SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the country's best spots to lay and in the sand and watch the tide roll in is right in San Diego.Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University more widely known as "Dr. Beach," has released his annual list of the best beaches in the U.S. Rounding out the top 10 at number nine is San Diego's own Coronado Beach for the second straight year.Tucked along Coronado, the beach is hailed by Leatherman as a local oasis and "toast of Southern California."RELATED: Coronado's Free Summer Shuttle service launches before Memorial Day"Coronado Beach is the toast of Southern California; it is a veritable oasis by the sea, measuring hundreds of yards wide. Coronado Beach was the only California beach to make the list. Topping the beach rankings is Kailua Beach Park in Oahu, Hawaii.So what makes Leatherman the expert? He uses 50 criteria to evaluate beaches, including water and sand quality as well as safety and management. It is only happening virtually. Because of that, San Diego's hospitality industry is suffering a considerable loss.The 51st Comic-Con International is called Comic-Con @Home. This means, there are no crowds, cos-players, or lines around San Diego's Gaslamp District. The good part is that all panels are free for attendees. The bad part?"We're losing 100% of the Comic-Con business," Daniel Drane, owner of The Field Irish Pub, said.For the last 22 years, Drayne has operated the establishment on 5th Avenue, a street usually packed with visitors during the pop entertainment convention. He says every year, regulars from around the world have drinks and hold meet-ups at his bar. Not this year."We're not just losing business, but there's a loss of some of the people that we've actually known for years," Drayne said.Comic-Con's COVID-shutdown does not just impact Downtown San Diego. Its effects trickle down to the rest of the city and the county.In one week, 'the Con' usually drives in 0 million to the region and fills up almost all of the county's 64,000 hotel rooms. But now those numbers are a thing of the past."Our current strategy is a strategy of survival," Robert Rauch, CEO of RAR Hospitality, said.The hotelier says San Diego County's annual average hotel occupancy is 77%. July is singlehandedly the best month of the year, at 90%. But with COVID-19 this year, it is barely at 40%."It's deplorable to go from the best month of the year, to if it weren't for the PPP loans, we'd all be losing money this month," Rauch said.With cancellations, no business, or group travel, Rauch says San Diego's lodging industry is solely surviving on stay-cationers and a handful of leisure travelers.But as the Fighting Irish say,"You can't throw in the towel. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parks and libraries in city limits of San Diego are back open as of Saturday, Oct. 3 after more than six months of closures and caution tape.To begin, 12 city libraries first opened for in-person services, then more will gradually open. The first library locations to resume in-person services include Central, Carmel Valley, Point Loma, Mission Valley, Rancho Bernardo, Malcolm X/Valencia Park, Mira Mesa, Logan Heights, San Ysidro, La Jolla, Mission Hills-Hillcrest, and College-Rolando.The libraries will open at 25% capacity starting Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The facilities will close for cleaning from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. daily and frequently touched areas will be cleaned hourly and after each usage. Voters must be registered at least 15 days before an election. If they fail to meet this requirement, they can conditionally register and vote provisionally, according to the San Diego Registrar of Voters. Voting materials, including sample ballots, are mailed starting 29 days before an election. If you changed your name, moved, or want to switch political parties, you must re-register to vote with a new application. In order to register to vote in California, you must be a U.S. citizen, a state resident, at least 18 years old before the next election, not in prison or on parole for a felony, and not declared mentally incompetent by the court.
