(AP) — California lawmakers on Thursday approved a 4.8 billion state budget that would spend more on health care and education, bolster the state's top firefighting agency following devastating wildfire seasons, and boost state reserves.The spending plan was passed with separate votes by the state Assembly and Senate. He noted he legally immigrated to the U.S. from the Netherlands in 1960.The budget proposal includes increases in public education, which would bring state spending to ,018 for every student in K-12 public schools. It would give grants of up to ,000 to students studying to be teachers if they promise to teach subjects impacted by the teacher shortage, including science, technology, math and engineering.Democratic Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi of Torrance said the state should invest even more in public schools, though he voted to pass the spending plan."Let's not be fooled by the dollar amount. We are just allocating the minimum," he said. "That is not bold, Mr. Governor."Following the state's deadliest wildfire season in history, the plan includes .3 million for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to buy 13 new fire engines and hire 131 people to operate them.It also includes .1 million to accept seven used C-130 air tankers from the federal government. Gavin Newsom has signed a law intended to counter Trump administration plans to increase oil and gas production on protected public land.The measure bars any California leasing authority from allowing pipelines or other oil and gas infrastructure to be built on state property. It makes it difficult for drilling to occur since federally protected areas are adjacent to state owned land.It's one of several new laws enacted by the governor on Saturday.Newsom also signed a law which renames the California agency that regulates the oil and gas industry. (AP) — Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California has temporarily banned overnight camping in some parts of its park after several interactions between campers and foraging bears. The decision was made to close down back-country camping in the Twin, Rainbow, Swan and Snag Lake areas after multiple visitors reported that bears had come to their campsites and searched their backpacks for food. The Sacramento Bee reported that the areas will remain open for hiking, but the park warns visitors to be careful. The National Park Service website said the policy will not only protect campers but “protect the bears by promoting the offending bear(s) to return to normal foraging behavior.” 724

Riding in vehicles after the pandemic could look different for a while. Ridesharing company Lyft will be distributing partitions to drivers as they make changes to address the COVID-19 pandemic and CDC guidelines.In a blog post Friday, Lyft said they are establishing new health and safety standards, including riders and drivers certifying they are symptom-free, wearing masks throughout the ride, and vehicle partitions.Partitions have been available to identified frequent Lyft drivers and those in the company’s Express Drive rental program in Atlanta, Denver and Baltimore. They will be coming to other large cities next before being rolled out to 60,000 drivers in the coming months. Some drivers will receive partitions for free, others will be able to purchase one from Lyft.
