SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews responded Wednesday afternoon to two brush fires that scorched an area near Mission Trails Regional Park. According to firefighters, the fire broke out near Hemingway Drive and Jackson Drive around 1:40 p.m. At this time, it's unclear if any homes are being evacuated.Once crews arrived, they discovered that two spot fires were burning in the same area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers played the part of Santa Claus for one little girl who made a very big difference this summer.The lights were flashing and Christmas music was blasting through the loudspeaker as officers drove downtown toward 4-year-old Leilani's home.Leilani and her dad Lydell Short met them on the sidewalk.One officer walked up, crouched, and asked Leilani in a soft voice if she remembers them.She nodded.She and her dad met the officers last summer during a Black Lives Matter protest. Short said they heard a commotion outside and saw the line of officers near a crowd of protestors."She's always telling me she wanted to be a police officer or whatnot, so I asked them if it would be okay if she took a picture with them," he said.She high-fived and smiled with officers.A moment of kindness that left an indelible mark and brought so many people together during a tense time.Back at Leilani's home, Christmas gifts from the officers started flowing, including a barbie car, dinosaurs, a doctor doll, and most coveted, a brand new bicycle and scooter."We got a lot of stuff!!" Leilani cheered, kicking her foot into the air and smiling wide under her mask.After seeing our latest story on ABC 10News on the family, the officers got in touch with Leilani's family to coordinate the surprise."She got everything she asked for so we were very appreciative. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning commuters about an overnight closure on State Route 54 Thursday. According to the agency, crews will close the westbound SR-54 connector to northbound and southbound I-805 between 11 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday. The connector will be closed so crews can complete maintenance on guardrails.Signs will be posted directing drivers to exit at Highland Avenue, turn left to eastbound SR-54 to northbound or southbound I-805. 472

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As hundreds of Regal Cinemas in the United States face the potential for closure, other movie businesses are thriving.Cineworld, the parent company for Regal Cinemas, tweeted Sunday, saying “We can confirm we are considering the temporary closure of our U.K. and US cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached. Once a decision has been made we will update all staff and customers as soon as we can.”Conversely, a locally owned San Diego theater is thriving during this time. Douglas Yeagley owns Cinema Under the Stars, a small, outdoor Mission Hills movie theater. You can’t do live music, you can’t do anything like that, you have to be in your car or something like that to see a performance of some nature, so this particular works well because you are super safe here, open-air,” said Yeagley.He said they’ve had to change a few aspects of business, including cutting seats from 62 to 42 per showing, spacing seats out for social distancing, cleaning seats twice between each showing, and also requiring face masks when standing. Even with the changes, they sell out most nights.Yeagley said he’s been to a few indoor movies since the pandemic and noticed the lack of others inside the theater, noting that there are a few key factors keeping people away from the indoor movie setting. The indoor location is a large factor, but also the delay of the release of major pictures is keeping people away.“There’s got to be a reason to come to that movie and you have to have an interest in that movie,” he said.The announcement from Regal Cinemas comes shortly after the announcement that the release of the latest Bond film would be delayed from November of 2020 to April of 2021 and the filming of many major pictures is delayed.In San Diego County, indoor movie theaters are able to operate at either 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer. While the indoor movie industry is taking a hit right now, Yeagley said he expects it to bounce back eventually, however it will take time and could look different once it recuperates.“I think so because people like to escape and that’s what you do in a movie. You quit thinking about it, are present for two hours, focused on something. That’s enjoyable. I can’t imagine people not wanting that.” 2581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Creating a future has its hurdles, and can be especially tricky for people facing poverty or with criminal backgrounds. A San Diego organization is making sure the future is within reach. “I was on probation… I had to go to sober living to get my life right,” said Anthony Johnson. Johnson is a recent graduate of Second Chance, an organization in Encanto that helps kids and adults who have criminal backgrounds or are facing poverty get back on the right track through their programs and job training. “They changed my life," said Johnson. Covering the walls of the classrooms at Second Chance are notes illustrate the hope and want students have for a better future. “Our mission statement starts with the word disrupt. If we can break the past now, then the future has a chance to come into that person’s life,” said Robert Coleman.Coleman is the President and CEO of Second Chance and has been helping people create a future where they can provide for themselves and their families. “Isn’t it better to have people in our community who have hope and have a sense of direction and career and housing and not a journey of crime?
