Growing mental health issues among college students were already a concern. Now, schools are preparing for what comes next in the fall, because of both the pandemic and also the renewed attention on racism in our country.About 24% of college students were diagnosed with or treated for anxiety problems last year, according to a study by the American College Health Association. That's up from about 10% a decade earlier. It's a similar trend among the number of students diagnosed with or treated for depression.“We're expecting those statistics to really skyrocket in terms of students just feeling a lot of fear, a lot of uncertainty, a lot of anxiety, a lot of despair with what has been going on and what things look like perhaps for them,” said Dr. Joy Himmel, an American College Health Association fellow.Himmel is a member of the COVID-19 task force for the American College Health Association. She says schools have already shifted to doing more remote telehealth sessions for mental health. But it has been a challenge in some places because of licensing across state lines.A lot of states have done waivers to allow this. Himmel is concerned about when states of emergency are lifted, and these waivers won't be there anymore. She says it will also be important to focus particularly on freshmen.“One of the things that I think builds camaraderie, builds enthusiasm and energy for students is that bonding with fellow students,” said Himmel. “We're very social in terms of our humanness and we need each other and so it's very important to really look at physical distancing, not social distancing and create social caveats for students to connect.”Counseling staff at Howard University tell the Wall Street Journal they're planning an online program for first year students to address this issue of a freshman year without the typical experiences.Counseling staff members at Tulsa Community College say they're doing trauma training now to be prepared to help students.At Pace University, they've been doing online mental wellness workshops for students. 2075

FROSTPROOF, Fla. — The triple murder of three close friends is under investigation in Florida.The Polk County Sheriff's Office says around 10:06 p.m. on Friday, one victim, 27-year-old Rollins, called his dad for help. Officials say his dad knew Brandon had gone fishing with two of his friends, 30-year-old Keven Springfield and 23-year-old Damion Tillman, who were also victims. All were from Frostproof.Brandon's dad drove to the unincorporated area of Frostproof and when he arrived, he found his son barely alive, officials say. The other two friends were found dead.Brandon's dad drove to a close-by gas station to call 911.When first responders arrived, all three victims were found dead. Officials said they appeared to have been beaten and shot."This is a horrific scene. I've been to a lot of murder scenes in my life and this ranks among the worst I've been to," said Sheriff Grady Judd.According to families, the three men were best friends and knew each other for years. They said the three men were fishing on land, not in a boat."We are seeking leads. We need help so we can solve this crime sooner rather than later because there are one or more, we suspected more, murderers, that killed three people in a quiet community," said Sheriff Judd.The sheriff's office is asking for the public's help on any information on the incident. GRASS VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV and AP) — The body of a woman found in a shallow Northern California grave may be an aspiring model and actress from Macedonia who vanished in Los Angeles last month, authorities said.The Nevada County Sheriff's Office said the body found Tuesday has not been identified. Los Angeles Police said they believe the remains are those of 25-year-old Adea Shabani, KABC reported. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.Sheriff's Lt. Rob Bringolf said Los Angeles police detectives searching for Shabani led investigators to the grave 56 miles (90 kilometers) north of Sacramento. Shabani was last seen in Hollywood on Feb. 23.An acquaintance of Shabani's fatally shot himself in the head last week. The California Highway Patrol said 33-year-old Chris Spotz led officers on a Southern California vehicle pursuit that ended with his death in Riverside County. HONOLULU (AP) — About 8,000 people landed in Hawaii on the first day of a pre-travel testing program that allowed travelers to come to the islands without quarantining for two weeks if they could produce a negative coronavirus test. The pre-travel testing program began Thursday and allows visitors who test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of their arrival in the islands to avoid quarantine — a measure that’s been in place for all arriving passengers for most of the year.The state-run testing program is an effort to stem the devastating downturn the pandemic has had on Hawaii’s tourism-based economy. However, gaps in the program coupled with increasing cases of COVID-19 across the U.S. and the world have raised questions about whether Hawaii is ready to safely welcome back vacationers.Opponents of the testing program have said a single test 72 hours before arrival — especially when coupled with the option to fly without a test and still quarantine — is not enough to keep island residents safe.Hawaii’s economy is almost entirely built around tourism and local families who rely on the sector to survive need to return to work. 1153
