(CNS) - A 71-year-old man was killed when he was run over by his own Smart Car after he unhitched it from a motorhome at a campground in the far southern reaches of San Diego County, authorities said Friday. The accident happened around 5 p.m. Thursday at Potrero County Park, northeast of Tecate, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said. The Federal Way, Washington, resident had just returned from a trip to Mexico and parked his motorhome, which was towing a late model Smart Car, at the campground, Christy said. When the man, whose name was withheld pending family notification, uncoupled the hitch between the Smart Car and the rear of the motorhome, the car began to roll backward, the officer said. ``The male had failed to ensure the emergency brake was set on the Smart Car,'' Christy said. ``The male ran to the rear of the vehicle and attempted to stop its movement, but was overcome by its momentum.'' The car ran over the victim, pinning him underneath it. Witnesses contacted emergency personnel while good Samaritans attempted to lift the car off of him, but they were unsuccessful, Christy said. Firefighters arrived and lifted the car off the victim using hydraulic jacks, then paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. 1329

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Public health authorities say the death toll from a coronavirus outbreak linked to a Maine wedding reception has grown to seven. The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday the August wedding reception at the Big Moose Inn in Millinocket is linked to more than 175 confirmed cases of the virus. The agency says the outbreak continues to sicken people around the state and is linked to other cases at a county jail and a rehabilitation center. The outbreaks stemming from the event have spanned hundreds of miles in a state that had largely controlled the spread of coronavirus through the summer. (KGTV) — Suspected Poway Synagogue shooter John Earnest did not have a valid hunting license when he purchased his gun at a San Diego dealer, meaning he was too young to buy the firearm used in the attack, a state senator said Monday. State Sen. Anthony Portantino told 10News that the Department of Justice and Fish and Wildlife confirmed to him that Earnest did not have a valid hunting license when he bought the gun from San Diego Guns on Mission Gorge Rd.On Tuesday, Fish and Wildlife confirmed Earnest's hunting license was not going to become valid until July 1, 2019 — more than two months after the attack. A valid hunting license was one exception to a law Portantino authored that set the age limit to 21 to buy a firearm. The exceptions were for military, law enforcement, and those with a state-issued valid hunting license. The bill's proponents said people under 21 are disproportionately linked to crime. Asked how Earnest did buy the gun, Portantino said it was the big question."He did not have a valid hunting license," Portantino said. "I don't think it was a fault of the law ...
