AUSTIN, Texas – While it can be hard to get your hands on hand sanitizer amid the coronavirus outbreak, you should do your homework before making your own. One man said he was turning to Tito’s Handmade Vodka to make some sanitizer for his family, but the company quickly shot him down. Per the CDC, hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60% alcohol. Tito's Handmade Vodka is 40% alcohol, and therefore does not meet the current recommendation of the CDC. Please see attached for more information. 513

As signature cherry blossom trees go through peak bloom in the nation’s capital, officials in the District of Columbia are resorting to mass street closures to keep large crowds away in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.Public officials are publicly pleading for low turnout and one prominent local chef has launched the #StayHomeCherryBlossomsChallenge to make low visitation numbers into some sort of community goal. Health officials have said limiting public gatherings and keeping a distance of about 6 feet from others would help stop the spread of the disease which has sickened about 300,000 worldwide. The Metropolitan Police Department closed down a a dozen different streets, bridges and traffic circles Sunday morning trying to limit the traditional crowds who pack the area around the Jefferson Memorial and the tree-lined Tidal Basin. The iconic cherry blossoms reached peak bloom on Friday and should stay that way for about 10 days.“It’s getting weirder and weirder,” said National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst of his unprecedented challenge to keep one of Washington’s crown jewels as empty as possible.Officials are instead steering cherry blossom fans to their 1201

As Tropical Storm Nestor churns in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, it is ready to take aim at the Big Bend of Florida, an area already devastated last year by Hurricane Michael. Although Nestor will not be nearly as powerful as Michael at landfall, the tropical storm could bring damaging winds and storm surge to parts of Florida. As of 4 p.m. CT on Friday, Tropical Storm Nestor’s top sustained winds were 60 MPH, with higher gusts. The storm has a large wind field, which means storm surge could reach five feet in the Big Bend of Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. The National Hurricane Center said on Friday the storm could strengthen until landfall. Tropical storm and storm surge warnings have been issued along the Gulf Coast from Navarre, Florida to Yankeetown, Florida.Local officials have closed some beaches in the Big Bend and issued mandatory evacuations in areas prone to flooding. Nestor became better organized on Friday, officially attaining tropical storm status midday on Friday. After making landfall early Saturday morning, Nestor is expected to become extratropical, but still bring tropical storm-like conditions to parts of Georgia and the Carolinas, according to a National Hurricane Center forecast. The path of Tropical Storm Nestor could go over the same area hit by Hurricane Michael last year. Hurricane Michael was the first Category 5 hurricane to hit the continental U.S. since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. 1466
