and Cal Fire facilities to be flown at half staff.Porter said Katkov joined Cal Fire as a seasonal firefighter in August 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A father and son heading to see the border wall became stuck in a flooded stretch of the Tijuana River Valley Thursday.Two men from Idaho and North Dakota told 10News, they were on a father-son vacation in San Diego. They said they came down to the Tijuana River Valley to see the border wall with their own eyes. But the out-of-towners did not know about the notorious dip in Saturn Boulevard.According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the men ignored road closure signs in the flooded area, and drove through the water.Their truck made it halfway across before it got stuck in five feet of water.After the water reached the truck’s window, the 75-year-old father — who was the driver — climbed out and waited on his roof for help to arrive. No injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 46-year-old Oak Park man is being held without bail in San Diego's Central Jail after San Diego Police say he kidnapped a toddler and molested her.Francisco "Freddy" Diaz faces 8 felony counts, including burglary, kidnapping sexual assault and lewd and lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14. His alleged victim is just three years old.The girl's father, Silvester Soltero told 10News he was working on his car when, unbeknownst to him, the "strange" man who lived next door broke into a bedroom window, grabbing his sleeping daughter.Soltero said Diaz' mother brought his daughter home, but she didn't have her pants. “I grabbed my daughter and I was like, baby what happened?" Soltero said his daughter proceeded to tell him the man touched her private parts.  When the father asked who the man was. Soltero said his daughter pointed out Diaz."I lost it," said Soltero.When the father approached Diaz he became hostile.  “He started screaming if you snitch on me I'll kill you," recalled Soltero.The men fought.  Soltero showed a bruise where he said Diaz tried to poke him in the eye with a fork.Eventually, Diaz ran off, but San Diego Police caught him a short distance away.That's when Soltero said things got worse.  He soon learned his neighbor was a registered sex offender.“They should have told me, they should have told me I was living next to a pedophile, If I had known I wouldn’t have brought my daughter around here, there’s no way in hell," he said.Court records show Diaz was convicted in 2006 for molesting three girls on the playground adjacent to Oak Park Elementary School, which is right across from his mother's house.  He was sentenced to eight years in prison, in part because he already had a criminal history.  In 2000, Diaz was convicted of making a terrorist threat and assault with a deadly weapon.Court records show Diaz is schizophrenic and abuses drugs, specifically methamphetamines. A psychologist is quoted in court documents saying, "If he can remain in treatment, and avoid drug and alcohol abuse, he should not pose a danger to the community's children."12 years later, Diaz finds himself back under the legal microscope.Soltero wants to know why a registered sex offender could live right across from a school full of potential victims, and right next door to the home where Soltero's daughter and three other children live.San Diego Police say Diaz was in full compliance with the terms of Megan's Law.  He is required to check in with police every year and he does so, said Lt. Jason Weeden.  Because Diaz' child molestation convictions were misdemeanors, he doesn't have to steer clear of schools and playgrounds.Silvester Soltero says if that's true, the law should be changed.  “If you’re a sex offender you shouldn’t be by a school, period," he said.Diaz will be arraigned before a judge Wednesday.  Soltero says he will be there to make sure justice is done. 3102
