SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to accelerate hiring and training of more border officer, National Guard members were deployed Tuesday to ports of entry along San Diego County's border with Mexico. In total, 24 National Guard troops joined Customs and Border Protection personnel at Port of San Diego, and ports of entry in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Tecate, and Calexico. They will not be taking part in any enforcement activities, according to CBP, instead, helping in surveillance support and operations. The deployed troops will not be armed.RELATED: Border Patrol officials discuss National Guard deployment to US-Mexico borderUp to 106 additional National Guard troops may be sent to the ports of entry in the coming weeks, CBP added."The contribution of the National Guard will undoubtedly improve our effectiveness at the ports of entry by enabling those officers to focus on enforcement activities," Pete Flores, CBP Director of field operations for San Diego, said. "We look forward to working collaboratively to further our national security mission."CBP says the additional troops will allow border personnel to focus on securing areas of the border against drug, weapons, and human smuggling. 1247

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It wasn't the opening day anyone envisioned, but by game time, foot traffic had picked up around Petco Park.It was vastly different compared to past years, according to Brant Crenshaw. He owns Social Tap San Diego, located next to the ballpark. Due to public health orders, the capacity at their restaurant was significantly reduced. However, they were able to fill the tables and chairs set up in their outdoor areas, and by the start of the game, they had a healthy waitlist.Crenshaw says despite the pandemic, Opening Day still brought more people out than usual."This is baseball. We're Americans. They go hand in hand," he said. It's definitely special and were playing the hand we're dealt."Meanwhile, there were many fans spotted decked out in game-day gear trying to catch a glimpse of the game from their balconies near the ballpark. Some fans waved Padres flags from the balcony to show support.Chip Messenger kept opening day tradition going by watching from his balcony. He has a great view of the field and has invited a small group of people to watch the game from the outdoor vantage point. He plans to share the spot with other people as the season goes on."I run a tight ship on opening day, this is my 8th or 9th opening day from my balcony," Messenger said. "So you invite people you can't have too many, but I want to start inviting people I don't know in a few days. There's going to be like some babies for the time, moms and dads, couples you know. I'll make it fun."Messenger says he usually leaves his balcony party to go to his seats at the ballpark, this year is different. But he is just happy to have baseball back after the season was delayed and shortened."It's about time," he said. 1741

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's not the most family-friendly event in town, but it is one of San Diego's most time-honored bashes. The 66th Over-The-Line (OTL) World Championship returns to Fiesta Island Park for two weekends July 13 and 14, and July 20 and 21. The annual event, known for its color team names and characters, started locally in the 1950s and has since become a highlight of summertime in San Diego. What more can you ask for during the sweltering heat? Sunshine, brews, and a simple sport that everyone can follow. Well, it may not be that simple for newbies, but it's a quick lesson.RELATED: Ocean Beach summer tradition returns as 'David Buoy' is deployedHere's what to know:The batter and pitcher are on the same team. The batter's goal is to hit the ball into fair territory (over the line) without a fielder catching it. A hit includes any ball that lands in fair territory, if a fielder crosses over the line, or if a fielder drops the ball in fair or foul territory. If a batter connects with the ball but it does not cross the line, it can be saved and ruled a "no pitch" if the batter or pitcher are able to catch the ball before it hits the ground. Kind of like a redo pitch. An out is recorded when the ball fails to cross the line, a batter swings and misses, a fielder catches the ball in fair territory, a batter has two fouls, a player bats out of order, or if a pitcher or batter touch but do not catch a ball that falls short of the line.Nobody actually runs bases — at times, that's probably for the best — and three outs end each half of an inning just like baseball. To score:The third hit of a half-inning scores one run and each hit after that scores another run.A home run, which is when a ball lands past the last fielder without it being touched, scores a run and any hits before it. The hit count is then reset to zero.Anyone is free to spectate, but the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) has a few guidelines. Participants and fans follow the "No Bs" of OTL, which include no bottles, no bowzers (dogs), no babies, and no battles (fighting.) RELATED: San Diego Airbnb experience transforms clients into mermaidsWhile the event is free, organizers warn that OTL is not the most appropriate and safe event for children due to crowds, language, booze, and the open sports setting. Before heading out, check traffic and weather conditions around the Mission Bay area. For more information on team registration, tickets, and parking visit the OMBAC website. 2497

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's a new twist on Black Friday shopping. Customers are flocking to buy ammunition before a new California gun law goes into effect. It’s called the “1 million round month.” Just a few hours after opening its doors, Poway Weapons and Gear Range sold half of their 1.2 million rounds of ammo. “Today is a direct reflection of the law,” says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. “People are trying to stock up and save up now that way they don’t have to worry about it next year.” The new law starting in July says in addition to a gun permit, gun owners will have to pass another background check to buy ammunition. Retailers will then have to log the amount of ammo gun owners purchase in a database. The records will be sent to the Department of Justice. When asked about the store’s large sale, Ron Marcus with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said in part: “The bottom line is regardless of how people try to prepare themselves before the law goes into effect, majority of Californians voted on Prop. 63 that put these laws into effect."Store owners say they will order more ammunition for customers to purchase at a reduced price. The “1 million round month” sale will end December 31st.  1292

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In just a few weeks, voters will decide the fate of the San Diego Chargers' former home, now known as SDCCU Stadium. In a recent 10News/Union-Tribune poll, Measure G, known as SDSU West, is the clear front-runner.With the clock winding down, backers of both Soccer City and SDSU West are blanketing the airwaves in hopes of winning over voters.10News analyzed two advertisements currently airing on our station and put their messages to the test, separating fact from fiction. The first ad we looked at deals with Measure E, better known as Soccer City. The ad features soccer star Landon Donovan asking two people if they want to see the future. After showing one of them a video of the design planned for the location, one of the people asks Donovan how much it will cost for what he saw. Donovan says, "It won't cost you a dime."10News analyzed that statement and found it to be in a grey area.According to a San Diego City Attorney analysis, a private developer would normally pay the city for staff time spent processing its development. It’s unclear whether any city staff time will be reimbursed. Also, the City Attorney analysis noted the initiative does not establish the actual amount of rent the city would be paid for a 99-year lease of the property. The ad goes on to claim taxpayers get the same stadium that's currently there for the next ten years and it's going to cost six million dollars a year. Team 10 can’t verify timing but according to the City Attorney analysis, Measure G provides for the sale of approximately 132 acres. The measure doesn't talk about time frames and does not guarantee that the property would be sold or that any specific development would be built.Team 10 also read through the City of San Diego Office of the Independent Budget about stadium costs. The report says the stadium historically operated at a deficit.Officials with Soccer City disagreed with some points of our analysis saying the initiative pays fair market value. They also pointed to provisions in the ballot language saying it shows city costs will be covered.Team 10 also took a look at a Measure G ad starring former San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. The ad starts with Sanders saying “Voters have a big decision in November. The choice is clear, SDSU West, Measure G on the ballot is a once in a lifetime chance to grow the university to meet the needs of future students.”The ad says Measure G will create a western campus for SDSU with a research center, a beautiful public park along the restored San Diego river, affordable housing and a home for SDSU football and soccer.A 10News analysis found those statements to also be in a grey area. All of that could happen, but the city attorney's analysis says voter approval of this measure does not guarantee that the property would be sold or that any specific development would be built. It goes on to say if the property is sold to SDSU, the Board of Trustees of the California State University will determine the use of the property in its sole discretion - through a Campus Master Plan revision process. A Campus Master Plan revision does not require City approval. The review also notes the initiative does not address who would plan, build and maintain the river park.An official with Measure G sent 10News a statement saying: 3334
