BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale medal on Tuesday for their prominent contributions to health care.     Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China, conferred the medals on the nurses at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Premier Wen Jiabao and senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang also attended the awarding ceremony.     Chinese nurses have made great contribution to the country's humanitarian cause, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu at the awarding ceremony.     A total of 28 nurses from 15 countries worldwide won the award this year.     The Florence Nightingale medal, which is the highest international honor for nurses, is being given for the 42nd time since its introduction in 1912.     "It honors exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims of armed conflict or other disasters, or exemplary service and a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the Web site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.     The award is named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English nurse known for her pioneering work to improve the care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).     A total of 54 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates for the award in 1983.

RABAT, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who is on a five-nation African tour, held talks Monday with his Moroccan counterpart Taieb Fassi Fihri on ways to upgrade relations between the two countries.     The two spoke highly of the abundant achievements that have been made in bilateral cooperation in various fields, mainly in politics, economy and trade, culture and health, since the establishment of diplomatic ties 52 years ago, an official press release gained by Xinhua said.     It said the two ministers agreed to continuously promote the upgrading of China-Morocco friendly ties by enhancing political mutual trust, deepening cooperation, expand people-to-people exchanges and strengthening coordination in international and regional issues.     After the talks, the two top diplomats signed a China-Morocco joint communique on Morocco's recognition of China's market economy status.     Yang is on his first official foreign visit of the year that includes five African nations, namely Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Algeria and Morocco, as well as Saudi Arabia.     It has been China's tradition for 20 years that its foreign minister visits Africa in the beginning of the year.

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The 4th Ministerial Conference of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC) wrapped up in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday, with the adoption of the Declaration of Sharm el-Sheikh and Sharm el-Sheikh Action Plan, defining new programs of cooperation between the two sides in the next three years.     The Declaration of Sharm el-Sheikh, the political document of the conference, sets forth the guiding principles of China-Africa cooperation, reflects the views and consensus of both sides on major international and regional issues and China-Africa relations, and expresses the hope to strengthen China-Africa cooperation under the new circumstances. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua)-- The United States welcomes the peaceful development of cross-Straits ties and "more positive and stable" cross-Straits relations, said a China-US Joint Statement issued here Tuesday.     The statement said that both sides underscored the importance of the Taiwan issue in China-US relations.     The Chinese side emphasized that the Taiwan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and expressed the hope that the US side will honor its relevant commitments and appreciate and support the Chinese side's position on this issue.     The US side stated that the United States follows its one-China policy and abides by the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiques, said the statement.     The two sides reiterated that "the fundamental principle of respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity is at the core of the three Sino-US joint communiques which guide China-US relations. Neither side supports any attempts by any force to undermine this principle," said the statement.     The two sides agreed that respecting each other's core interests is extremely important to ensure steady progress in China-US relations.     Both countries believe that to nurture and deepen bilateral strategic trust is essential to China-US relations in the new era.     The US side reiterated that it welcomes a strong, prosperous and successful China that plays a greater role in world affairs.     The two sides are of the view that in the 21st century, global challenges are growing, countries are more interdependent, and theneed for peace, development and cooperation is increasing. China and the U.S. have an increasingly broad base of cooperation and share increasingly important common responsibilities on many major issues concerning global stability and prosperity.     The two sides should further strengthen coordination and cooperation, work together to tackle challenges and promote world peace, security and prosperity, said the statement.     The two sides reiterated that they are committed to building a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-US relationship for the 21st century, and will take concrete actions to steadily build a partnership to address common challenges.     During their discussions, the Chinese side said that it resolutely follows the path of peaceful development and a win-win strategy of opening-up, and is committed to promoting the building of a harmonious world of enduring peace and common prosperity.     The U.S. is committed to working with other countries in addressing the most difficult international problems they face, said the statement.     China welcomes the United States as an Asia-Pacific nation that contributes to the peace, stability and prosperity in the region.     The statement was signed during U.S. President Barack Obama' s visit to China between November 15 and 18. 

BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao recently called for the whole nation to make further advancement in reform of the cadre and personnel system.     Vice President Xi Jinping, also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the indications on the issue as well, noting that more achievement should be made in building a scientific cadre's selection and appointment system.     The CPC central committee has approved the outline of deepening the reform of cadre and personnel system (2010-2020) and it has been formally released. The plan put forward the goal and major tasks of the reform in next ten years.     The plan stressed the importance in dealing key issues concerning leadership and cadre cultivation, in making correct standard of cadre appointment and in improving the public credibility of cadre selection.
