(AP) -- California health officials have reported the state's first coronavirus death of a child.The state Department of Public Health said Friday the victim was a teenager, had other health conditions and died in the Central Valley.No other details were released.The state's death toll surpassed 9,000 on Friday, and three-quarters were 65 and older.Only about 9% of California's half-million confirmed virus cases are children, and very few have suffered conditions serious enough for hospitalization.Scientists still aren't certain why children don't seem to be as seriously affected by the virus as adults. 637

That number is up 3 percent from the start of the 2006 recession.Industries, like the trucking industry, who years ago might not have given Blocksom a shot, could now do just that.“The shortage of drivers spans the entire country and virtually every trucking company in the United States," Frank Gagyi, President of the Buckeye Interimobile Trucking company in Cleveland said.And that’s where Blocksom is hoping a door will open.“I've always liked driving, so I figured that I'd like to be able to make some money driving," he said.Since his wife's been ill, he's had to sell his home, mobile trailer and other assets to cover expenses. Now he says trucking is a practical solution for income.“That would be the best way to do it," he said.And though it’s something he has to do, he’s pretty optimistic about trying something new."I believe I can do this pretty well, and it would be a nice challenge and it'd be fun,” he said.Blocksom still has to pass his commercial driver's licenses test for him to start working. SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Legislation was announced Thursday to raise the purchasing age of long guns such as rifles and shotguns from 18 to 21 in California.The legislation was introduced by Assemblymember Rob Bonta, a Democrat from Oakland.Assembly Bill 3 would mirror existing laws for purchasing handguns which state that a person must be at least 21-years-old to purchase a handgun.“California already wisely mandates that someone be at least 21 years of age to purchase a handgun,” said Assemblymember Bonta. “It’s time to extend that common-sense law to long guns in order to enhance public safety.”"We must take every reasonable measure to protect Californians from gun violence," said Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco), Joint Author of the bill.According to a 2015 report by the FBI, adults 18 to 20 represent four percent of the population but commit 17 percent of gun homicides.“Californians under age 21 can’t purchase alcohol, tobacco and other health hazardous items,” said Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), Principal Co-Author of AB 3. ”So why should they be able to buy guns? SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new California bill would require some retailers to have gender neutral floor space inside their stores, Politico reports. The bill, called Assembly Bill 2826, was introduced by Assemblymember Evan Low, a Democrat from Campbell. According to Politico, retailers would be able to sell the same products, as long as they dedicate space where customers can find clothes and toys regardless of whether the items have been marketed to boys or girls. “Keeping similar items that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys separated makes it more difficult for the consumer to compare the products and incorrectly implies that their use by one gender is inappropriate,” the bill states. Right now, dozens of train cars carrying 10 million pounds of poop are stranded in a rural Alabama rail yard. Technically it's biowaste, but to the 982 residents in the small town of Parrish, that's just semantics.They want it gone. The load has been there for almost two months, and it's making the whole place smell like a rotting animal carcass.To add insult to injury, it isn't even their poop. For the last year, waste management facilities in New York and one in New Jersey have been shipping tons of biowaste -- literally, tons -- to Big Sky Environmental, a private landfill in Adamsville, Alabama. But in January, the neighboring town of West Jefferson filed an injunction against Big Sky to keep the sludge from being stored in a nearby rail yard.It was successful -- but as a result, the poo already in transit got moved to Parrish,?where there are no zoning laws to prevent the waste from being stored. 937
