Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has declared a state of emergency in Charlottesville this weekend as the city braces for demonstrations on the one-year anniversary of deadly white supremacist rallies.While the group who organized last year's "Unite The Right" rally will be marching in Washington, DC this weekend, the city of Charlottesville is bracing for large crowds according to the city website.Violence broke out at the first "Unite The Right" on Aug. 11 and 12 last year in Charlottesville as white supremacists and counter-protests clashed. One counter-protester was killed when a white nationalist rammed his car into a crowd. Nineteen others were injured.Two state troopers later died in a helicopter crash near Charlottesville.More on this as it develops.  782

VISTA, Calif. – A Carlsbad pastor whose wife caught him molesting a female family member was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday afternoon. Matthew Tague stood in Superior Court in Vista to read a statement of apology; taking 100 per cent responsibility for hurting those closest to him and saying he's getting counseling for his sex addiction."For all these things, I am and will be truly and profoundly repentant and in light of my terrible and reprehensible actions. I would like to share why I'm grateful that I was discovered on May 5, 2017."His wife stood then, talking about rehabilitation and forgiveness. "This sentence my husband faces, we all know is indeed lifelong; no matter what number of years is decided, these events will follow him for the rest of his life."Deputy district attorney Patricia Lavermicocca hammered on Tague's role in the community, as pastor of North Coast Calvary Chapel. "This isn't just a father; he is a pastor who teaches the community the morally right thing to do."Judge Daniel Goldstein noted Tague's selfishness and aggression, calling his acts outrageous and heinous. WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials warned parents Wednesday about the dangers of teething remedies that contain a popular numbing ingredient and asked manufacturers to stop selling their products intended for babies and toddlers.The Food and Drug Administration said that various gels and creams containing the drug benzocaine can cause rare but deadly side effects in children, especially those 2 years and younger.The agency has been warning about the products for a decade but said reports of illnesses and deaths have continued. Now, it wants teething products off the market, noting there is little evidence they actually work."We urge parents, caregivers and retailers who sell them to heed our warnings and not use over-the-counter products containing benzocaine for teething pain," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, in a statement.One major manufacturer, Church and Dwight Co. Inc., said Wednesday it would discontinue its four Orajel teething brands, including Baby Orajel and Orajel Medicated Teething Swabs.The FDA said it will take legal action against other companies that don't voluntarily comply as soon as possible.Benzocaine is also used in popular over-the-counter products for toothaches and cold sores in adults, including Orajel and Anbesol and generic drugstore brands. Products for adults can remain on the market but the FDA wants companies to add new warnings. Church and Dwight will continue to sell its other Orajel products, the company said in a statement.Benzocaine can cause a rare blood condition linked to potentially deadly breathing problems. The pain-relieving ingredient can interfere with an oxygen-carrying protein in the blood. Symptoms include shortness of breath, headache and rapid heart rate.The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend teething creams because they usually wash out of the baby's mouth within minutes. Instead, the group recommends giving babies teething rings or simply massaging their gums to relieve pain.The FDA issued warnings about the teething products in 2006, 2011 and 2014, but it did not call for their removal from the market. Officials reviewed 119 cases of the blood disorder linked to benzocaine between 2009 and 2017, including four deaths, according to the FDA.Wednesday's action comes more than four years after the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to stop sales of teething products. The agency faced a deadline next week after Public Citizen sued the FDA to force a response to the petition. 2526

Virginia voters elected the nation's first openly transgender candidate to the Virginia House of Delegates on Tuesday.Danica Roem unseated incumbent delegate Bob Marshall, who had been elected thirteen times over 26 years, according to Marshall's website.As of 9:07 p.m. ET, Democratic candidate Roem had 54.59% of the votes to Marshall's 45.36%, with 19 of 20 precincts reporting, according to the Virginia Department of Elections."Tonight, voters chose a smart, solutions-oriented trans leader over a divisive anti-LGBTQ demagogue -- sending a powerful message to anti-trans legislators all across the nation," said Aisha C. Warning: Video attached is disturbingLAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana State Police are investigating after a Black man was shot and killed by officers in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Friday.State police say shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, the Lafayette Police Department responded to a disturbance involving a person armed with a knife at a convenience store. Officers encountered 31-year-old Trayford Pellerin of Lafayette in the parking lot of the convenience store on NE Evangeline Thruway. As officers tried to apprehend Pellerin, troopers say he fled the scene and a foot pursuit ensued. Officers deployed Tasers as they pursued Pellerin, but they were ineffective.Pellerin, who was still armed with a knife, attempted to enter an occupied convenience store along the NW Evangeline Thruway. Officers discharged their weapons and Pellerin was struck by gunfire.Pellerin was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured.The officers have been placed on administrative leave, according to the spokesperson for the Lafayette Police Department.The investigation is active and ongoing. Investigators with the state police will be reviewing body cam video from Lafayette police.Video being widely shared on Facebook shows a man with what witnesses said was a knife in his hand walking away from police toward a convenience store.
