CORONADO, Calif., (KGTV)— Coronado residents are split on whether a fenced-in, off-leash dog park would be a welcome addition, next to a childcare facility and the Coronado School District building. The district office is located on 6th Street, just east of Naval Air Station North Island. Coronado’s famous dog beach is where dogs can be dogs: run freely on the sand, splash around, and play with their humans. But soon, something similar could be coming about a mile north on the island. Last week, the Coronado Unified School District and the City of Coronado announced that they are negotiating changes to their Facilities Joint Use Agreement. A portion of the 3/4 acre grassy area, between the district office and the childcare facility on 6th Street could be converted into a fenced-in dog park.“I think a lot of the homeowners and parents were blindsided by this,” Emily Foster said. Foster lives across the street.  The mother of three small children believes having a portion of the grass become a dog park would be unsanitary.“We’re concerned about run-off through the shared sprinkler system of animal waste,” Foster said. “We’re concerned about fleas and ticks.” With a smaller space, Foster believes her kids will not be able to play like they once did. No more Jog-athons. No more parachutes. No more fun.“It’s the only grassy area where Village Elementary kids have for PE and recess,” Foster said. “Everything has been replaced by blacktop or artificial turf.”The school district’s proposal explains that the dog park will only be one-third of the entire green space, about one-quarter of an acre, with the entrance on the school district side. A double fence will separate the children's green space from the dog park. Plus, the City of Coronado will contribute ,000 to the district every year to maintain the area. That money will go directly back to Coronado kids.“If the elected officials of the school board didn’t think this was in the best interest of the students, I don’t see that they would be doing this,” Holidais Moreira said. Moreira has been working for two years to get a fenced-in dog park in the city, especially for her 13-year-old rescue, Happy Kapi. Kapi’s joints are not what they used to be, so the dog beach is not an option. A ride to the Cays dog park is not far. But she said she would rather take her dog to a dog park that is fenced-in.The district is now asking Council for a one-year trial period to evaluate the use of impact on the community.“Every park allows children. Not every one allows dogs,” Moreira said. “As a resident and a taxpayer, I see no reason why those of us who have dogs should not have the same rights as the other people who have kids and think those parks should be only reserved for children.” “People of Coronado want a dog park, a safe place that their dogs can run and play,” Foster agreed. “But we should look at other options in the city where that can happen, where it’s not a detriment to the children.”The Coronado City Council will be discussing the issue at their next council meeting on Tuesday, August 21 at 4 pm. 3193

Crews at a construction site in Denver, Colorado, are working around the clock, trying to keep up with an increased demand by building more housing.“It’s getting really interesting out there isn’t it,” said Stephen Myers CEO at Thrive Home Builders.Myers says though the real estate market is booming across the country, an increased cost of lumber is cutting into builders’ profits.“The increase is ,000 to 12,000 per house,” he said of his current project. “And we’re concerned about the ultimate price impact for our buyers.”According to the National Association of Home Builders, the price of lumber has increased by 173% since mid-April to an all-time high in August.“Without a doubt, the housing prices will go up because lumber is a very important input of houses,” said Kishore Kulkarni, Ph.D. a professor of economics at MSU Denver.Kulkarni says there’s multiple reasons why lumber prices have skyrocketed during the last few months, including higher transportation costs, some lumber mills shutting down, low interest rates and more people looking to purchase homes during the pandemic.“The supply of lumber is having a lot of bottlenecks because of COVID-19,” he said,This is pushing up the price of a typical new home by more than ,000, according to the National Association of Home Builders.Back on the job site, Myers’ team is pulling out the blueprints and looking for ways to offset higher lumber prices.“Hopefully the lumber supply can rise to the occasion to meet the increased demand,” Myers said.While crews continue to frame new houses, experts predict the cost of lumber won’t level.So, for now, prices will continue going through the roof. 1676

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced that their giraffe, named Cami, died early Saturday morning after having a Caesarian section to deliver her calf, which died shortly after delivery.Cami collapsed around 1 a.m. and was unable to return to her feet. She died shortly after.Cami went into labor on Dec. 4 and veterinarians discovered the baby giraffe was presenting hooves first, a condition with extremely low survival rates, according to zoo officials.The Zoo’s animal care team performed an emergency C-section. After the calf was removed, the veterinary team found that the calf had serious congenital defects and would not have survived even if it had been born front hooves first, officials said.Cami was a 6-year-old Masai giraffe that came to the Columbus Zoo in 2013 from the Nashville Zoo.The death of Cami and her calf mark the third Masai giraffe to die in the past 30 days at the zoo. CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A copy of a school quiz entitled "Does Nikolas Cruz Deserve to Die?" recently gained a lot of attention on social media.The quiz was meant to be an assignment on the death penalty. School officials say it was distributed to students at Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs, Florida last week. The high school is just a few miles away from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where Cruz shot and killed 17 students and staff earlier this year.Stoneman Douglas parents like Cindy Levine are furious."These people lost their children, for crying out loud," Levine said. "And my son could have been one of them."The outrage spilled onto social media. Stoneman Douglas survivor and student activist Cameron Kasky, quoted in the quiz, tweeted "I cannot begin to express how pathetic I find this." School board critic Andrew Pollack, who lost his daughter in the school shooting, tweeted: "This is absolutely despicable."
