World leaders in obesity research are optimistic about new guidelines out of Canada, which take a more holistic approach to diagnosing and treating obesity.One critical point is for doctors to stop relying on a person's body mass index alone for diagnosis.“Body mass index tells me how big you are. It doesn't tell me how sick you are,” said Dr. Arya Sharma, Scientific Director of Obesity Canada. “So, you can have two people with the exact same BMI numbers, two people, they are both 35, one person has sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver disease, infertility whatever, and the next person with that body mass index has none of those problems.”Sharma says under these new guidelines, they are concerned that more people could be classified as obese. A person might fall under the BMI number for obesity but still have weight-related health issues.Currently, about 30% of Canadians are obese. In the United States, it’s about 42%.The head of the U.S. National Center for Weight and Wellness applauds the new approach.“That very well may be lead to a seminal shift in how the general medical population addresses obesity and for that, I think they really deserve a lot of credit,” said Dr. Scott Kahan, Director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness.Another critical issue the new guidelines address is weight bias among health professionals and people living with obesity.“Patients also tend to blame themselves, so they have an internalized weight bias, so the patients also think, ‘so this is my fault and I’ve done this to myself,’” said Sharma.Doctors say your body fights back against weight loss biologically, which is why Sharma says obesity is a chronic disease for which there is no cure but can be managed. And today, there are more proven treatments than ever, not diets.“The only reason why medication and surgery have much better long-term results is because they actually change the biology in the sense to make it much harder for the body to defend its weight,” said Sharma.Obesity is a complex disease that can be caused by genetics, psychological or environmental factors among others. 2133

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK – A hiker died after falling from Half Dome at Yosemite National Park Monday, according to KABC.The hiker fell from the Half Done cables while hiking with another person during a thunderstorm around 4:30 p.m. Monday.The National Park Service says the death is the first fatality at that particular spot since 2010. It’s also the first time a visitor died this year.The identity of the hiker hasn’t been released and no further details are being made available at this time. 514

With the surge in people buying above ground and inflatable pools, coupled with the fact that kids are spending nearly all their time at home now, the risk of drowning is up significantly.It’s the leading cause of death among young children.“A lot of that has to do with just the nature of those toddlers. They are impulsive. They are quick. They're just built to explore and they're not great at following rules or understanding limits. And for them water is a fascinating thing and if they can find it, they will, and they're going to try and get in it,” said Dr. Ben Hoffman, pediatrician with AAP Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention.Hoffman says a locking fence around the entire pool can cut the risk of drowning by half. If you don’t have a fence for inflatable pools, emptying them out is best. For above ground, he suggests removing the ladder.Swim lessons also can decrease the risk of drowning. But nothing replaces the constant, within arm’s length, non-distracted adult supervision.“You have to have somebody designated as a water watcher,” said Sophia Brizeus, whose daughter drowned in pool. “Make sure they are watching the kids in the water because like I said, this can happen to anybody and it only takes a second, it only takes a second.”Brizeus started the Love Bug Foundation in memory of her daughter Soraya, who was almost 2 years old when she drowned while they were visiting with family one Sunday afternoon. The toddler just slipped away and into the pool, even with adults around.Soraya was even supposed to start swim lessons a week later.Brizeus is now educating other parents about water safety through Facebook and Instagram accounts.“What I’ve learned about the drownings is it’s not like the movies at all. It happens quick. It’s silent and a child can be with a room full of people and it still happens,” said Brizeus. 1874

This is a perfect example where the police could have stayed back, stayed in line, said nothing, which they're trained to do. They're trained to de-escalate. Not escalate," Johnson said.Witnesses claim protests were peaceful, outside of a few fireworks which were not aimed at police."Some people were lighting fireworks, that were just going straight up, because we have a point to make," witness James Curley said. "Black Lives Matter. Police brutality needs to stop."Curley said the video was recorded by his friend Dakota Spoelman. The two do not know the man shown in the video."(He) walked up to the line of police, to express his freedom of speech," Curley said. "The cop stepped up to him and pepper-sprayed him. Completely no threat after that. Don't know what's going on. They shot him; it looked like they shot him, from the chest to the head with some type of flash grenade."Curley says the police's action is the exact reason he's protesting."After that, that's when things started escalating," Curley said.
