Frank Avruch, who was best known for playing Bozo the Clown, died Tuesday at the age of 89, according to his manager Stuart Hersh."While it's hard to say goodbye, we celebrate the legacy of joy and laughter he brought to millions of children around the world as Bozo the Clown on TV and as a UNICEF Ambassador and later as host of Channel 5's Great Entertainment and Boston's Man About Town," a statement from Avruch's family read. "Our dad loved the children of all ages who remembered being on his show and was always grateful for their kind words. We will miss him greatly."Bozo made his television debut in 1949, portrayed by Pinto Colvig. In 1965, "Bozo's Big Top" became a syndicated series in local markets across the country.Avruch played Bozo from 1959 to 1970 and was the first nationally syndicated version of the clown. Other performers of the popular character were Willard Scott, Bob Bell and Joey D'Auria.Avruch worked at WCVB in Boston for more than 40 years and was inducted into the National Television Academy's Gold Circle."He had a heart of gold," Hersh said in a statement to CNN. "He brought the Bozo the Clown character to life better than anyone else's portrayal of Bozo the Clown."Avruch is survived by his wife, Betty and their two sons.The-CNN-Wire 1284
France is to suspend a planned fuel price hike after "yellow vest" protests erupted into violence over the weekend, prompting calls for calm and government talks.According to CNN affiliate BFMTV, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe will announce a moratorium Tuesday on fuel price hikes, which had been scheduled to come into effect on January 1.The rising cost of gasoline and diesel fuel sparked protests which have since evolved into broader demonstrations against President Emmanuel Macron's government, exposing tensions between the metropolitan elite and rural poor. The protests take their name from the high-visibility "yellow vests" or "gilets jaunes" that drivers are required to keep in their vehicles for safety reasons.Macron had requested political leaders meet the protest organizers this week. However on Monday two protest leaders, Benjamin Cauchy and Jacqueline Moreau, pulled out of a meeting with Prime Minister Philippe planned for Tuesday, according to the movement's spokesman Maxime Nicole.Philippe canceled a trip to the COP24 climate conference in Poland to address the issue, which had threatened to flare again this coming weekend. The government is likely hoping the suspension of the fuel hikes will take some heat out of the protests, which brought an estimated 36,000 people onto the streets of France on Saturday.Around 400 people were arrested after a violent minority turned on police, throwing projectiles and vandalizing statues. The city's famed Arc de Triomphe was scrawled with slogans in support of the yellow vest movement and others criticizing Macron as the President "of the rich."Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz said that among the protesters were people from across the country who had descended upon Paris with the express intent of causing trouble. He added that authorities would crack down hardest on those who had joined the street demonstrations explicitly carry out violent acts. 1929

Forget the diamond, the most intense Major League baseball smack talk is happening on Twitter.Especially when it comes to the Milwaukee Brewers needling their rivals. After several teams canceled Sunday’s games because of snowy conditions, the Brewers posted a photo of Miller Park with the caption, “Not having a roof on your home sounds miserable in this weather.” 384
For just the third time on record, a fourth tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic basin by the end of June, marking an active start to hurricane season.Tropical Storm Dolly formed on Tuesday off the coast of Maine, packing top winds of 45 MPH as of the 5 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center. The system is not expected to strengthen into a hurricane, and should weaken into a depression over the next day.The system is notable as it’s the second-earliest system to use a “D” name in the Atlantic.Last month, experts from the National Hurricane Center said that the 2020 hurricane season would likely be above average.“NOAA’s analysis of current and seasonal atmospheric conditions reveals a recipe for an active Atlantic hurricane season this year,” said Neil Jacobs, Ph.D., acting NOAA administrator. “Our skilled forecasters, coupled with upgrades to our computer models and observing technologies, will provide accurate and timely forecasts to protect life and property.”Government forecasts projected there would be 13 to 19 tropical storms in the Atlantic. The last four hurricane seasons have been considered above average, with 2019 measuring as the fourth-most active Atlantic hurricane season in history. 1238
FORESTHILL, Calif. (AP) — California park officials have shut vehicle access to a pristine swimming hole in Northern California due to an influx of visitors to the “hidden gem” that has become a popular photo backdrop on social media. The move intended to discourage visitors to Yankee Jim's, a sliver of crystal clear water about 35 miles west of Lake Tahoe, comes as authorities struggle to control overcrowding at recreational sites as coronavirus cases continue to rise in many parts of the state. There are just 12 parking spots near Yankee Jim’s, but last weekend authorities counted more than 300 vehicles parked near the rugged roads surrounding a one-way bridge overhead.Placer County Sheriff’s officials said in a Facebook posting on Friday that the scenic area has exploded in popularity recently."This presents a huge public safety danger, and cannot allow any first responder to access Yankee Jim’s in the event of any emergency or fire," the statement said. 979
