BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities rose slightly Friday after the release of strong May economic data but concerns over policy tightening and other uncertainties left market participants cautious.China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, increased in May by 3.1 percent from a year ago, the highest rate of increase since November 2008, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The NBS data showed that growth in factory production and investment continued to slow while retail sales, the main gauge of consumer spending, grew 18.7 percent in May year on year from 18.5 percent in April.Affected by slower industrial output growth and higher-than-expected CPI data, the Shanghai Composite Index initially rose but fell in the afternoon to close at 2,569.94 points, up 0.29 percent, or 7.36 points, from the previous close.The Shenzhen Component Index rose 17.11 points, or 0.17 percent, to end at 10,239.33.Total turnover shrank to 152.66 billion yuan (22.35 billion U.S. dollars) from 167.53 billion yuan the previous trading day.Losers outnumbered gainers by 488 to 359 in Shanghai and 572 to 368 in Shenzhen.Analysts believe the slower growth in industrial output was due to recent tightening measures and that the market has turned cautious as the May CPI figure outpaced the 3-percent ceiling the government has set for this year.Lu Ting, China economist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, said China's rising inflation may be interpreted negatively by markets.However, according to Yu Yang, an analyst at Galaxy Securities, the CPI is still "under control" and there is little possibility for a rate hike.Analysts also pointed out the decreased turnover volume reflected the fact some investors have taken a wait-and-see attitude ahead of next week's holidays.Chinese markets will be closed from Saturday to Wednesday for the traditional Dragon Boat Festival Holiday.Coal shares led the rise with a 1.8 percent gain as the May producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 7.1 percent year on year, outpacing the CPI growth.China Shenhua Energy Co., the country's biggest coal producer, climbed 0.78 percent to 23.35 yuan.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health has said it will draw upon its experience from the H1N1 flu control to ensure prevention of the general flu, as the World Health Organization (WHO) announced plans for the post-pandemic period."Based on the experience from A/H1N1 prevention and control, we will revise emergency plans and will continue flu prevention efforts in a bid to ensure people's health," said a statement released late Tuesday by the ministry.Figures from the ministry show that the weekly new A/H1N1 cases have remained below 30 since mid-April. Further, no deaths have been reported for 12 consecutive weeks.While announcing the coming of the post-pandemic period, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan warned that the A/H1N1 virus will continue to spread as a seasonal flu for some years.Chan urged health authorities to maintain alert for the virus.So far, about 800 deaths from A/H1N1 influenza had been reported in China, Health Minister Chen Zhu said earlier.More than 100 million Chinese have been vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu as of May 14.The A/H1N1 virus was first identified in Mexico in April 2009. BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Saturday cautioned against more rain-triggered disasters such as flood and mudslide during the rain season, and demanded for strengthened preventive measures.Currently most parts of the nation is experiencing the flood season when geological disasters becomes rampant, especially in the mountainous areas in the western region, Hui told a national meeting on geological disaster prevention on Saturday.He said authorities should keep a clear mind on the grim situations and step up efforts to prevent and fight the disaster with scientific methods.Massive mudslides hit northwestern China's Zhouqu County in Gansu Province on Aug. 8, with death toll rising to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, and 505 are still missing.On early Saturday, at least 38 people were missing after rain-triggered floods and landslides ravaged Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the epicenter of an 8.0 magnitude earthquake which left about 87,000 people dead or missing more than two years ago.Hui has called for all-out rescue efforts in Wenchuan County's mudslide. He asked local authorities to promptly evacuate residents, and speedily restore transport and telecommunication facilities in the area.The Vice Premier asked the local water, meteorological, and land authorities to closely monitor the situation and issue prompt forecasts and warnings on the floods and rain.Monitoring geological risks should be immediately launched in the towns, villages, and areas along roads and railway tracks, Hui said.Dangerous zones should be marked and people should be prevented from entering such risky areas.Hui said more work was needed to be done to ensure residents have food to eat and water to drink. Shelters and medical access should also be priorities for those affected.Further, the Vice Premier asked local officials to intensify hygiene work in order to prevent epidemics.

CHANGSHA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ten people have been confirmed dead after two manganese mines in central China's Hunan Province were flooded two weeks ago, local authorities said Monday.Water gushed into the two mine pits run by Leixin Mining Development Co. and Wenhua Manganese Co. in Huayuan County of Xiangxi Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture at about 6:10 p.m. on July 20, trapping a total of 13 miners underground.Rescuers pulled three miners alive out of the mines on July 29 and sent them to hospital. Currently, they are in stable condition, a spokesman with the Hunan Provincial Work Safety Administration said Monday.Rescuers had earlier retrieved seven bodies, and they found the last three bodies on Sunday morning, the spokesman said.Local authorities are further investigating the cause of the accident, he added.
