ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - In one of the closest races this election cycle in San Diego County, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed added nine votes to his narrow lead Tuesday. He now holds a 29-vote advantage over challenger Paul McNamara.Abed is seeking a third term as mayor, first winning in 2010. He was previously a councilman from 2004-2010.Political analyst John Dadian told 10News he did not anticipate the race being so close. "I did not see it coming, so I am suprised. Going into the last week of the campaign, all the people I talked to that really know that area well, they did not see this coming."Dadian feels several factors are playing a role in tightening the race. He cites changing demographics in Escondido, pulling away from the city's long-time conservative majority. Another conservative incumbent, Ed Gallo, appears to be losing his seat, as well.In addition, Democrats in the region had a large turnout, based largely on the unsuccessful effort to oust Congressman Duncan Hunter. That large turnout may have had a down-ballot effect on the mayoral race.Dadian also sites Abed's controversial stance on immigration, leading Escondido's bid to support efforts against California's sanctuary laws and visiting the White House for a highly-publicized meeting with President Trump. Dadian believes that may have helped enthuse opposition against Abed.As of Tuesday night, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu says there are still 299,000 ballots to count county-wide. It is not known how many of those belong to Escondido voters, meaning it will likely be several days until the winner is known. 1630

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Graffiti referencing the New Zealand mass shooting that left 50 people dead was discovered at the scene of a possible arson at an Escondido mosque early Sunday morning. According to police, the fire started around 3:30 a.m. at the Islamic Center of Escondido located near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Escondido Boulevard. Police believe members of the mosque were able to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived. Seven people were inside when the fire was reportedly set. No one was injured and minimal damage was done to the building, according to police. "Our message to community is to make sure they keep a watchful eye out,'' Escondido Police Lt. Chris Lick said. "If they see something suspicious, especially around a house of worship, they should call police.''According to police, graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the mass shooting in New Zealand, though details on the graffiti weren't available. Police tell 10News they are investigating the incident as attempted arson and a possible hate crime. No suspects have been identified at this time. Following the fire, members of the mosque scheduled an interfaith prayer vigil. The event will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Islamic Center of Escondido. "Once again, we will stand together in love and prayer as we show our unified support for the members of this local Mosque and for the Muslim community at large. ENCINITAS (KGTV) -- The Encinitas Environmental Commission is considering a proposal to ban natural gas hookups in all new construction projects as a way to combat climate change.The plan, which will be heard by the commission again next month, was authored by environmental commissioner Jim Wang. Wang spearheaded the city’s bans on plastic bags and polystyrene containers, commonly known as styrofoam.“The problem is that methane is a much more potent global warming gas than CO2, it’s approximately 85 times as potent,” he said. “Even a small amount of natural gas causes a big problem with global warming.”RELATED: Encinitas proposes ban on gas-powered leaf blowersWang’s proposal would impact both residential and commercial construction, but would not affect existing buildings. In July, Berkley passed a ban on natural gas infrastructure in new construction that will take effect next year. Electricity accounts for 23 percent. Natural gas ranks third on the list, at 13 percent, according to the city’s 2018 Climate Action Plan.“Yes, it may be a little more expensive but it’s for the greater good,” Wang said.In addition to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, restrictions on natural gas could provide safety and health benefits, Wang argued, citing the 2010 San Bruno pipeline explosion that killed 8 people.Homes that cook with natural gas at least once per week have air quality that would be illegal outdoors, he said, with levels of nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde that exceed outdoor federal air quality standards.The Environmental Commission will consider the proposal at its Dec. 12 meeting at 5:30 pm. (KGTV) — Police are looking for a missing at-risk woman who disappeared in Escondido.Linda Hallam Brown, 67, has Alzheimer's disease and was last seen in the area of Mission Ave. and Quince St. at about 9:45 p.m. Friday.She is described as 5 feet 2 inches, 118 pounds, with dark grey shoulder-length hair and hazel eyes. ENCINITAS (KGTV)-- An Encinitas man is warning other pet parents of the dangers hidden at dog parks, one almost killing his fur baby Kelly.They were at Power Lines Dog Park Thursday evening, as usual, and something caught Kelly's sniffer."She would not stop searching through there," her owner James McDonald said. She was digging in the bushes, then stopped, craddling her foot.He thought, being an active dog as she is, she strained herself."I picked her up and carried her to the car... When I got her home she couldn't even walk," he said, "So I put her in our bed and just sacrificed the duvet, she can puke all over my duvet that's okay."He said it was extreme, and violent. He was terrified she would choke on her own vomit, so he compressed her chest each time to ensure she could breathe in air.He said she was completely limp. An hour of this goes by, then she started coming around, sort of."She would come to conscious with fear in her eyes, not knowing where she was, who she was or what was happening?" McDonald said.James knew she was poisoned but didn't want to take her to the vet."I wanted her to die comfortably, I'm sorry," he said choking back tears, "I wanted her to die comfortably in my arms, not in a cage with a needle stuck in her arm."That night his son found a bit of brownie on her paw, leading them to believe she found and ate a pot brownie.His sons had an idea of how it got there, "one son said he actually has hidden them in the park, another son said he's found them in the park."The whole incident drove McDonald to post on the Nextdoor app, to warn neighbors. He swore to never come back to that dog park, and only returned to tell his story of warning.The VCA said they've seen many more accidental poisonings since the legalization of pot in California. The San Diego Humane Society said pet parents need to lock up drugs in their home. McDonald said fellow pet lovers should also keep a watchful eye over their fur babies. 1991
