SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A new rule from the California Air Resources Board could wind up costing San Diego MTS hundreds of millions of dollars.CARB announced a series of regulations last week, all aimed at making bus fleets more environmentally friendly.One rule says all buses need to be zero-emission by 2040.That could be costly.Right now, SDMTS uses Compressed Natural Gas in their buses, which they say burns much cleaner than diesel fuel.Those buses cost 7,000 each, and MTS buys about 50 new buses each year.New electric, zero-emission buses will cost about 2,000 each.Replacing the entire fleet with electric buses will cost 7.5 million more than CNG buses."The technology is relatively new, the costs are high right now," says MTS Spokesperson Rob Schupp. "I think CARB is looking into the future. As we encourage more and more manufacturers to build these buses, the costs will come down."San Diego MTS is already putting six electric buses in their fleet this summer as part of a pilot program.They'll use those to test how the electric buses operate across several terrains and distances in San Diego.They also received a grant to help buy 11 more for a South Bay Bus Rapid Transit line that will open in 3 years.Beyond that, MTS says they may use a combination of state funding, grants and possibly rate increases to pay for the new electric buses.Schupp says the state has plans to chip in about 0,000 per bus.The cost of new buses isn't the only concern about going electric.MTS says they need to look into how much electricity will cost compared to natural gas.They also may need to build and install charging stations around town, because the buses may not be able to go as far as they would using gas.Despite all that, Schupp says the MTS Board fully supports the change. 1812

"So I think this will be a great play station for my baby,” she said while pointing at a piano toy.Patin said this year, she and her husband are buying their son’s holiday toys at a big box store.“Sam’s Club is majorly for groceries, buying bulk. But now as they are increasing their toy collection, I think for parents, it’s a good thing," Patin said. In fact, her one-year-old son Viann’s entire nursery came out of a Toys R Us catalog. But since the toy giant filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, she had to look elsewhere.Since 1948, Toys R Us has dominated the toy market-- last year claiming almost 5% of the .4 billion industry. Now that they are gone, retailers like Sam's Club saw an opportunity.“We have added about 70 new toys this holiday season," Sam's Club member experience manager, Victor Aguilar said. “We have way more toys than before, that way [parents are] not running around everywhere trying to get their toys. So they can do a one-stop-shop here, buy their food, clothes, toys. They get everything.”Like their “try then buy” food model, Sam's Club is offering toy demonstrations for the first time, ever."We want kids to interact with them, and ask Santa for that gift," Aguilar said. "Or so parents can make sure if the product meets their children's needs."Demonstrations are a strategy to beat out online stores, which now amount to 13% of the holiday retail market.Small, independent toy stores, on the other hand, have another strategy. Instead of offering the same toys as everyone else, she seeks specialty items.“We always try to have some niche stuff that Toys R Us doesn’t have or a bigger toy store, so it didn’t really affect us," Sasaki said. SAN DIEGO, California — The Christ United Methodist Church's Safe Harbors Network needs help to prepare for the next wave of migrants approaching the US-Mexico border.The network, started in 2016, provides basic necessities for refugees, such as a bed, shower, food, clothes, medical care and legal aid, until their court date."They don't have anything, they have the clothes they're wearing, they don't have phones, they don't have money, they would be homeless, so we take them in," Volunteer Kathryn LaPointe said.In 2016 the majority of their refugees were Haitian, over the past several months they're mostly women and children from Central America."We're taking in between 20 and 30 a night the past few days, most of them were able to send to their families, but I would like to help more people," LaPointe said.Sunday, LaPointe said they're at capacity and need all the help they can get. "Every person that walks in front of me, I ask for a building," she said laughing, "can you please get me a building."The network is comprised of individuals, congregations and organizations who care for refugees. "[Provide] basic human kindness, and," LaPointe said as she sighed heavily, "I am so grateful to be able to do that to extend that kindness and I would like to extend that kindness to more people." 1351
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is celebrating 65 years of their Leadership AKAdemy. The program mentors a group of teenage girls every year. The AKAdemy ends with a memorable ball. The AKA San Diego chapter has one mission: encourage scholastic achievement, strong ethical standards, and "be a service to all mankind." For over six decades, those values have been used to mentor girls around the county. During the 1950s, the chapter held its first debutante ball to expose young girls to cultural opportunities. It was historically the debut of young ladies ages 16 to 19 as official members of society. "Now it has grown into a leadership academy to where we equip the young people with life skills," says Chapter President, Deborah Davis-Gillespie. The teens attend different workshops, like college readiness and etiquette, each week for the months' long program. This year's Leadership AKAdemy has a total of 16 girls. "I'm just really happy to be a part of the whole process and the whole experience," says participant Kennedy Harris. Community service is also at the top of the list for the program. The girls participate in community events like the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and the MLK Day of Service in Balboa Park. The goal is to help others and for the girls to have an appreciation for the communities in which they live. "It's really nice to be able to make those connections early on in my life," says participant Sanai Mitchell. After months of workshops, events, and dance practice with their escorts for the ball, the girls are now just a few weeks away from their big night. They will be presented to their families and community as young women, ready to take on the world. "It's an evolution, its life-changing and they walk away a better person than when they came in," says Davis- Gillespie.This year's AKA Leadership AKAdemy will be held on Saturday, March 21st at the Legacy Hotel and Resort in Mission Valley. 2000
