HOUSTON — An Associated Press review of medical records for four detained immigrant women and interviews with lawyers have revealed growing allegations that a gynecologist performed surgeries and other procedures that the women never sought or didn't fully understand.Dr. Mahendra Amin was linked this week to allegations of unwanted hysterectomies performed on immigrant women at Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia.Some procedures could be justified based on problems noted in the medical records, but lawyers and medical experts say the women's lack of consent or knowledge raises severe legal and ethical issues.Amin provided gynecological treatment or performed surgery on eight women dating back to 2017, including one hysterectomy, according to an attorney an immigration and civil rights lawyer working with attorneys to investigate medical treatment at the detention center.The AP's report comes days after a nurse's complaint at the detention center was widely published. Dawn Wooten claimed that many immigrant women were taken to an unidentified doctor she called the "uterus collector" because of how many hysterectomies he performed.In an interview with The Intercept, Amin said he performed "one or two hysterectomies in the past three years." HIs lawyer told the AP that Amin was looking forward to the "facts coming out," and claimed that he would be cleared of wrongdoing.The AP did not find evidence of the "mass hysterectomies" that Wooten alleged. Wooten's complaint prompted outrage from Democrats and an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General.LaSalle Corrections, the private prison company that operates the jail, "strongly" refuted the "allegations and any implications of misconduct." (KGTV) — The body of a man was discovered floating in the water just north of the U.S.-Mexico border near Border Field State Park Friday.San Diego Sheriff's deputies were called in to assist Border Patrol officers just before 5:30 p.m. after the discovery. Border Patrol agents pulled the man to shore where San Diego Fire Department crews responded to provide life-saving measures.The man was pronounced dead at the scene. (KGTV) - Organizers of the Imperial Beach Sun and Sea Festival say they're ready to go this year, despite a recent sewage spill from Tijuana."It's always on my mind," says Co-Chair Shirley Nakawatase. "I think it's an ongoing situation that we have at the beach."Nakawatase says the spill shouldn't impact the festival, because they only use ocean water for the sandcastle competition. If the water is considered unsafe, they can use fresh water purchased from Cal-Am."We're going to request daily testing to make sure the bacteria count is low," she says, noting that testing will begin on the Monday before the festival.A recent sewage spill dumped 3.5 million gallons of sewage into the ocean south of Imperial Beach, prompting a full closure of the coast in the area. Hurricane warnings are up for some of the Louisiana gulf coast as Hurricane Delta is expected to cross the Gulf of Mexico and strike the state later this week.Hurricane Delta made landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula Wednesday morning and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) expects the storm to continue moving northward and bring "life-threatening" storm surge to the Gulf Coast late this week.According to the NHC, Delta made landfall near Puerto Morelos, Mexico with 110 mph winds, making it a strong Category 2 storm. The Yucatan Peninsula is home to many Mexican resort towns, including Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Belize, a coastal country on the southern part of the peninsula, may also feel effects from Delta.Hurricane Delta weakened to Category 1 status after it emerged off the Yucatan Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday afternoon. As of the 10 p.m. CT Wednesday advisory by the NHC, Delta had top winds of 90 mph.The storm is expected to regain major hurricane status on Thursday, but make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane on Friday somewhere along the Gulf Coast. A hurricane warning was issued late Wednesday for areas from the Texas/Louisiana border to Morgan City, Louisiana. While the center of Hurricane Delta is not expected to be as intense as when the storm had peak winds of 145 mph on Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center expects the storm to grow in size, spreading the impacts over a wide area of the coast.
