CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A Tijuana police officer who allegedly took part in a plot to steal more than million from a Chula Vista home, which he and other defendants believed was a stash house containing drug money, was ordered Monday to stand trial on two conspiracy charges.Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, is accused of planning with five other men to rob the home in late January, after an undercover FBI agent told them a shipment of money would be delivered to the residence, according to testimony at the defendant's preliminary hearing.A fellow officer, Marco Quijas-Castillo, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to commit robbery and faces two years in state prison. Four others are also facing various charges in connection with the attempted theft.RELATED: 2 Tijuana police officers among group charged in Chula Vista home burglaryTestimony at Torres' preliminary hearing indicated the defendants were told two unarmed individuals would be inside the three-bedroom home, which was actually being rented by the FBI for the operation.The criminal complaint alleges Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 33, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 29, who traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres allegedly "provided counter-surveillance" at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance at the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and "entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house," the complaint alleges.The men had allegedly planned to tie up the two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home, according to testimony.The defendants are due back in court June 30 for a readiness conference. 2022

(KGTV) -- Chula Vista’s next city manager will be the first Hispanic and first woman to serve in that role.Maria Kachadoorian, who has worked for the City of Chula Vista for 22 years, will move from her position as Assistant City Manager and take over for the retiring Gary Halbert.Halbert has served as the City Manager since 2014, and he has been with the city since 2008. He is set to retire on June 19.As the City Manager, Kachadoorian will be in charge of overseeing and maintaining the city’s budget. She will also “advance the Chula Vista Bayfront development, launch Ambulance Transport Services, and foster initiatives that better connect the City’s diverse communities.”In a statement, Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said of Kachadoorian: “Maria has the knowledge, skills and vision we need to move the City forward during these unprecedented times. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A close family friend is speaking out after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed at a Chula Vista birthday party while defending his friend. Devin Griffiths was stabbed at a birthday party on the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista on January 31. Reid Schneider, a friend of the family, says the party was first advertised on the social media platform Snapchat. Schneider says there was a doorman at the party as well as security guards. Witnesses say an argument between Devin’s friend and another teenager escalated into a fight outside. Devin, who was not involved in the original fight, intervened to help his friend when he was stabbed. "They started hurting Devin’s friend. Devin jumped in and he was beat down pretty bad and stabbed a few times," Schneider said. "He had some severe brain damage. I guess he was considered dead on scene and they kind of brought him back."RELATED: 15-year-old stabbed, killed protecting friend at Chula Vista birthday partyDevin underwent at least five surgeries within the first 12 hours, according to Schneider. He died on February 16 after being taken off life support. "There was a lot of times where we thought there was hope and and unfortunately there was too much damage," Schneider added. Police told 10News Tuesday that the teen “passed away with his family at his side.”A candlelight vigil was held for the teen Wednesday night on the Helix High campus, which is where Devin went to school. A GoFundMe has also been set up to help the family. "He was a kid that has gone through a lot more obstacles than a lot of other kids and adults as a 15-year-old. And he was striving. He was striving and he was going to make something of his life," Schneider said.
