MOSCOW, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin discussed here on Saturday the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and the situation in Northeast Asia.     On the basis of mutual trust, the two sides exchanged in-depth views and reached consensus.     Both ministers agreed that the situation in Northeast Asia had become of major concern as escalating tensions there could trigger a new arms race, threatening regional security.     They said all parties concerned should remain calm and refrain from taking any actions that might further aggravate the situation. They said all relevant issues can be resolved through peaceful and diplomatic solutions such as negotiations, consultations and dialogue. The two countries will seriously carry out related resolutions of the United Nations (UN) in the hope that implementing them can help maintain peace and stability of the peninsula.     Both sides believed that the six-party talks was the only effective mechanism to resolve the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Only within the framework of the talks, can all parties find solutions to their security concerns, the ministers said.     They said China and Russia were ready to make efforts, along with other parties, to resume the six-party talks.     Wu arrived on Thursday in Moscow to discuss the Korean nuclear crisis. He will later visit the United States, Japan and South Korea.

URUMQI, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government and the Communist Party of China (CPC) will severely punish the outlaws in the Xinjiang riot, and restore normal social order in the region as soon as possible, senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang said here Thursday.     Authorities would take stability as their top priority at hand, and crack down hard on violence, in accordance with laws to protect the lives and property of people of all ethnic groups, and safeguard ethnic unity, said Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. ZHENGZHOU, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged economic restructuring to tap the growth potential as the nation copes with the impact of the global downturn.     Li made the call during a four-day tour ending Saturday in central China's Henan Province.     He said that with the concerted efforts nationwide, China's economy was turning for the better. He nevertheless warned of difficulties ahead citing the complicated world economy and called for confidence and more coping efforts.     Visiting local companies, Li urged the remolding and upgrading of traditional industries and the development of new sectors including new energy, environmental protection, new and high-tech and modern services.     Li's trip also highlighted the importance of agriculture and encouraged renovation and the development of modern agriculture. BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military authorities pledged Sunday to tighten supervision on senior and middle ranking officers, through strict punishment in cases of breach of duty and regular inspection of their work.     The military will adopt a strict system to investigate and punish senior officers for breaching duty or making mistakes, said a circular issued by the Central Military Commission (CMC) on Sunday.     The document, approved by CMC Chairman Hu Jintao, said it will also introduce a system of accountability by regular inspection on the work of officers at army corps level.     Military units higher than regiment level of the People's Liberation Army must review the work of their commanding officers at least once a year, it added.     Commanding officers from regiment to army corps levels are usually regarded as middle and senior ranking PLA officers.     It will tighten inspection on senior officers to see whether they strictly follow the military disciplines and show loyalty to the Communist Party of China.     The circular called on the officers to keep a communist nature. "In the face of a complicated ideological situation, senior military officers must stick to their faith and keep a firm political stance," it said.     They should devote themselves to building up the country's military capacity to win local wars in the information age, it said.     The document said that the supervision and inspection will focus on any examples of extravagance and waste by military officers.
