A North Texas woman took her battle against breast cancer public, allowing the world a front row seat in the operating room while doctors perform her lumpectomy.Before heading to the hospital today, DeSoto resident Sonia Johnson spent a lot of quiet time with her family. But this morning the 50-year-old will be seen by the world as she undergoes breast cancer surgery live on Facebook.It was last December when, during a routine visit to the doctor, Johnson found out she had a tumor on her breast. It was in that moment that she became determined to use faith and positivity to beat a disease that affects one in eight women.“It’s an emotional journey, but you can’t sit,” she said. “You’ve got to be mentally ready to walk this journey. It’s a fight, it’s a fight all the way.”Johnson found she’s not alone in her fight and has gotten scores of supportive messages from breast cancer survivors — forming a sort of sisterhood. She says sharing her journey on Facebook is one way she can help others fighting the same battle.Breast surgical oncologist Allison DiPasquale, MD, will be performing the surgery. She spoke about her admiration for Johnson when talking with CBS 11 News. “This patient is courageous, she’s amazing. She’s putting her body out there for people to say, ‘Wow, I’m going to go get my mammogram and I’m going to make sure I don’t have cancer.’”Johnson said she hopes that by sharing her experience online others will get a better understanding about one of the breast cancer treatments available.“Other people paid it forward before me and now I’m pushing it and paying it forward for somebody else,” she said.During Johnson’s procedure, doctors will go through her armpit to remove her lymph nodes and cancer through the same incision and when the surgical gloves and gowns are gone Johnson plans to join that sisterhood of breast cancer survivors.“I will be able to say ‘I had cancer’. Right now I say I have cancer. A rent-control style bill that would cap annual rent increases is advancing in Sacramento.The bill, by Democrat Assemblyman David Chiu, would limit annual rent increases to 5 percent plus inflation. Currently, market landlords in San Diego County can raise the rent as much as they want at the end of a lease. Adam Moody, of Pacific Beach, just saw his rent go up by 0 a month, or 10 percent. "We're thinking about moving somewhere because if it's going to keep increasing, we'd rather maybe get a house or something," said Moody, who lives with his wife. The bill, AB 1482, made it out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee Wednesday. It will now advance to the full assembly floor before moving to the state senate side. With inflation, the cap in San Diego County would be 7.2 percent, which is nearly three times faster than wage growth. Molly Kirkland, public affairs director for the Southern California Rental Housing Association, said the organization opposes the bill. She said legislation like this turns off developers from building more much-needed housing, and can lead to the current supply going unrepaired. "The five percent plus CPI (inflation) may be enough if you don't have significant operational costs, if you don't need a new roof, but that's not a certainty," she said.Moody says he supports the cap. He says there must be a happy medium for landlords to be profitable, while allowing renters to keep affording where they live. Gov. Gavin Newsom has not indicated whether he would sign the bill. A Polk County, Florida woman was arrested earlier this month after she reportedly brought "her meth" with her to a doctor's office to have it tested. Barbara Ray, 73, of Polk County, told the staff at the doctor's office that she had been taking meth for about a month, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. She said she brought the drugs with her so that she and "her meth" could be tested to make sure all was well. The Sheriff's Office was called and a deputy responded to the office. The deputy tested the drugs and found it was in fact methamphetamine. Ray was arrested on November 5. She was charged with 2 counts of Possession of Methamphetamine, and 2 counts of Possession of Narcotic Paraphernalia. She was booked into the Polk County Jail on Monday, November 5, 2018 and released on Wednesday, November 7, 2018.  864
