INDIANAPOLIS — In her speech Friday night at the Young Democrats of America convention, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the past ideals and current policies of the Democratic Party. She praised the party’s history on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. “We are not a monolith, and we don’t want to be,” she said. But she also touted the diversity of the current House Democratic Caucus, which she said is 60% women, people of color and LGBT.“Our diversity is our strength,” she said. Pelosi then went into more detail about the party’s current efforts in Congress, starting with the recent passage of an increase of the federal minimum wage to per hour. Both Democratic representatives from Indiana voted in favor of the proposal, but it is very unlikely to pass the Senate. She discussed what other things House Democrats are working on in Congress, such as net neutrality, gun violence prevention and climate change. Pelosi also mentioned President Donald Trump a few times. “We legislate, we investigate, and we litigate,” she said. “And we will hold the president accountable.”She ended the speech by returning to the past, quoting Thomas Paine, one of the country’s founding fathers. “The times have found us,” she recited. “Do you feel the times have found you now?”Michael Joyce, the spokesperson of the Republican National Committee, accused Pelosi of refusing to act on “anything Hoosiers want to see accomplished in Washington.”“Pelosi’s turbulent tenure as Speaker has allowed the socialist squad to takeover driving the message for the Democrats, and they’re currently driving their party off a cliff to a path of irrelevancy come 2020,” Joyce said. 1685
It’s April 15: tax day. By midnight, Americans have to file their taxes or apply for an extension. The Internal Revenue Service requires anyone who owes the government money in their taxes to pay by midnight, even if they file for an extension. With that rule in mind, a lead tax research analyst at Kansas City-based H&R Block said it’s easier to complete taxes today instead of pushing it back another six months. "If you're going to have to go to the trouble to actually figure out what you owe, you might as well file your return, get it over with," said Nathan Rigney, a research analyst. "And you may discover in fact you get a refund." He added most Americans are seeing a smaller tax return, or owe the government for the first time, but they received more take-home pay during the year. To avoid having to pay next year, Rigney suggested looking at your withholding. It's the amount of money your employer keeps from your paycheck to pay the government on your behalf. You can fill out a W4 to change your withholding. Depending on your changes, come this time next year, you may be getting a check instead of writing one. "[If you don't, the amount you owe] might even be a little bit worse just because of the way the withholding tables were implemented last year for only half of the year. This year, it will be for the full year," Rigney said. The stories of people receiving smaller refunds than past years is part of the reason some Americans haven't filed their taxes yet and will be rushing to tax preparers Monday."A lot of people come in, especially this year with the new tax law, with a little bit of anxiety, not sure how they're going to be impacted," Rigney said. "Being able to explain to people how they'll be impacted, answer their questions and put them at ease is what we do." Because you can file your taxes online, you have until midnight to submit the necessary documents to the IRS. — 1933
Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon and perhaps the wealthiest person in the world, announced on Twitter Wednesday morning that he and his wife MacKenzie will be divorcing.Bezos, who is estimated to have a net worth of 7 billion according to Fox News, tweeted the following statement in a screencap."We want to make people aware of a development in our lives. As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends. We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for ever one of the years we have been married to each other. If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again. We've had such a great life together as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, as parents, friends, partners in ventures and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures. Though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends. Jeff & MacKenzie" 1064
In response to the death of George Floyd, protests transpired in most major US cities on Friday, often becoming violent. In some cities, police took a more hands-off approach with protesters, allowing demonstrators to march and shut down streets. In other locales, protests developed into tense standoffs between demonstrators and law enforcement. Protesters were clear, “No Justice, No Peace.” Peace was hard to come by in many US cities. Atlanta:Some of the most visible damage from Friday’s protests were from Atlanta, where multiple fires were set as a number of major tourist attractions were damaged.
