SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As more people are being hospitalized with COVID-19 across Southern California, some health care systems worry that lack of hospital staffing could become a big issue.“We’ve got to take care of our health care workers, or we’re not going to have them to take care of the patients,” said Meghan Jaremczuk, a registered nurse and the Director of Progressive and Acute Care at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.Like many health care workers this year, Jaremczuk hasn’t had a break. She’s been taking care of COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic.“Other people have been working from home, we're not, we're here, we're in it,” she said. “It’s been hard because this has been going on for a long time and people are tired, but they're still showing up. You're seeing people that can't be with their loved ones, visitors are very, very restricted. They can Facetime with their families and things like that, but it’s not the same.”The County of San Diego reported an additional 15 deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday and a 62 percent increase in the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients in a two week period.The Federal Medical Station set up at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido has 202 beds for non-ICU patients ready to go when needed, according to Palomar Health CEO Diane Hansen.Hansen said the health care system has the ability to expand the dedicated 48 ICU beds to 110 ICU beds if needed, but said making sure enough health care workers are available is one of the bigger issues at this point.“We do have capacity. We're seeing on average about 50 patients per day less than what we normally see this time of year,” said Hansen. “While we have capacity, my biggest concern is our ability to staff beds should the pandemic surge become greater.”“Staffing is a concern because not every nurse can take care of every kind of patient,” said Jaremczuk.Jaremczuk is most worried about the rapid rate of community spread. She said if nurses become sick, hospital operations could be disrupted.While she understands many people are tired of constantly being told to mask up, wash their hands and avoid gatherings, she’s urging everyone to continue to follow the health guidelines to protect those who are giving their all to save lives.“The patients also make an impact on our lives, we make connections and it's meaningful,” she said. “If we get exposed, if we get sick, we can't come to work and take care of patients.” 2459

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded to reports of a California Highway Patrol Officer who crashed his motorcycle in Rancho Bernardo Thursday evening. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened on northbound I-15 at Rancho Bernardo Road before 6 p.m. At this time, the cause of the crash is unknown. It’s also unknown whether or not the officer was injured in the crash. 416

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California health officials released new guidelines for indoor and outdoor youth sports, whether it is school-related, community sponsored, or club sports.The new guidance from the state’s Department of Public Health also applies to recreational adult sports.According to the state, inter-team competitions will not be allowed until Jan. 25, 2021, at the earliest. State officials will revisit this plan during the first week of January to see if any changes need to be made.Players and teams are allowed to practice, but health and safety measures -- such as social distancing -- must be in place.In the new guidelines, sports are categorized by indoor or outdoor, and then they are classified under three categories: low-contact, moderate-contact, and high-contact. The sports are then grouped based on risk tier.For San Diego County, which is in the state’s purple tier as of Dec. 15, only outdoor low-contact sports -- which includes golf, tennis, and swimming -- are allowed to compete.Once the county reaches the red tier, sports like baseball, softball, and cheerleading will be able to compete.Sports such as basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball would not be allowed to compete until San Diego County is in the state’s orange tier.The state’s new guidance comes months after children, parents, and coaches held rallies and voiced their frustrations about not being able to play.Because of the state’s rules, many teams -- specifically baseball and soccer -- have traveled to states like Arizona to play competitively because of less strict rules.Under California’s new guidance, teams can only compete against teams from the same county, and they cannot compete outside of the state.Click here to view the state's complete guidelines 1777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community members rallied Thursday to send a message to developers looking to build in Barrio Logan. This comes after a developer tried to bring an 80-room hotel to the area, but neighbors opposed it.Neighbors are worried the developers coming in would change the culture of the community. "I don't feel good at all. I think in the past, Barrio Logan has been assaulted and insulted," said resident David Heaney. "I'm afraid that they're going to go against the plan again, and there will be some kind of shenanigans where there the City Council will say it's done."Heaney has been living in his Barrio Logan home since 1998. It sits directly across from the proposed development site on Newton Avenue. Last summer, a developer wanted to put a hotel at the location, but due to opposition from the community, it will now be a mixed-use space. Community members say there is simply no room for a project like a hotel or other large businesses because of the lack of parking in the area. Neighbors must have parking permits to park in the area. 10News reached out to developer Douglas W. Hamm, who initially proposed putting a hotel in the space. He sent a statement that read, in part: "I conveyed that I have zero interest in trying to build a project in their neighborhood that the community is not supportive of, much less opposes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla, who last week announced he contracted coronavirus, has been hospitalized at UCSD Medical Center after experiencing difficulty breathing, his family announced Thursday.Ashleigh Padilla, Padilla's daughter, said her father "was admitted to UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU where he is receiving additional treatment, including a respirator to aid with difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19."“I know his amazing doctors and nurses are doing everything they can to send him home healthy when this is all over," said Ashleigh Padilla.No further details about his condition were given at this time, but Padilla did issue a warning to the public through his daughter.“My father asked me to pass on a message: Everyone needs to take COVID-19 seriously. Please follow the advice of our public health professionals to reduce spread of the virus and take precautions to keep your families and our community safe," said Ashleigh Padilla.Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, made the announcement in video last Saturday that was published on his Facebook page."After recently experiencing symptoms, I was diagnosed as being positive for the COVID-19 virus, also known as the coronavirus," he said last Saturday.Padilla appeared in the video to be in good spirits as he told viewers that he was doing "very well" and "feeling well."In a follow up statement later that night, he described having a fever, body aches, headaches, chills, that "came on very rapidly."
