SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man fell to his death from state Route 125 in the Bonita area Tuesday morning after a crash in which his car struck and killed a deer on the freeway.Friends told 10News the victim was Martin Lapisch, 44, a Chula Vista resident who is survived by his wife, Linda, and 15-month-old son Kenneth. He was a German immigrant who became a U.S. citizen in 2003, friends said.“He was a new dad with big dreams, whose life was cut short after a terrible, early morning accident," said a close friend of the victim. “He was a loving father, husband, brother and an awesome friend. He always helped people in need and never asked anything in return," said Lapisch's friend Peter Kritzko.Friends and family gathered together after the incident at Lapisch's home and spoke with 10News but asked not to be identified at this time.California Highway Patrol Sgt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A San Diego fire captain convicted of domestic violence was sentenced Wednesday.Steven Michaels received three years probation, 52 weeks of counseling and 180 days of custody which will be served in a county parole and alternative custody program, according to City News Service.Michaels, a veteran fire captain with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, pleaded guilty in 2017 to shoving his girlfriend against a wall and refusing to let her use a phone to call for help, CNS reported.RELATED: Veteran San Diego fire captain pleads guilty to domestic violence chargeMichaels filed a request to have the felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor, but Judge Timothy Walsh denied the request citing a history of alcohol-related incidents of domestic violence. The felony conviction will likely cause Michaels to lose his job."He's taken away his career," said Walsh," if there is a career left. Four times!"When asked if Michaels was still employed by the department, Monica Munoz, a spokesperson for San Diego Fire-Rescue, only said, “we can’t give information about personnel issues.”10News has also requested comment from a spokesperson with SDFD's personnel department. Public records website, Transparent California, shows Michaels made 3,407 in 2016.The victim, Jane Doe, initially told investigators she feared for her safety, according to prosecutors. However, at the sentencing hearing she told the court she did not wish for Michaels to be convicted.Verna Tabor with the Center for Community Solutions says it is not uncommon for victims to blame themselves. Her organization has a 24-hour tip-line for anyone who wants resources for domestic abuse. The number is (888) DV-LINKS or (888) 385-4657. 1745

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local group is teaming up with a non-profit organization to help fight the unemployment rates among young adults in San Diego. Casa Familia came up with the idea to start a coffee cart, training teenagers and 20-year-olds in different skills to run the coffee business. San Ysidro Health Center jumped on board to help with the funding of the project. Ana Melgoza is the Vice President of General Affairs for San Ysidro Health Center. She tells 10News it was an obvious decision."We said 'yes, of course' as soon as Casa Familia approached us with this wonderful and innovative endeavor," Melgoza said.El K-Fe hired six baristas, graduates of Casa Familiar's youth barista training program. The ,000 coffee cart now sits in the central hub of the health center. The baristas and managers are all young adults who have gone through many months of training. Francisco Dominguez is a student at Southwestern College and among the first to join the project."It’s kind of giving hope to the youth that think that they don't have a chance. They have a chance; we all have a chance. I started out like them now I'm looking forward to what the future has and what I can do with this and what we can do as a team," said Dominguez.Dominguez said the project is beneficial for many reasons but mostly for the skills learned at such a young age."Most jobs are 18 and older, so with this internship, it's 14 and older; so high school students: sophomores, freshmen, juniors, seniors in high school, can join the program, can get that job experience they need so once they graduate, they can get that job."The plan is to reinvest proceeds from the first El K-Fe coffee cart to establish more carts and create more youth job and training opportunities.  1820

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man suspected of causing serious injuries that left a man in a coma-like state for nearly four years before his eventual death was arrested earlier this month, San Diego police announced Tuesday.San Diego police said 42-year-old Manuel Lopez was identified by investigators as the suspect in the death of Allen Stokes and was taken into custody on Sept. 3, on suspicion of murder. On March 12, 2016, Stokes was found unresponsive in an apartment building in the 7100 block of El Cajon Boulevard. Stokes was taken to the hospital for treatment, but his condition never improved.According to police, Stokes “remained in a conscious, yet unresponsive state, until his death” on Nov. 8, 2019.The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Stokes’ death “was the result of injuries received in March of 2016.”Stokes was 67 years old at the time he was injured. He was 72 years old when he died, police stated. After Stokes’ death was determined to be a homicide, investigators gathered evidence and spoke to those who knew the victim and eventually identified Lopez as a suspect in the case.Police said Lopez was booked into County Jail following his arrest.During Lopez's Tuesday afternoon arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Mary Naoom alleged a mallet was used in the killing. In entering his plea, Lopez told San Diego County Superior Court Judge Peter Deddeh, `"`I'm innocent."Lopez was ordered held on million bail and a bail review hearing was set next week in his case.Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. 1643
