PETERSBURG, Fla. — Justin Beauchesne will never forget the first time he rode a skateboard.“It felt like freedom,” the triple amputee said. “Man, it was awesome, so much better than I ever expected,” he said.When Beauchesne was just 18 months old, he lost both arms and part of a leg to meningitis.“For so long, doctors and nurses and teachers were telling me I can’t do things,” he said.But Beauchesne has always been a fighter, an athlete who craved challenges.When he was 12, he played Tony Hawk’s skateboarding video game. It wasn’t too long before he was trying out a real skateboard.“My mom wasn’t happy,” he said. “But being able to get on a piece of wood, and just feel that freedom, was euphoric.”Now 31, Beauchesne will make an appearance at this weekend’s X Games.But skateboarding is really just a way for Beauchesne to achieve his true passion: helping others.His nonprofit Amp-Ventures gets amputees active in such sports as surfing and paddleboarding.“When I was six, I remember telling my aunt that I wanted to help people,” Beauchesne said. “And now that I’m older, I don’t want to stop.”This story was originally published by Sean Daly on 1173

TAMPA, Fla. — A man arrested on Friday is accused of shooting and killing a Florida couple on Halloween, just days after they welcomed a new baby. Tampa police say Tyrail Kendrick, 26, is facing two first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Stanley Peck and Tia Pittman. Police responded to the 1700 block of West Walnut Street shortly after 7 a.m. on Oct. 31 after receiving a report of shots heard in the area.After arriving, they found Peck and Pittman suffering from gunshot wounds. Peck was pronounced dead at the scene and Pittman was taken to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. 616

Spades, dominoes, family and the Buffalo Bills. That's been the game plan every Sunday at Wilbert Covington's house. But this season has been different. Covington became sick in June. Just last week he found out that cancer has spread from his lungs through his entire body. He's asked his family for one final wish: to congratulate the Bills on their season. "He called us over because he said he reached his gates, and he wanted us to come over, so we came over," said Tiecha Hill, Covington's granddaughter, "He had his phone and was trying to open it but he couldn't. My aunt took the phone and she opened it and said 'Who are you trying to call?' and he said, 'the Bills.'"His granddaughter took to Facebook, sharing that story. She hoped it would help his dream come true. That's when Bills players Eddie Yarbough and Dion Dawkins stepped up with a FaceTime call on Thursday. "Once we heard that message about Wilbert we just said heck yeah. If he just wants to talk to us, absolutely. Lets do that immediately," said Dawkins. "For Wilbert to reach out to us, and ask us for a moment of our time, that's nothing for family," Yarbrough said. They both agreed - their gesture is exactly what you do for family. "The thing about Buffalonians is it's all for one, one for all. So when one of us is hurt, we're all hurt. When one of us has success, we all have success. So with Wilbert, he's hurting.
