SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Midwife is living her dream of opening her own birth center, helping minority women.We met Nikki Helms in July when her GoFundMe was off the charts, raising more than 1,000.She had been a licensed midwife for about a year and wanted to open a birth center. Fast forward to December and her dream is coming true."We've got signage and I stood at the foot of my stairs and cried about that," Helms said filled with gratitude. The community has continued to wrap their arms around her mission."It's really just been amazing and overwhelming, and I feel so blessed," she said wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "And so grateful and I get teared up every time I start talking about it because it gives me the opportunity to go care for families and you know it just blows my mind."Since July she's raised another ,000 and packages keep arriving on her doorstep with items for the birth center.Her mission is to support women through childbirth and beyond. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Scripps Ranch woman did a double take when she found a mailbox post knocked down, the biggest shock came two days later.Last Thursday afternoon, Elizabeth Spelce came out of her along Cypress Valley Drive and saw it: A wooden post with her mailbox and three others was lying on its side, split apart just above the concrete."Disbelief. Stood there for a good minute and stared," said Spelce.At first she thought the culprit was the wet, windy weather. Two days later, she took a closer look and realized the wood was not rotted and wasn't so sure about her wind theory. She then assumed it might have been some bad driver or teen driver, so she decided to look at her Ring doorbell video."It was a little shocking," said Spelce.In the video, a mail truck is seen pulling alongside the curb, before running right into the post and toppling the mailboxes. The postal carrier backs up the truck, pulls forward, and soon after, reaches down and delivers the mail. The truck then drives off, apparently resuming its route."There was no note. No nothing. Just a big mystery," said Spelce.Spelce says the postal carrier added to the mystery when she talked to a neighbor. "She says, 'by the way, your mailboxes are knocked over ... Gosh, I can't imagine how it happened,'" said Spelce.Remember how she continued to deliver the mail after the mailboxes were knocked over? "She was pretending she delivered the mail and then it happened ... It's very disappointing," said Spelce.Her toppled post has since been replaced by her HOA. Spelce filed a complaint with the Postal Service. She's doesn't want the mail carrier to lose her job, but hopes she'll finally take responsibility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego photographer is searching for a mystery couple seen in a Sunset Cliffs engagement photo.Elmer Rodriguez says he was out for a walk with his kids taking pictures of the sunset in late February. When he looked off to the side, he says he spotted the couple in the distance and decided to capture the special moment. “I decided it’s a good memory and they should have it,” Rodriguez said. But when Rodriguez walked over to meet the couple, he says they vanished.
