In states where it is legal, dispensaries are the go-to location for marijuana products. But now, more customers are using a marijuana home delivery service. Marijuana delivery is a growing business in California, with a company called Eaze dominating the marketplace. Its web page connects customers to dispensaries. Customers can choose from a variety of products, including flower, vape pens, body creams and more. Then, it gets delivered straight to the customer’s door. "A lot of times it gets there faster than a pizza," says Sheena Shiravis, Eaze’s director of consumer communications. Eaze's website looks like a typical online store. "You add things to your cart just like you would on Amazon,” Shiravi explains. “Anything like that. You check out, and then you get an ETA with when your driver is going to arrive." Eaze's software uses an algorithm to help dispensaries and drivers anticipate what customers will buy throughout a day. The product and drivers are tracked by GPS for security and safety. "There's little things like alerts that the driver has been sitting still or idle for 15 minutes, the dispatcher can instruct the retailer and will get an alert so they can call the driver,” Shiravi says. Delivery drivers must have clean driving records. They also have a host of safety procedures to follow. "The cars are not branded. The drivers don't wear cannabis clothing,” says Elissa Hambrecht, CEO of Fume, a dispensary. “There's nothing that says Eaze.com on it. It's literally a soccer mom car." There is some controversy in California and other states that are considering marijuana delivery. Some worry this will make increase crime. "We've seen shootings; we've seen homicides,” says Sgt. Scott Pendleton with the Colorado Police Department in Aurora. “A great deal of violent crime that surrounds marijuana." Sgt. Pendleton, who is a narcotics officer, worries about customers and drivers being sitting ducks for robbers. States that have a marijuana home delivery service include California, New York, Florida, Maine and Oregon. Other states are considering allowing the service, including Colorado and Washington. "You don't know what's going to take place, where there is going to be a rip off that's set up,” Sg. Pendleton says. It's hard to measure whether marijuana delivery has impacted crime where delivery is legal. However, Shiravi believes it’s helped cut down on black market sales. "Delivery helps eliminate the black market, because you are providing a legal channel for access," Shiravi says. In the heart of Silicon Valley, people are keeping a pulse on a new product, as techies transition to foodiesAt Vina Enoteca, a restaurant located a few blocks from Stanford University, staff serve up new plant-based proteins.“We had a spike on the pizza with Impossible Meat,” says owner Rocco Scordella.Scordella put products created by the company Impossible Foods on his menu a few years ago. Now, they account for 20 percent of his pizza sales.“I think it’s as close as it can get,” Scordella says. “That’s why I think when a lot of meat eaters taste it they’re like, ‘Oh, wow. This is close to real meat.'"That’s the idea behind Impossible Foods, one of the top plant-based protein companies in the country. The company gave us an all-access inside look at their lab, showing us the science of turning plants into meaty-tasting patties.“The Impossible Burger is made of actually just four really simple categories of ingredients,” Laura Kliman, Impossible Foods senior flavor scientist, says. “We have proteins, our nutrients which generate flavor; we have our binders and we have fat.” They also use the blood red liquid hemoglobin.“Heme is what makes meat taste like meat,” Kliman explains. “It’s an iron containing molecule that is found in every living plant and animal and is essential for life.”This food tech startup was founded by a Stanford University biochemistry professor and a team of scientists back in 2011. After studying meat at the molecular level, they launched Impossible Burger 2.0 in 2014 and the sales have skyrocketed“Since then, we have grown from about 5,000 restaurants in January 2019 to now more than 9,000 restaurants that are serving the Impossible Burger,” Rachel Konrad, Impossible Foods chief communications officer.Those restaurants include some of the biggest fast food franchises in the world.“Just in the past six weeks, you’ve seen Burger King and Little Caesars jump on this trend,” Konrad says. “They’re both rolling out the Impossible Burger and the Impossible Sausage."Impossible Foods hopes to increase that demand by launching in grocery stores later this year.With a starting price point on par with grassfed beef and going down from there.“If we want to make a product that is affordable for many, we need to be using ingredients that are really part of the food chain now,” says David Lipman, Impossible Foods chief science officer.Lipman claims his team’s plant-based foods are better for your health and the environment.“Animal-based agriculture has been possibly the most damaging thing we are doing to the planet,” he says. “We can get the ingredients we need just from the earth at a 20th the amount of space and land, much lower water usage. So, we want to cut out that middle man and make the use of animals and agriculture no longer needed.”Cattle rancher Joe Morris, however, disagrees with those claims. “First of all, they haven’t been around really to understand if that’s true or not,” he says. “Whereas actually beef has been around since people have been people.”Morris’ family’s business T.O. Cattle Company is one of California’s oldest beef companies, dating back to the Gold Rush era. He believes in tradition over technology.“The people that are doing plant-based proteins are doing it with good intentions,” he says. “But there’s a failure to understand the ecology of just ecology and they really don’t know much about agriculture.”Instead, Morris says whatever damage caused by animal agriculture has to be healed by holistic animal agriculture.“The animals are incredible creatures and they do amazing work," he says. "And the results of their work is biodiversity beauty water in the ground. The plant-based proteins, there’s no romance, there’s no beauty there.”When it comes to customers, however, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. “It’s good,” says a man who bought an Impossible Burger from Burger King. “I could hardly tell it wasn’t a regular beef patty.”This customer also tells us that he added bacon to his plant-based protein patty. 4039

  

It’s hard to regard Ellie as a menace.When Greg Manteufel is frustrated or feeling down, she sits by him. At night, she sleeps under his covers. At dinner, she’s there next to him, knowing he’ll throw something her way. She belies the stereotype of the vicious pit bull.“We love her like she’s our daughter,” he said of the dog.And yet, Ellie may be the reason Manteufel nearly died.Gravely ill, he lost parts of his arms and legs, as well as the skin of his nose and part of his upper lip. The cause was capnocytophaga (cap-noh-seye-TOE’-fah-gah), a germ from Ellie’s mouth or from another dog he encountered.Capnocytophaga is commonly found in the saliva of cats and dogs and almost never leads to people getting sick, unless the person has a compromised immune system. But Manteufel was perfectly healthy. In fact, he doesn’t think he’d ever used his health insurance before he fell ill.The case is extremely rare and doctors at his hospital, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, had no explanation for why he got so sick. But over the last 10 years there have been at least five other healthy people who have had severe reactions to the germ. A team of researchers connected with Harvard Medical School has developed a theory on why — a gene change in all the victims.And their finding means doctors can’t rule out the capnocytophaga bacteria could strike Manteufel and other victims again.___Greg Manteufel thought he was getting the flu in June of 2018. He had a fever, vomiting and diarrhea. But when he started getting confused, his family took him to the hospital.Doctors did blood cultures and found capnocytophaga, which caused sepsis, a severe blood infection that led to his blood pressure dropping and many of his organs shutting down.“Do what you have to,” he told the doctors.He had so much to live for — foremost, his wife of 16 years, Dawn, and 26-year-old son, Mike. He was just starting to get really good at his day job, painting houses. He cherished his Harley Davidson Electric Glide. He was in the middle of fixing up his ’66 El Camino. And of course there was Ellie, the pup.And so he persisted, through more than 20 surgeries, including amputations of his left and right arms just below the elbow, and legs through the middle of the knee.His wife and son stayed optimistic, because he was.“Greg said he didn’t come this far to lay down and let this beat him,” Dawn Manteufel said.He was out of the in-patient rehab unit in about two weeks, learning to move from his wheelchair to the bed, toilet and car. The usual stay is three to four weeks, said Dr. David Del Toro, medical director for the inpatient rehab unit at Froedtert.Manteufel made similar quick advances using his arm prosthetics and leg prosthetics.“He does not seem like any other patient I’ve met before,” Del Toro said. “He’s just, you know, full speed ahead.”Meanwhile, researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, connected to Harvard Medical School, as well as Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center had been investigating cases like his.The team has done genetic testing on five otherwise healthy people who suffered capnocytophaga infections to see if they could find anything in common. They discovered all had a gene connected to the immune system that was working differently — a genetic variant.“It was a really thrilling moment,” said Elizabeth Fieg, a genetic counselor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “The stakes are so high with these cases and the patients have gone through so much.”They believe it makes those people more susceptible to developing severe medical problems from capnocytophaga. But they are also trying to determine if there are other risk factors.Of the five in the study, three survived with amputations and two did not. Fieg hopes their research can determine why some did not survive.She also hopes if their theory is confirmed, it will help diagnose cases faster, and perhaps save lives and limbs.That’s why Greg Manteufel jumped at the chance to take part when he was approached in August.Researchers need to gather more evidence, but hope to publish their study in the next year to 18 months.___Manteufel’s life now includes frequent occupational therapy appointments to perfect his use of arm prosthetics — the kind with metal moveable hooks at the end. He’s using a fork regularly and he’s now working on picking up the TV remote, opening doorknobs, cutting vegetables and doing the dishes.He’s using shortened leg prosthetics, called stubbies, to get his body conditioned to eventually use to full-sized ones. Those are expected to arrive any day.Plastic surgeons plan another surgery to perfect his nose. They’ve already moved skin from his forehead there. It looks oversized now, but it will eventually fit in with the rest of his face.He plans to get his car revamped so he can drive with prosthetics. He wants to get a special pole so he can go fishing again. He is even considering going back to work painting.He’s also become less quiet and a lot more outgoing. “Now everybody I see wants to hear something or talk to me. I tell them a 15-minute story about what happened. They probably want me to leave, you know,” he said, chuckling.Ellie’s often by his side.“She loves kids. She loves puppies. Other dogs,” Manteufel said.As harmless as she seems, she may have capnocytophaga germ.The results of Manteufel’s genetic tests are expected in three to four months. Fieg said people with the gene variant are at increased risk for recurrent capnocytophaga or other infections in the future.While Manteufel doesn’t like the sound of that, he said Ellie’s accidentally scratched him since he’s been home and even licked his mouth. He’s been fine.And even if he does have the gene variant, he said, it changes nothing.“We didn’t even bother testing her,” said Manteufel. “We weren’t going to get rid of her if it was her that caused it anyway.”“We just love her to death.” 5972
