CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - The commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force today relieved from duty the commander of a landing team involved in a training accident that killed nine young servicemen in the ocean near San Clemente Island last summer, the Marine Corps announced. USMC Lt. Gen. Karsten Heckl removed Lt. Col. Michael Regner from his post as commanding officer of Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit ``due to a loss in trust and confidence in his ability to command'' following the sinking of an assault amphibious vehicle about 80 miles west of Encinitas.``Although the command investigation (into the accident) has compiled a substantial amount of information and data which formed the basis for Heckl's decision, it is still ongoing as the Marine Corps continues to investigate, assess all relevant information and take appropriate actions,'' I MEF public affairs advised in a prepared statement. The amphibious troop-transport vehicle carrying the Camp Pendleton- based personnel -- seven Marines and a Navy sailor, ranging in age from 18 to 22 -- foundered for unknown reasons about 5:45 p.m. July 30 during a maritime training mission and went down in water nearly 400 feet deep. Seven other members of the crew survived. The naval Undersea Rescue Command recovered the victims' remains from the sea floor eight days later. The Marine Corps has not released an official determination of the cause of the accident. 1485

CALEXICO, Calif. -- High school seniors around the country are coping with missed milestones like prom and walking across the graduation stage. "Our students invested 12, 13 years in their education, so we must invest in something to give them back, a ceremony they can be proud of," said John Moreno, principal of Aurora High Continuation in Calexico, California. Several of the students graduating will be the first in their families to get a diploma. Students come to the continuation school for a fresh start; many were at risk of not graduating. "It's a very big deal, many of them have not received any accolades, or any awards or any kind of recognition, any kind of victory. So when we see them with this victory, this is a big one," said Moreno. When graduation was canceled due to COVID-19, students and their families were devastated. So the district wanted to do something special, enlisting help from VEGO Pictures to create a virtual graduation. The Hollywood production company changed its business model seemingly overnight to create virtual graduations for schools around the country. The move also helped employ Hollywood producers and directors out of work due to the pandemic. With guidance from a VEGO Pictures producer, schools tape various clips they'd like to include in the virtual ceremony, and then the production company handles the rest. Customized for each school, the ceremony is a tribute to student's talents and achievements from the last four years. Anyone around the world can tune in to the virtual ceremony."I think it's pretty cool!" said Lorenzo Lopez, an Aurora High graduate. "Since it's going to be recorded and not in person, I can save it and watch it another time and show it to my kids and my grandkids."While disappointed they couldn't have a traditional ceremony, students say they're grateful to at least have this memory. 1879

CARLSBAD, Calif. Police are asking residents to check their cameras if they have any for images of Arias.Police say the first incident happened in the 6500 block of Paseo Frontera at about 12:30 a.m., though the victim didn't report it until about 1:30 a.m. Police say while inside, Arias reportedly touched the male resident while he was sleeping and woke him up. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The dollar value racked up by the Apple store bandits is now climbing toward the million-dollar mark.Surveillance images from an Apple store in Carlsbad in May show a group of men in hoodies walking in and immediately getting to work."They quickly grab the products on display near the front of the store," said Mark Herrring, coordinator of the San Diego County Crime Stoppers program.Investigators believe the same men hit the same store in June and several times in July."They flee the store, usually to a vehicle that is waiting for them," said Herring. The thieves have apparently shopped around for local targets.  Authorities released more images from a similar case at an Apple store at Westfield North County on July 9.  Detectives believe the local cases are linked to other grab-and-runs from across the state this year."Currently there are  approximately 30 cases throughout the state. The merchandise is valued at about 0,000."In some cases, people have gotten hurt. In a theft in Costa Mesa, the thieves punched and kicked an off-duty police officer trying to stop them before they ran off. Sources tell 10News the thieves hit three stores last Friday night, including one in Temecula.    "Most likely an arrest in this case is the only way this stops," said Herring. In one of the cases outside San Diego County, witnesses saw the men take off in a silver Infiniti sedan.  If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1548
