Teachers are talking candidly about the challenges this school year will bring. With many school districts in Virginia opting to start the school year with distance learning, one Hampton Roads social studies teacher shares his thoughts on how to help students have a virtually successful school year.Christopher True is a middle school social studies teacher who is gearing up for a new school year and the inevitable challenge that will come with it.True says communication is key to virtual success.“If that student is struggling with something, they may not be telling the parent.”He says parents should encourage their children not to be afraid to reach out to their teacher for help.True says the communication between students and teachers is just as important as the communication between the teachers and parents.He says parents shouldn’t be afraid of contacting teachers and describes virtual learning as “a community-led effort.”Schools will undoubtedly have expectations for students, even at home, but True hopes those expectations come leniency.“If you have a student whose parents work and [that student] actually has to go to daycare, they can't be expected to be in a class zoom at 10 a.m. if they don't have access to that stuff. And that's just going to be one of those things that we have to account for.”The test run of virtual learning at the end of last school year taught everyone new lessons, including that it takes time to adjust.While he’s banking on beginning the school year virtually, True is looking forward to connecting in the classroom once again.“There's no place I'd rather be. Target says they are kicking off the holiday season early this year by bringing back its 2-day sales event "Deal Days."The sales event is scheduled for Oct. 13 and 14, with more than double the deals than last year, the company announced.“This year, in a holiday season unlike any other, we know it’s more important than ever for our guests to get great deals in a convenient and safe shopping environment,” said Christina Hennington, executive vice president, and chief merchandising officer, Target, in the press release. “By kicking off our holiday deals earlier than ever, offering Black Friday pricing throughout the full month of November and extending our Price Match Guarantee, we’re letting guests know they don’t need to wait or face the crowds to get the best deals, all with no membership fees required.”Their event will be done alongside Amazon’s Prime Day, CNN reported.Target also added that they’d be offering Black Friday deals throughout the entire month of November for the first time.Last week, the company said they would be doubling its staff who will be solely responsible for contactless shopping options, like its “Drive Up” service.Target said they expect to hire the same amount of seasonal workers this year as they did in 2019, which was more than 130,000. 1293

The American Red Cross is now checking all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies, instead of just searching for recovered patients. The organization is calling it a “game changer.”“We can then not only inform that donor of the testing results that we've identified COVID-19 antibodies in their blood, but also use that product as convalescent plasma to help patients who are ill with COVID-19 in the hospital,” said Dr. Pampee Young, Chief Medical Officer at the American Red Cross.Early results from the National Institutes for Health show the plasma can make a big difference for severely sick COVID-19 patients. And data from these new tests will help those researchers working to better understand the virus.The Red Cross says the need for whole blood donors is constant, but plasma is more unpredictable.Over the summer, plasma supplies ran low after unprecedented infections and demand in some states.Now, they're asking more donors to step up to restock for another potential surge in the fall and winter.“Because we can’t predict the demand, we want to ensure that we have enough inventory, because what really saves lives are the units that are on the shelf, not something that we need to collect once we realize there’s a need,” said Young.The Red Cross has taken additional safety steps during the pandemic. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Florida woman was shocked by an early-morning visitor that had made herself at home in her Christmas tree — a raccoon.Early Thursday morning, at about 4:15 a.m., Aubrey Iacobelli was woken up by her dog growling."I have a doggy door and my dog sleeps right in front of that dog door. I hear her going in and out all night. I wake up and I hear her barking outside," Iacobelli said.She asked her Amazon Alexa to turn on the lights, and saw her dog was staring at the Christmas tree and barking."I just knew that there was something there that shouldn't have been there. I see a furry body in the Christmas tree," she said.She grabbed a frying pan to try to get the animal — which she thought was a cat — out of her tree."I didn't want to hurt the animal. I just wanted it outside of the house," she said,That's when the raccoon finally came out of the tree and revealed itself. Iacobelli and her dog spotted the raccoon on the side of the tree and the dog jumped towards it, knocking over the tree.Warning: The video below contains some explicit language."The raccoon ran away from freedom. Target announced on Thursday that it is targeting diversity.In a press release, the retailer says they plan to increase its Black workforce by 20% in the next three years by "sharpening its focus on advancement, retention, and hiring."“The changes we’re making are going to have a meaningful impact on the careers of our Black team members and prospective team members,” said Kiera Fernandez, Vice President, Human Resources and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer in the press release. “A diverse and inclusive team at Target is one where there’s equity in how we promote, retain, and hire team members. Additional leadership development, training programs, and mentorship for our Black team members, along with a focus in areas of the business where our Black representation is not as strong, will offer new career development opportunities for our team for years to come. And we know the support we have for our team helps extend our reach outside our walls, creating a ripple effect that impacts our guests and communities.”The company says it plans to develop programs to hire and retain Black team members, increase its network of mentors and sponsors, and conduct anti-racist training for leaders and team members that'll "educate, build inclusion acumen, and foster a sense of belonging."The Minnesota-based company also released its latest diversity report.
