SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The White House confirmed Tuesday that it is reviewing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.It comes as the Department of Homeland Security announced changes to the program that gives protection to some undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, guarding them against deportation.In a news release, DHS announced the following changes to the DACA program:Reject all initial requests for DACA and associated applications for Employment Authorization Documents;Reject new and pending requests for advanced parole absent exceptional circumstances; and,Limit the period of renewed deferred action granted pursuant to the DACA policy after the issuance of this memorandum to one year.Last month, the Supreme Court blocked an attempt by the Trump Administration to end DACA altogether.DACA supporters are expected to go to court to stop the changes announced Tuesday. 925

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego region needs to develop new housing units at a pace not seen since before the housing bubble burst to meet the demand.A new report from the San Diego Association of Governments says the region needs to add about 171,000 new houses, condos and apartments by 2029, based on a state projection of population growth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Padres took a dozen teens undergoing cancer treatment to Spring Training this week.After spending months in and out of Rady Children’s Hospital, the teens say they were excited to get to experience what it feels like to be a normal kid again. “I have osteosarcoma, it's a bone cancer, it was in my leg, and I recently got it is surgically removed,” says patient Nicholas Herrmann. But today, lab tests and screenings are the last things on his mind. “It sounds so fun. We get to go out with a great group of guys and a great group of girls here.”RELATED: San Diego Padres sell out Opening Day game with Manny MachadoThe teens signed their honorary contracts with the Padres and grabbed their jerseys before heading to Peoria, Arizona. For three days, they will get to meet players, attend batting practice and a game versus the Cincinnati Reds. This is the first year for the program. Parents say this trip is an excellent way for the teens to gain independence and form friendships with others. “It's so hard for them. My son is not in school, a lot of other kids aren’t in school either, so they’re not having that social interaction all the time,” says Nichole Elliott- Herrmann. “For us just to see them have fun and have a smile on their face, and not having to go into the hospital is amazing.”Parents will be staying behind for this trip. A group of caregivers, including doctors and nurses, accompanied the teens to make sure they are in good health. 1500

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The statistics for foster kids aging out of the system are grim. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, after reaching the age of 18, 20 percent of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. And there's a less than a 3 percent chance for children who have aged out of foster care to earn a college degree at any point in their life.San Diego nonprofit Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) is doing its part to prevent young people here from becoming a statistic. "When you turn 18 a lot of times the foster parents say here is a few dollars and you're on your own, there's no one to help you out," said Ivan Chavez, who was in the foster system from age 7 to 17.Growing up, he didn't have many positive role models. "For me, I never went to high school, and I barely went to middle school."But his journey brought him to JIT, where he now works as a full-time employee. JIT's My First Home (MFH) program helps former foster youth furnish and move into their new living space, creating a foundation for stable housing.Once every month, youth participants involved in the program have the chance to shop at the MFH Distribution Center, providing participants housing essentials for free, such as furniture, electronics, linens, and appliances. "They come in through the front door they're like you have all this stuff, and it's for me? They feel special, you know?" said Chavez.Chavez went from once living on the streets to now pursuing a master's degree. "If I saw my 15-year-old self, I would say everything is going to be ok. You're going to grow up, and you're going to do good and hopefully change people's lives," said Chavez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of SDG&E customers were left in the dark in Central San Diego, as an power outage hit late Wednesday.The outage affected about 5,800 customers in the Sorrento Valley, Mira Mesa, and Scripps Ranch areas just after 5 p.m., according to SDG&E's outage map. Those still without power dropped to about 1,900 customers by about 6 p.m.It's unclear what caused the outage. Crews were assessing the issue and estimated power would be restored by 8 p.m. up to 9:30 p.m. in some areas.Other outages were also reported in the Oceanside and Poway areas around the same time as well. SDG&E estimates power to be retored to those areas around 8 p.m. as well.10News is monitoring this breaking news. 728
