(KGTV) -- The longest-serving mail carrier in Carlsbad is set to retire Friday after 58 years of service.Mack Mata Jr. will be recognized Friday in front of his peers and family.“It’s not often we celebrate an employee who has served the Postal Service for 58 years,” said Postmaster Cindy Gibson.In the fall of 1960, Mata and his fiancée were downtown when she saw a “help wanted” sign in the window of the post office. After applying and completing a test, Mata was sworn in as a postal employee in Carlsbad in November of the same year.Mata recalled his fond memories at the office, saying he would watch kids grow up and move away only to return and become his customers.Mata also remembers the time he saved a woman along his route. “One day, something told me I should check on her and sure enough, I found her lying on the ground after she had fallen and couldn’t get up. She said, ‘I knew you’d eventually show up to help me.'A lot has changed since then. CDC Director Robert Redfield stated on Thursday during the first White House coronavirus task force briefing held since July that schools should remain open during the pandemic, despite a number of major school districts going virtual only in recent weeks.This week, New York City became the latest major school district to close building amid a surge in cases across the country.“Today, there is extensive data that we have gathered over the last two to three months to confirm that k-12 schools can operate with face-to-face learning and they can do it safely and they can do it responsibly," Redfield said. "The infections we have identified in the schools, when they have been evaluating, were not acquired in schools. They were acquired in the community and the household.”CDC data released in October indicated that children can spread the virus within schools, but children under the age of 10 were less likely to do so. (KGTV) - Nearly two and a half miles of the current border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in Calexico are being replaced with 30-foot high, bollard-style walls.The section of the replacement, which broke ground last week, extends from the Calexico Port of Entry westward just past Gran Plaza Outlets, according to Customs and Border Protection officials. Carey Dean Moore, 60, a convicted murderer of two 47-year-old fathers in 1979, has become Nebraska's first execution by lethal injection.The execution by lethal injection — by way of a four-drug combination that's never been previously used in an execution — started at 10 a.m. Tuesday, as scheduled. He was declared dead at 10:47 a.m. Tuesday."This agency has done so with professionalism, respect for the process, and dignity for all involved," said Department of Corrections Director Scott Frakes in a press conference following the execution.The body will be remanded into the custody of the Nebraska State Patrol, he said, and an autopsy will be conducted.Ten witnesses observed Tuesday's execution: three inmate witnesses, a member of the clergy, four media witnesses, and two staff members.During the press conference, media witness Grant Schulte of the Associated Press recounted the details of Moore's final moments, as well as his final statement:"Just the statement that I hand-delivered to you already about my brother, Donny, and the innocent men on Nebraska's Death Row."Omaha World-Herald reporter Joe Duggan, another of the media witnesses, said Moore remained composed throughout the process."He certainly looked maybe slightly shaken.
