SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to extend an agreement with Southern California Edison to receive emergency planning funds from the utility as it removes spent nuclear fuel from the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station.The county's Office of Emergency Services entered a similar memorandum of understanding with SCE in 2015, through which the company provided radiological emergency planning funds to five jurisdictions around the plant, including San Diego County, through the end of Fiscal Year 2019-20.A county staff report estimates SCE will pay the county 6,500 in the remainder of the agreement.The remainder of the spent fuel is planned to be moved from spent fuel pools to dry cask storage by the end of this summer, but the memorandum approved by the board runs through the end of Fiscal Year 2049 or whenever all spent fuel is removed from the site -- whichever comes first.The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the State of California do not require decommissioned nuclear power plants to reimburse local jurisdictions for emergency planning, but SCE has agreed to continue paying jurisdictions surrounding the plant, for planning and preparation for radiological emergencies.San Onofre hasn't produced power since a steam leak in 2012, and SCE closed the plant the following year and began decommissioning activities.When the California Coastal Commission voted 9-0 last October to allow SCE to begin dismantling the plant, the canisters were being moved from a "wet storage" facility to a newly constructed "dry storage" facility on the site. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved spending million in federal pandemic-related funding to help child care providers, testing in schools and meals for senior citizens.The board directed million to child care providers, who have been struggling to stay afloat since March, in the form of grants.The county will also spend .8 million on senior food programs -- including an expanded Great Plates program that involves prepared meals delivered to the elderly -- while also supporting participating restaurants.The board voted to spend million to support the county Department of Public Health's testing, tracing and treatment strategy dedicated for kindergarten through 12th-grade schools.Last month, the board directed the county's chief administrative officer to make recommendations on how to spend the money.To implement the child care grants, CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer will negotiate agreements with The San Diego Foundation, the YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates, Inc.Supervisor Jim Desmond said while he has been critical of Great Plates program, based on the costs per meal, he understands it helps restaurants while also helping shut-in seniors who may not have any social interaction otherwise.Desmond added that if there's money left over from the program or school testing, it should go towards area food banks.In related actions following an update on county COVID-19 prevention efforts, the board approved Desmond's motion for a waiver to the school- closures mandate.The board also approved a separate motion allowing county enforcement of businesses -- in terms of complying with reopening requirements -- based on Phase 2 mandates. 1741

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Friday identified a 44-year-old man who was found fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Encanto area of San Diego.The man was identified as Gilbert Lee Johnson, of San Diego, the San Diego Police Department reported.Officers found Johnson about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Varney and Theodore drives, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.After police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the area, officers reported finding him slumped over in the vehicle suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs."It appears the victim was in the area talking to an acquaintance when another vehicle pulled up near the victim. The suspect got out of his vehicle and fired several rounds at the victim," Dobbs said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego-based medical equipment manufacturer ResMed Corp. has agreed to pay more than .5 million to resolve allegations that it paid kickbacks to suppliers, sleeps labs and other health care providers in exchange for referrals and prescriptions for its products, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday.The government accused ResMed of violating the Anti-Kickback Statute of the False Claims Act by providing free or below-cost medical equipment to companies in several states.
