SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As temperatures hit highs across the county's eastern portion, officials are taking annual precautions to close several popular hiking areas.Six county parks will be closed throughout August, including El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center, Mt. Gower Preserve near Ramona, Wilderness Gardens in Pala, Agua Caliente Regional Park in Anza Borrego, and Vallecito County Park near Julian.Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park are closed all summer until Labor Day weekend.The closure also gives park staff the chance to perform maintenance and other upgrades and restoration projects.For hiking and park areas that remain open all summer, county Parks and Recreation officials encourage visitors to always hike with others, leave pets at home on difficult hikes, take plenty of water and food, and dress appropriately for the activity. 913

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community leaders and residents gathered Friday to remember a San Diego civic icon.Reverend George Walker Smith died on Feb.15 at the age of 91. A memorial to honor Smith at Christ United Presbyterian Church, where he led mass for decades, was held at 11 a.m. Friday."We kind of thought of Rev. Smith as the black godfather of San Diego, and of this church, because he helped so many people," Delores McNeely, a church member of 30 years, told 10News in February.Smith was the first African American to be elected in the city when he won the race for the San Diego Board of Education in 1963. He also started the Catfish Club, where weekly lunches served as a gathering for locals interested in civic or political issues in the community.The forums began at the church, but were eventually moved to Channel 10 when the attendance became too large."All the political leaders in the community came, and we had this huge forum, and they listened to him. And if something were going on in the community, the first person that they would call was Rev. Smith," said McNeely. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction has started on Mission Valley's first public elementary school.The new preschool through 5th-grade campus at the corner of Via Alta and Civita Boulevard will serve residents living in the Civita residential development. Families living in the Mission Valley and Fashion Valley neighborhoods will also make use of the new school.The campus will feature classrooms with roll-up doors that open to the outside for 1st- through 5th-grade students; dedicated play areas for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st- through 5th-grade students; "makerspaces" for students; and an indoor-outdoor multipurpose facility.San Deigo Unified School District provided a virtual walkthrough of the campus here."With more significant growth planned in the area, we must prepare for the influx of new families and students," said Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President. "This community deserves a quality neighborhood school."The campus will enroll up to 500 students and construction is expected to finish in spring 2022.The new school is funded through 2012's voter-approved Proposition Z bond measure, state schools facilities funding, and developer fees, according to San Diego Unified School District. 1231

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the world grieves the loss of Aretha Franklin, a local woman is recalling her final and historic San Diego concert on Shelter Island.Linda Moody is the widow of saxophone legend James Moody, who died in 2010. In 2005 during a newspaper interview, an excited Franklin, in town for a concert, learned Moody lived in San Diego.
