(KGTV) - Two girls were hit and injured by a pickup truck in Chula Vista Monday afternoon, officers said.The crash happened about 3:45 p.m. on East H Street at Terra Nova Drive, just east of Interstate 805. The location is near a shopping center with a Taco Bell and Jack in the Box, and Clear View Elementary School. Ambulances rushed the girls, who appeared to be teenagers, to Rady Children’s Hospital. They were both conscious, according to Chula Vista Police.The driver of the silver Toyota Tacoma who hit the girls stopped, police said. (KGTV) - A brush fire erupted near homes in the Eastlake area of Chula Vista Tuesday, but no evacuations were ordered as crews doused the flames.The fire was reported shortly after 9 a.m. near the 400 block of Agua Vista Drive, according to Cal Fire officials.The blaze briefly burned vegetation several yards from some homes, but crews in the air and on the ground were able to stop the fire’s spread before it reached structures.After nearly two hours, crews contained the fire to 44 acres burned.10News learned the fire may have been accidentally caused by landscapers using equipment to clear out weeds. 635

CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- As Chula Vista continues to grow, so does the need for police officers in the city. Last June, voters approved a half cent sales tax increase, giving Chula Vista the highest sales tax in San Diego County. The money goes into the general fund, but os designated for hiring more police and firefighters. Despite the new sales tax, some business owners say they are still having issues with the department's response times. A bakery owner on Third Avenue tells 10News she sometimes has to call police multiple times a week to report a crime, but that sometimes police don't show up or shows up hours after the crime. Captain Phil Collum says the department has hired nine of the 12 officers currently allowed by Measure A. According to SANDAG, crime in Chula Vista is actually down 3 percent in 2019, including property and violent crimes. "Sometimes the perception that crime is on the rise or perception that things feel less safe than they were, in fact all of the data suggests otherwise," said Collum. In a recent survey, 91 percent of Chula Vistans said they are "very satisfied" with the department, despite not meeting response times for priority one and priority two calls. Collum said those response times are slowly improving. The police department says additional positions will be filled through the Measure A sales tax, meaning 31 additional officers by 2023. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A frightening scene for any family to witness was captured on video just before Valentine’s Day outside an East Chula Vista gas station. A clip posted to Facebook shows a man screaming racial obscenities at a female customer while the woman he’s with calmly pumps gas into their car.The incident reportedly happened at the Shell gas station at the Village Marketplace in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista at around 4 p.m., according to the victim.In a Facebook video post, the victim wrote that the man had approached her car and began shouting vulgarities then returned to his car. “No there is nothing done prior to this on my part. No there was nothing wrong that I knew of. No, there was no history," the victim wrote in the Facebook video post."No, I've never seen this couple before. No, there were no words exchanged between us, no eye contact, he just began to spew hateful commentary when he saw me get out to pump," the victim said.Sensing that something may happen, the victim used her cellphone to record the encounter, and that's when the man approached her again.The video shows a man with face and arm tattoos jumping out of the passenger seat of a light colored Nissan Versa hatchback. He approaches the victim’s car while flashing both middle fingers and screaming, “F*** n*****s!”The man then walked up to the victim’s vehicle and spit on the windshield.10News is not identifying the victim for her own protection.According to the victim, the couple drove away after the woman finished pumping gas.“I am beyond grateful that he, for some reason, changed his mind and did not spit on me or put his hands on me,” the victim said.The woman called Chula Vista Police about five hours after the confrontation at the gas station, according to Chula Vista Police Department Captain Phil Collum. Officers took information from the woman and followed up with her Friday to gather more information and documentation, Collum said. They will evaluate the evidence to see if it amounts to a criminal offense. Collum said police do not know the identity of the man seen in the video. “This is highly unusual,” said Collum.
