QINGDAO, Shandong, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's largest rail vehicle maker, CSR Corp. Ltd, over the weekend launched its first test train that features speeds reaching up to 500 km per hour.The six-car train with a fairshaped head is the newest in the CRH series. It has a maximum tractive power of 22,800 kilowatts, compared with 9,600 kilowatts for the CRH380 trains currently in service on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, which hold the world speed record of 300 km per hour.The grey-color train carrying testing and data processing facilities was designed and produced by CSR Sifang Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co., Ltd (Sifang Locomotive), a CSR subsidiary based in the coastal city of Qingdao in eastern Shandong province.Ding Sansan, the company's chief technician, said the concept of the the super-speed train design was inspired by China's ancient sword. The bodywork uses plastic materials reinforced with carbon fiber.Shen Zhiyun, a locomotive expert and academician with both the Chinese academies of sciences and engineering, said the testing of the super-speed train with speeds of up to 500 km per hour will provide useful reference for current high-speed railway operations.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will be honored posthumously with a Grammy award for his contributions to music technology, The Recording Academy announced on Wednesday.Jobs, who passed away Oct. 5 of pancreatic cancer, will receive a Trustees Award for helping create products "that transformed the way we consume music, TV, movies and books," the academy said in a prepared statement.The Apple Computer Inc. first received a Technical Grammy Award in 2002, for contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field, the academy said.Along with Jobs, bandleader and composer Dave Bartholomew, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder will also receive the award.The academy also picked the Allman Brothers, Glen Campbell, Diana Ross and Brazilian pianist/singer/guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim as recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards. Jobim was known for composing "The Girl from Ipanema," a worldwide hit in the mid-1960s which won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965.Other artists, including trumpeter Wayne Jackson, saxophonist Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns,country legend George Jones,and the late Gil Scott-Heron were also named as recipients.German sound-technology firm Celemony and the late audio engineer Roger Nichols, who worked with artists including Ross, Placido Domingo, James Taylor and Stevie Wonder, were recognized with Grammy Technical Awards."This year's honorees offer a variety of brilliance, contributions and lasting impressions on our culture," said President/CEO of The Recording Academy Neil Portnow. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Apple on Monday released a new version of its media player program iTunes, adding the much- anticipated scan-and-match service for music iTunes Match.The feature, included in iTunes 10.5.1, can scan a user's library to find music and match the content to the music available in iTunes Store. If it finds a match, users don't need to upload the music and can listen to them anywhere, even better-quality versions, on any devices running Apple's iOS operating system. Music that doesn't match is automatically uploaded.With a subscription fee of 24.99 U.S. dollars a year, users can store up to 25,000 of their own songs in Apple's cloud server. The iTunes Match is currently only available in the United States.Subscriptions for iTunes Match are unavailable for a while Monday morning due to excessive demand.The iTunes Match was first introduced in June along with Apple' s iCloud platform, the company's cloud service enabling users to sync their files, apps and content among Apple devices.Unlike Google and Amazon, Apple got the official blessings from all four major music labels, making the company only need to keep one copy of each song in its cloud server, eliminating the uploading work for users and redundancies for servers.When Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs introduced the feature in his last keynote address in June, he touted the feature as "an industry leading effort," saying that the 24.99-dollar price is cheaper than Amazon's offering and Google has not announced a price yet.The release is also ahead of Google's latest music push. WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) Friday launched a probe into certain products from China after several U.S. companies alleged their patents were infringed.The products in question include televisions and Blu-ray players produced by Haier Group of China and Vizio Inc. under Taiwan-based Amtran Technology Company and sold in the U.S. market, the USITC said.` Five U.S. technology companies filed a complaint with USITC last month, saying those products violated Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 by infringing their patents.Meanwhile, they requested the USITC issue an exclusion order and a cease and desist order against those products from China.The trade panel is scheduled to set a target date for completing the investigation within 45 days after institution of the probe. If the complaint is approved, the agency will ban importation of those products.The U.S. move came at a time when protectionism is making a comeback in the United States amid sluggish economic recovery.It is widely believed that such actions would only hurt U.S.- China trade relations that are increasingly critical to global economic recovery.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Miners, construction workers and people in hotel and food service industry are most likely to smoke in the U.S., according to new research finding.The finding was contained in a report released Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).According to the finding, miners and people in hotel and food service have a cigarette smoking rate of 30 percent, followed closely by construction workers' 29.7 percent.Both rates are much higher than the average smoking rate of 19.6 percent among all U.S. working adults.Workers in the education services industry have the lowest smoking rate, with 9.7 percent, followed by the 10.9 percent of workers in company management, the report said.Low education levels are a factor in high smoking rates, along with poverty and gender, said Ann Malarcher, senior scientific adviser at the CDC."Although some progress has been made in reducing smoking prevalence among working adults," the report wrote, "additional effective employer interventions need to be implemented."Smoking kills an estimated 443,000 each year in the U.S., costing about 193 billion U.S. dollars annually in direct health care expenses and productivity loss.
