NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Residents are fleeing coastal areas in Louisiana as the state braces for a possible hit from consecutive hurricanes. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says the fear is the state could see a heavy storm surge from Hurricane Marco, now in the Gulf of Mexico, and a second strike from Tropical Storm Laura before water from the first storm recedes. Laura is now lashing islands in the Caribbean and could grow into a powerful hurricane. The governor says "we've not seen this before." As the storms approached, homeowners and tourists were leaving the barrier island of Grand Isle, south of New Orleans. 625

NEW YORK -- A time of year with so much light and happiness feels a bit different this year.“Oh I thought Christmas was canceled... Are you saying it’s still on?” New York sculptor Jim Rennert said.Rennert says humor is what gets him through difficult times, like when he had a bike accident.“I broke my collarbone, separated my shoulder, took me 45 minutes to get up," Rennert said. "I was chuckling on the ground about it; that’s how I deal with stress.”He hopes to bring that humor to others this holiday season through his work.“Bringing a little bit of light, a little bit of levity, having something that people can smile about, even if it’s for a moment as they’re walking down the street and they see one of my sculptures goes a long way right now,' Rennert said. The weekend before Christmas, quite a few of Rennert’s sculptures were installed across New York City.“You can’t go to museums, you can’t go to art galleries freely like you could before – they’re limited on their hours and their attendance – so why not put the work out and allow people to enjoy it on the street,” Rennert said. Each sculpture resonates with people in the business world. He was part of that world as a stockbroker before he found his calling as an artist at the age of 34.“I just went back to what I had been thinking about all those experiences in business that were challenging, and I found out there was an audience for that. I don’t know that anybody had ever done that before," Rennert said. His audience has grown this year as the world has been struggling with a whole new set of challenges. He feels inspired to honor essential workers and connect with people through the mutual feeling of isolation.“One is a guy in a bird cage called "Caged but not Conquered," so I got a figure as if he’s a bird in this cage just waiting to get out,” Rennert said.Rennert says we have to hold onto hope and know that things will get better. He says art in a time of so much despair is one way to bring light to the darkness.“It might make them forget about what’s going on which would be kind of nice for a minute, ya know?”Rennert said. 2128

New research released today from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that vehicular crashes have increased in states where recreational marijuana is legal. The nonprofit organization took crash data from four states where recreational pot is legal: Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Colorado. The findings revealed crashes were up as much as 6 percent, when compared with adjacent states that don't have legalized marijuana. Now, the research doesn't prove marijuana is directly responsible for the increase, but it does show a correlation.  The organization’s president says we should all take these numbers as an early warning sign.“The real key is not so much the magnitude of the number as it is the direction we're seeing,” says David Harkey, president at Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. “And that we think this is a really good early indicator of the potential issues associated with this policy change of recreational use of marijuana.”There are still a lot of unknowns regarding marijuana in terms of how it affects the human body. For example, when someone is drunk, you can measure their blood alcohol content with a breathalyzer. However, there is no equivalent real-time test for measuring THC, the psychoactive component in marijuana. 1279

North Korea has threatened to abandon planned talks between leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in June if Washington insists on pushing it "into a corner" on nuclear disarmament.A statement published by the state-run Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said North Korea would never accept economic assistance from the US in exchange for unilaterally abandoning its nuclear program.Kim Kye Gwan, North Korea's First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was quoted in the article as saying "the US is talking about giving us economic rewards and benefits when we give up nuclear weapons.""We have never built our economy expecting things from the US and will never do such a deal in the future," he added. If the Trump administration was "genuinely committed" to improving ties with Pyongyang, "they will receive a deserving response," Kim said. "But if they try to push us into a corner and force only unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in that kind of talks and will have to reconsider ... the upcoming summit."  1077

NILES, IL — Most would agree 2020 has been a tough year. For one custom toymaker, though, it has been fueling his niche business. Part Santa’s elf, part satirist and a kid at heart, Dan Polydoris' home in Niles, Illinois is a shrine to toys. But for the avid toy collector, it wasn’t enough to just collect. A decade ago, he decided to create.“Most of the time, for figures, I start with some kind of existing figure,” he explained. “I have parts upon parts.”Death by Toys was born out of that need. But his re-purposed action figures and throwback novelties aren’t just toys, they’re often imbued with scathing social commentary.“I like a good jab at a fragile male ego as much as I love just a forklift driver who looks sexy or something like that,” said Polydoris.Everything is painstakingly made by hand. Nothing is mass-produced, which means everything is made in small batches or even as one-of-a-kind creations.Items like the limited edition "Karen" figure sell for 5. A package of air is sold as "100% Genuine Thoughts & Prayers."Last month after a fly landed on Mike Pence’s head during the vice-presidential debate, Polydoris offered up 50 "Mike Pence Head Fly" toys. They sold out almost immediately.“We're just all the worst. And we all were like, 'That fly is the hero we needed.’”In 2016, horror filmmaker Eli Roth gifted one of Polydoris’ Maniac-inspired bloody scalps to writer Stephen King. His toy-making handiwork has even been featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.“I will say the generally positive response to the garbage that I make has been surprising and has been a pleasure and a nice little treat," the toy maker said. But Polydoris says it’s not the mass appeal he’s interested in and he knows his edgy brand of "art" may not be for everyone.“The truth is anything that has a point of view will have someone that doesn't like that,” he said. “So, that's just the deal.”Still, in a year like 2020 where his bestselling items include the coronavirus and a garbage fire, Polydoris says his custom collectibles may just be the brand of humor we all need right now.“Someone who might have at the beginning of the year been like, ‘No thank you,’ but now, after a year of living alone and growing a beard down to here, you know we're all kind of pushed to the edge a little bit. So, I think that that kind of stuff speaks to all of us right now.” 2392
