CHANGSHA, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- A former Party discipline chief in a central China city was executed Thursday after being convicted of multiple counts of crime, said a local court.Zeng Jinchun, former secretary of the Chenzhou Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and vice secretary of the CPC Chenzhou Municipal Committee, was executed by shooting, said a statement from the Intermediate People's Court of Changsha City, capital of the central China's Hunan Province.Zeng was found guilty of taking more than 31 million yuan (about 4.7 million U.S. dollars) in bribes alone or along with others since the latter half of 1997 through to September 2006, said the court source.In return, he gave the bribers mine contracts and job promotions.Zeng had assets worth around 9.5 million yuan which he couldn't account for.He was sentenced to death by the Intermediate People's Court of Changsha City in November 2008 for accepting bribes and failing to account for his assets.The Hunan Provincial Higher People's Court rejected Zeng's appeal in July 2009. The Supreme People's Court had approved the death sentence handed down to Zeng, said the statement.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and EU leaders on Tuesday signed a first joint declaration on strengthening dialogue and cooperation on youth issues as the 2011 EU-China Year of Youth kicked off here.Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said at the opening ceremony that the year would open up new horizons for young people from Europe and China by enabling them to share experiences and learn from each other."I hope that such exchanges will inspire concrete ideas for cooperation and establish long-lasting partnerships," Vassiliou said.The opening ceremony was the first of a series of exchange activities to be held throughout the year in Europe and China. GABORONE, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping arrived in Gaborone on Saturday, kicking off his official visit to Botswana.Xi made the visit as a guest of Botswana's Vice President Mompati Merafhe who came to the airport to receive Xi.In his written speech, Xi said Botswana boasts beautiful scenery and has scored marked achievements in securing national unity and economic development.Xi said the China-Botswana relationship is very profound, noting that bilateral friendly cooperation ties have seen smooth and healthy expansion, which benefit the peoples from the two sides.Xi said his current visit is aimed to further consolidate traditional friendship between the two, increase mutual political trust and explore mutual cooperation."I'm looking forward to meeting leaders of Botswana and exchanging views with them on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern," he said.He also said he believed his visit would be a success.Botswana is the final leg of Xi's four-nation trip to Asia and Africa.In 1975, China and Botswana established the diplomatic relations.
