SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after they say four teenagers were beaten, stabbed and robbed near a City Heights elementary school Saturday night.Police say the four teens were in a skate park near Cherokee Point Elementary School on the 3900 block of Landis Street when they were approached by a group of men.According to police, the man tried to start an argument, so then teens ran to a pedestrian bridge where another group of men was waiting for them.Police say the approximately 15 men punched and kicked all four victims and stole their cell phones and wallets. One of the victims was stabbed in the elbow and another was cut on the finger. One of the victims was taken to the hospital for his injuries, police say. The condition of the victims wasn’t specified.   806

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Wednesday, ABC10 News interviewed San Diego County Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne about this week's first criminal jury trial since all jury trials were halted in March.“We summoned 800 jurors and about 250 or so postponed their service like we told them to do if they felt uncomfortable or had a conflict or co-morbidity or something like that and of the remaining jurors we called in, only 41 showed,” she told ABC10 News and added, “The system doesn't work without jurors.” She went on to say, “I can only anecdotally think that people are unsure of public transportation or coming back Downtown to serve.”Wednesday marked the second day of the trial which was for an elder abuse case.Judge Alksne said that the courts have sufficient safety measures in place for jurors. “When they went back into the courtroom, they had these plexiglass barriers in between them if they're more than six feet apart and everyone wore masks and there was hand sanitizer everywhere. It's as safe as going to Costco,” she told ABC10 News. The courts have maintained that the only way to address the backlog of cases is with cooperation from San Diegans who are called for duty. She added, “What I [asked] the jurors yesterday was if you had a loved one who was incarcerated [and] pending trial and nobody showed up to do jury trial, how would they ever get their chance for their day in court?”Judge Alksne said that another trial is scheduled for next week and two are scheduled for the following week. The numbers of summonses will continue to increase. She explained that there's no plan to penalize people who do not appear for jury duty but that could change if turnout continues to be low. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Proposition 16 takes on the issue of affirmative action, which has been banned in California since the mid-1990s.Voters approved the ban on affirmative action in the form of Proposition 209 in 1996. It added a new section to the State Constitution which “generally banned the consideration of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, and public contracting in California,” according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office.Ahmad Mahmuod is a San Diego native and third-year student at UC Berkeley. He plans to become an attorney.“Growing up, I've never known a single black lawyer,” Mahmuod said. “Even coming to UC Berkeley, I've had challenges connecting with other black male lawyers.”He approves of Proposition 16.“You can’t be what you can’t see,” Mahmuod said. “I do see when companies and environments and campuses are more diverse and inclusive, that they thrive, and they end up doing better.”Legal analyst Dan Eaton examined the Yes on 16 ads airing on television.“Proposition 16 takes on discrimination. Some women make as little as 42 percent of what a man makes. Voting yes on Prop 16 helps us fix that,” according to the campaign ad.“The interesting thing about Prop 16 and this ad in particular, is it doesn’t talk about how it takes on discrimination,” Eaton said.Eaton adds that the source of the statistic on women in the ad is not given. The official ballot argument on the voter guide talks about “white women [making] 80 cents on the dollar” compared to men, but does not refer to any number less than that.According to a campaign spokesperson, the 42 percent figure refers to a statistic from the National Women’s Law Center about Latinas in California. The ad is paid for by a group called Opportunity for All Coalition. It said the Yes campaign is supported by leaders, like Senator Kamala Harris. In the 30 second advertisement, it also shows a group of men in a march carrying tiki torches, saying that Prop. 16 is “opposed by those who have always opposed equality.”The search of the video used showed the men carrying tiki torches is not from California, but from a white supremacist rally in 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia.“The implication… is that all of those who oppose Proposition 16 are racist or are women haters and that is certainly an opinion, but it is certainly not a verifiable fact,” Eaton said.Mahmuod said Prop. 16 would not establish racial quotas, which was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. 2520

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of San Diego's most recognized dive bars has been sold to two local cousins. The Aero Club's property was purchased, along with its neighboring property occupied by the t-shirt company Dyno Brand, for .4 million by cousins Chad Cline and Jason "Rocky" Nichols. The bar, formerly owned by Chinatown Bar & Grill's Bill Lutzius, will largely remain unchanged with its dive bar-style in tact, according to Cline. A sigh of relief to patrons after the possibility of moving the bar was floated last year.RELATED: Exploring San Diego: Aero Club, or 'that' bar by the airport"We had heard that the bar was in jeopardy for the past year, maybe a little bit longer. We figured if he moved it, it would get ruined," Cline said. "We don’t want to change anything, unless something breaks."And the two aren't walking in without experience. Between the pair, they have roles running Midway District's Banzai Bar, Little Italy's Waterfront Bar & Grill, Point Loma's Harbortown Pub and Club Marina, Lakeside's Eastbound Bar & Grill, La Mesa's The Hills, and the Gaslamp's Werewolf. The purchase itself was an easy price tag to swallow for Cline and Nichols. Cline said the two are dive bar fans and Aero Club held a special spot for them as they worked nearby at Waterfront."[Aero Club] was always kind of the spot that we felt was similar to what Waterfront was," Cline said. "We’re dive bar fans. All the spots that we’re associated with are kind of dive bars as well."And, of course, there's the Aero Clubs massive assortment of whiskey at the bar — which isn't going anywhere."I started liking it even more," Cline joked of when Aero Club started collecting hundreds of varieties of whiskey. He added if any changes were to come, the portfolio of whiskeys could expand."That's our goal with the whole thing is to continue it and not ruin it," he said. "‘I think what Aero Club is in not because of me or Rocky but because of Bill and previous owners."Dyno Brand is set to move from the neighboring property on April 1, Cline said. After that, he says they have yet to plan what will happen with the property. 2140

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Planned Parenthood officials say a recent act of vandalism at their Pacific Beach location will not "stop us from serving our patients."Red paint appeared to be thrown across the location's sign and windows on Mission Bay Drive sometime between late Sunday afternoon and Monday. A photo of crews cleaning the site was captured by a Reddit user and posted online here.In a statement to 10News, Planned Parenthood said the vandalism would not affect operations:"While we are disappointed by the recent vandalism to our health center, no attempt at intimidation will stop us from serving our patients. We've been a part of the fabric of this community for 55 years, and we'll be here for many more to come. Our patients can count on our doors to stay open, no matter what." 812
