SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A sailor who was rescued at sea off San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente was taken to San Diego by the Coast Guard Monday.The man called Joint Harbor Operations in San Diego about 11:20 a.m. to report his 18-foot boat was taking on water 12 miles offshore.“I tried a couple of things to fix the problem and couldn’t figure out where the water was coming in from,” Gillest said.He was able to radio the Coast Guard for help, who sent a helicopter crew to rescue him.“I was in contact with the pilot. He said if the stern starts going underwater, its time to get away from the boat,” Gillest said.  “The uncertainty was when I was getting out to me, watching it fill with water, I was like who’s going to get out here? Am I going to be in the water before anyone gets here?”By around 12:45 p.m., the boat began to sink and Gillest was forced to jump into the water. Gillest, who is retired military and a strong swimmer, says he was in the water for about 10 minutes.The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer and basket into the water, who was able to reach Gillest, put him into the basket, and hoist him up into the chopper. “Not really scared because I know the coast guard guys and they’re awesome,” Gillest said, “Everything went textbook.” 1282

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new report from California State University, San Marcos, shows San Diego County's craft beer industry continued its uphill climb last year.In 2018, San Diego County saw its craft brewing family grow to a total of 155 independent craft brewers, bringing the region to a total of 202 operating brewery locations, the report revealed. The study was compiled by CSUSM, the school's Office of Business Research and Analysis, and San Diego Brewers Guild.Data did show that brewery openings slowed starting in 2017, but have rose slightly since.The majority of breweries are packed into Central San Diego, hosting 55% of craft breweries in the county, the report says. North County holds the second largest piece, with 32.5% of breweries, following by East County with 8.1%, and the South Bay with 4.4%.RELATED: First-of-its-kind craft beverage project planned for EscondidoYear-over-year, craft beer's economic impact to San Diego grew 6% in 2018 to an estimated .2 billion. Since 2016, the region has seen a 34% rise in economic impact from the craft beer industry.In another measurement of craft beer's outlook in San Diego, the report's craft beer confidence index stood at 91, which the report says indicates a strong outlook over the next year. The index surveys how respondents feel about barrelage production, distribution, employment, and capital expenditures.The report, adding that San Diego will soon see its own Museum of Beer in 2020, highlights the region's outlook for craft beer, breweries, and the industry's impact.When it comes to the style of beer drinkers prefer most, nationwide IPAs took 25.2% of the market, followed by belgain white (20.6%), other styles (14.5%), seasonal (13.6%), and lagers (11.1%). SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A local marijuana testing lab is releasing vape test results that are alarming. Almost 80% of the cannabis vape cartridges were tested and deemed "unfit for consumption."Tucked away in a quiet San Diego business park, Platinum Vape manufacturing company produces high-potency, pesticide-free cannabis products that go through rigorous testing. Co-founder George Sadler is on a mission to spread awareness about the serious potential health risks of using products from unlicensed vape makers and sellers."It's horrible," he tells 10News, adding, "It's doing so much harm to people, versus walking into a licensed store."Platinum Vape recently teamed up with nearby licensed cannabis dispensary Mankind to buy back cartridges that ranged from home-made concentrates to counterfeits of popular legal brands.In exchange, customers got discounted Platinum Vape cartridges that are tested and regulated.Mankind Chief Operating Officer Vera Levitt tells 10News, "We wanted to encourage them to replace something that could make them sick with something that was safe."The cartridges were sent to Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, or InfiniteCAL. It's a local cannabis testing lab that then analyzed the cartridges for potency, pesticides, and heavy metals.The lab found that 79% of the cartridges were deemed "unfit for consumption". Additionally, 62% of them failed for pesticides. Almost 40% of the cartridges failed for lead."[Were there] toxic levels of lead?" 10News asks InfiniteCAL co-founder David Marelius. "One of the vape pens had almost a hundred times the legal limit," he explains.The lab also discovered that half of the products had less than 50% THC in them. Some of the cartridges were cut with excessive levels of vitamin E acetate; the additive may be linked to numerous vape-related deaths and illnesses. Marelius adds, "20% of them had a significant amount.""It's sad for me. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken mother is making a plea for tips after a burglar makes off with a computer with with "priceless memories."An upset Sheila Conway shared her story with 10News, weeks after she returned to her home on Norwich Street to a break-in. It appears the burglar opened an unlocked outer door, before somehow opening another door. Taken were Conway's purse and her silver HP laptop. Inside that computer: A lifetime of memories of her only child, her son Tyler Peckham. Tyler, diagnosed with schizophrenia, took his own life in 2014 at the age of 26. Just off the kitchen is a wall memorial dedicated to Tyler, filled with photos showing Tyler growing up into adulthood. Conway says the computer contained hundreds of photos, most of them not backed up. “Cried a lot and just furious. It wasn’t a laptop, but memories that were stolen … everything from baby pictures to adult photos that I’ll never see again,” said Conway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heat wave expected to bring record high temperatures to San Diego County this weekend will also bring a double whammy of wildfire danger and energy concerns to the area."We ramp up. We get ready," said Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser. "We'll have extra engines in place and extra personnel on duty."Cal Fire is already stretched thin, as they continue to help with wildfire efforts across the state. Already in 2020 there have been around 7,400 fires with 1.8 million acres burned so far.Last year at the same time, California had only seen 4,500 fires, burning 63,000 acres.Bortisser said prolonged drought created excess fuel."We're starting to see fires get into those areas where dead trees are, and we're seeing these huge fires burning throughout the state,” Bortisser said.There haven't been any major fires in San Diego County this year. Bortisser said people in San Diego can help lower the fire risk this weekend by putting off any activities that could create sparks."We want you do the right thing, but we want you do the right thing at the right time," said Bortisser. "This weekend is not the time to be out there with the power tools trying to clear weeds, chainsaws and things like that."Bortisser added that there is still some time Friday to clear defensible space around your home, so firefighters can protect it if a wildfire starts.Meanwhile, San Diego Gas & Electric is preparing for the surge of energy demand that comes with high temperatures.The California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO), which manages the state's electric grid, issued a Flex Alert for the weekend. They're telling people to avoid heavy energy usage between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. from Friday through Monday.SDG&E officials say that means San Diegans should not run major appliances like dishwashers or laundry machines during those hours. They also suggest setting air conditioners to 78 degrees to conserve energy."We are staying in very close touch with CAISO," said SDG&E spokesperson Helen Gao. "We're monitoring the weather and grid conditions, so we are ready to respond."At CAISO's command, SDG&E did temporary blackouts for some customers in August during the last heat wave. It was the first time in 20 years that CAISO implemented statewide rolling blackouts.If that needs to happen again this weekend, SDG&E says they'll spread the blackouts across the county so no one area is affected more than another."We'll go by group," said Gao.
