SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Eight new cases of hepatitis A were reported throughout the county over the last week, according to the San Diego County Health Department. In total, 544 cases of hepatitis A have been reported throughout San Diego County. The new numbers come after the Board of Supervisors Monday extended the state of emergency amid the hep A outbreak.  RELATED: Board of Supervisors extends state of emergency for hepatitis A outbreakSince the outbreak began, 20 people have died from the infection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For several months, San Diegans were invited to weigh in on the Port Master Plan proposal. It's the Port of San Diego's first comprehensive update in nearly 40 years, aiming to reflect changes in the needs and priorities of the region. The Port manages 34 miles of San Diego Bay and Waterfront along Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City, and San Diego. When the Port published the proposed master plan in April, several communities voiced major concerns; two of the most vocal being Coronado and Point Loma residents. "We have this little slice of history, and I think it's our obligation to preserve, so it's enjoyed generations to come," said Cameron Lilley, a multi-generational Point Loma native.For months, Lilley has been garnering community support in opposition to some of the proposals impacting Shelter Island. "We started digging into it and quickly realized that there were so many points that really didn't consider the locals in the restructure of our community," said Lilley. Some of their primary concerns:Up to 1600 new hotel rooms70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant spaceRemoving private and historic docksThe Port received nearly 3,000 comment letters in response to its initial proposal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Five people who witnessed a potentially deadly situation were honored by the California Highway Patrol Friday to taking action that helped save a man's life.Dennis McNea is a driver for the Freeway Service Patrol. His job is to help stranded motorists. But Nov. 13, 2019, he was driving on State Route 94 when he suffered a medical emergency. "Almost hit me," said witness Gina de la Torre, a Navy sailor who was on her way home at the time. "And as I saw him, he was hitting the highway barrier and I noticed that he was slumped over in his car."RELATED: Community helps man devoted to keeping park cleanAnother witness, Alberto Robles, used his own truck to make contact with McNea's, slowing them both down to a stop. The other four, including de la Torre, stopped to help. "They just kind of stopped and looked at me like, 'What do we do?'" she told 10News. "So that's when I was like, okay, keep calm and just do whatever you have to do."They performed CPR until medics arrived. "I don't remember what happened to me at all," McNea said. "I woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. "A million thanks is not enough. They gave me a lottery ticket. They gave me life. He says he plans to take CPR training so he can provide the same life-saving support he received to others in need. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds are getting tested for coronavirus before Thanksgiving hoping to keep their family safe. Medical experts say it's not necessarily going to work.The lines were hours long in front of a Linda Vista testing site, just as long at sites around the county Sunday."There's a worrisome reason for that, people are planning to go visit their older relatives and they think they're going to be 100% safe," Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego said getting tested Sunday or any day leading up to Thanksgiving could give you a false negative."If I get tested now, it doesn't mean that I'm not infected, it just means that I'm not actively shedding the virus," Smith said.According to the CDC the incubation period for the virus is 2-14 days."I thought Halloween was going to be the scary part of the year but November, December, January are just going to be really tough I think. We've got Thanksgiving coming up, then we have Christmas coming up and then New Year's and everybody is tired of being on lock down, it breaks my heart," Dr. Smith said leaning back in his chair.Data shows after each holiday this year, we've seen a spike in cases.The CDC and Dr. Smith urge everyone to gather virtually, or in small groups outside, socially distance and wash your hands often.We all know 2020 has been the year of sacrifices and Dr. Smith feels it too, "I'm really grateful for my niece who I have not met yet, because of the pandemic, I am so excited, I get pictures every day, so I'm pretty happy."All of us hopeful next year we can all be with our loved ones."If we can just get through the winter, I promise these vaccines and treatments are really going to change everything and that just means there will be more of us to celebrate next year," Dr. Smith said. 1811

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Gun control activists filled Balboa Park Thursday, demanding gun control for the safety of students.Wendy Wheatcroft, the director of "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America, says the event was in response to the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.  As a mother of three, she was horrified.“I want to be able to do everything in my power to make sure they grow up in a safe environment,” Wheatcroft said.RELATED: Victims of Parkland shootingWheatcroft says California has some of the toughest gun laws in the country and should be the model for the federal level.“In California, we have a gun law called the gun violence restraining order and this allows people to remove weapons from someone they deem to be a threat to themselves or others,” she said.  “If they had this law in Florida, they could have prevented this from happening.”RELATED: Vigil held for Parkland shooting victimsJim Miller is with the San Diego Gun Owner’s Political Action Committee.
