MIDDLEVILLE, Mich. - With houses side-by-side on Briggs Road in Middleville, Austin McKian and Erand Smith describe themselves as typical neighbors.“I’ll be out doing yard work and stuff and he’ll just come over and he’ll just help,” said Smith.They try to help each other out whenever they can, doing yard work, cleaning gutters, or shoveling snow.“I love helping people,” said McKian. “If I can help anyone when the time is there, I’ll try to do it.”Their latest act of service though is taking it a step forward.“We just took a bad situation and made it into something good, something funny,” said McKian.Smith, a sculptor, created a one-of-a-kind, monster-esque prosthetic cover for McKian.“An alien, bug type thing is what I went for,” said Smith.After complications from an ankle injury in 2018, doctors decided a below-the-knee amputation would be the best option for McKian to ease his pain, but within a few months of that surgery, he faced another obstacle.McKian is one of the 27.5 million Americans uninsured and he cannot afford a new, properly-fitted socket, which is making his recovery difficult.“Phantom pains, neurological issues, blood flow issues, right now my stump is getting very cold to the touch,” said McKian.McKian plans to apply for coverage next year, but while he waits for that, Smith decided the prosthetic cover would be a unique way to deal in the meantime.“We took a tracing of his leg basically, and just made a cardboard cut out of the shape and then I laid that out, flat sculpted it all, then took a mold of it, and then cast it with that material,” said Smith.Smith finished it this month.“I felt like I was 12 again,” said McKian. “I loved it. It made me laugh instantly, I was like this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A man was arrested Sunday after allegedly saying on Facebook live that he would shoot Louisville police officers for ,000.The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky said Sunday that 29-year-old Cortez Lamont Edwards was in possession of an AR variant pistol including a non-extendible support brace and extended magazine when he went live last Wednesday.In the video, Edwards says he’s requesting to be paid ,000 to shoot the officer on scene for a disturbance in the street in front of his home, according to a criminal complaint.Authorities say an investigation revealed that the Louisville man is a convicted felon, having been convicted of complicity to trafficking in a controlled substance, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.Edwards was taken into custody Sunday after a team of law enforcement agencies executed a search warrant at his home. He’s being charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.If convicted at trial, the maximum sentence for unlawfully possessing a firearm is 10 years in prison, a 0,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.Louisville has become a site of unrest this year, with people calling for justice in the Breonna Taylor case. LUTZ, Fla. — A Florida mother was arrested after her 3-year-old daughter drowned in a Lutz pool.According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, on March 10 at 9:45 p.m., 30-year-old Caitlin Joy Powell arrived at her job at JT's Road House bar in Tampa. At the beginning of her shift, she allegedly took a 15mg pill of morphine prescribed to her by a doctor. At about midnight she took another half pill in the same shift.Powell also reportedly drank four to five shots of Bailey's Irish Cream and butterscotch liqueur during her shift. Deputies say she left work at about 2:40 a.m. and drove to her friend's house to pick up her daughter. They drove to her home in Lutz where she put her daughter in bed and went to sleep.HCSO says that Powell woke up twice that morning to use the bathroom and change the child's diapers. At about 12:30 p.m. the next day, Powell was awoken by a witness who said the child was in the backyard pool. The toddler was transported to the hospital, but later died.Detectives noted the pool was heavily ridden with green algae and the visibility into the pool was barely past the first step. They say the woman knew the sliding glass doors leading to the backyard did not properly lock and the safety pin that binds both doors together was missing for approximately one to two weeks. The bar she allegedly placed to secure the door was located in the backyard under a shovel.A fence was created in front of the pool, but there was about a one foot gap next to the wall blocked by a small metal cage and a plastic pet carrier, both light in weight.Investigation revealed the 3-year-old walked around the pool, fell in and drowned.Powell says the child was unsupervised for about four and a half hours.On May 8, Powell turned herself in and was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child. She was later released on bond. 1886
