BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The State Grid Corp. of China (SGCC), the country's biggest power supplier, said Sunday that its 2008 net profit fell almost 80 percent year on year due to natural disasters and higher power prices.     Net profit was 9.66 billion yuan (1.4 billion U.S. dollars), compared with 47.1 billion yuan in 2007.     Revenue rose 13.8 percent to 1.156 trillion yuan from a year earlier, the state-owned company noted.     The power distributor suffered more than 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) of direct economic loss in the worst winter weather in at least 50 years in southern China and the May 12 earthquake.     China raised the on-grid power price by 0.017 yuan per kwh in June and 0.02 yuan kwh in August to around 0.3 yuan per kwh on average to offset rising costs in power plants. But retail household power prices were capped amid concerns of a higher inflation.     The company said it planned to invest 83 billion yuan (12 billion U.S. dollars) in ultra-high voltage (UHV) power lines in 2009 and 2010 to make long-distance transmission more efficient.     China's power demand and installed power generating capacity would likely double to 7.4 trillion kwh and 1.47 billion kw respectively in 2020, it forecasted.

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's senior political advisors convened here on Wednesday to discuss the new Party decision on rural reform and advice on the issue.     During the four-day third meeting of the Standing Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, political advisors were expected to carefully review the decision made at the third Plenary Session of the 17th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee that closed on Sunday, said Jia Qinglin, the CPPCC National Committee chairman who presided over the meeting.     The CPPCC had made great efforts to study the issues of agriculture, rural development and improving farmers' life, he said. "We hope political advisors can present their findings, put forward proposals and contribute to the rural reform and development." BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Leaders from the Communist Party of China(CPC) and the Prosperous Armenia of Armenia pledged to promote contacts based on principles of independence, equality and non-interference in each other's internal affairs on Monday.     Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and Gagik Tsarukyan, president of the Prosperous Armenia agreed to learn from each other to cement the relations between the two countries during a meeting at the Great Hall of the People.     Li said Sino-Armenia relations had developed smoothly and cooperation in the fields of trade, education, science and agriculture had been fruitful since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1992.     He expressed appreciation of Armenia's adherence to the one-China policy, saying China valued ties with Armenia and would upgrade the bilateral ties to benefit the two peoples.     Tsarukyan echoed that his party would strengthen cooperation with the CPC to further relations between Armenia and China.     Prosperous Armenia of Armenia was founded by Tsarukyan in late 2005, and now is the second largest political party in parliament.     Tsarukyan and his party are visiting China at the invitation of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee.

BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Railway stations across China expect to handle a record of 188 million passengers heading home to family for the Lunar New Year holidays. That's up 8 percent year-on-year, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said here on Thursda y.     "With 150 more trains in operation, trains can carry 4.48 million travelers every day, up 180,000 compared with the same period of 2008," MOR spokesman Wang Yongping told Xinhua.     The 40-day travel period, built around the Spring Festival, lasts from Jan. 11 to Feb. 19.     Wang said railways across the country will face a great amount of pressure as the Lunar New Year, which usually arrives in February, falls on Jan. 26.     "Students and employees nationwide are heading for home for an early holiday, while migrant workers are also returning home earlier this year as many manufacturers they work for have cut or ceased production amid weak market demand," said Wang.     "When most people will be moving around at the same time, an earlier-than-usual travel rush is around corner."     Transport safety is MOR's top concern. Railway departments nationwide are examining maintenance and transport facilities to ensure a smooth operation, according to the ministry.     At the same time, MOR released an emergency mechanism on Monday in preparation for possible severe weather such as snow storms and fog.     Hundreds of thousands of passengers were stranded at railway stations in southern China before this year's Spring Festival as blizzards paralyzed transportation.

ATHENS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao flew into Athens Monday for a state visit to Greece, which he said would be successful with the joint efforts by the Chinese side and the Greek side.     "In recent years, the China-Greece comprehensive strategic partnership has been consolidated continuously with increased exchanges and expanded cooperation in all sectors," said President Hu in a written speech issued upon his arrival at the airport.     He said that China attaches great importance to the development of its relations with Greece and will work together with the Greek side for the even better ties in the future. In 2007, the bilateral two-way trade was recorded at 3.4 billion U.S. dollars, and in the first seven months of this year it reached 2.4 billion dollars.     In June this year, Greek President Karolos Papoulias visited China and had talks with President Hu.
