Nearly 1-in-5 new coronavirus cases in the U.S. are among people in their 20s, according to CDC’s data. Those between the ages of 20 and 29 years old have been the largest age group of COVID-19 patients for most of the summer. This age group made up about 15 percent of positive cases in May, then grew to 20 percent in June, 23 percent in July and 21 percent of positive cases in August. In May, COVID-19 patients were more evenly split between 20 to 59 years old, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the summer progressed, however, other age groups stayed steady or declined as the 20-to-29 age group more than doubled between May and July.“Younger adults make up a large proportion of workers in frontline occupations (e.g., retail stores, public transit, child care, and social services) and highly exposed industries (e.g., restaurants/bars, entertainment, and personal services), where consistent implementation of prevention strategies might be difficult or not possible. In addition, younger adults might also be less likely to follow community mitigation strategies, such as social distancing and avoiding group gatherings,” CDC researchers wrote. They also said younger adults are more likely to have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, and could unknowingly transmit the coronavirus to others. The increase in cases among children and young adults between 10 and 19 is also sharp. In May, this age group made up 5 percent of total positive COVID-19 cases. They increased to 7 percent of cases in June, 10 percent in July and more than 11 percent of positive cases in August. The increase in younger patients has decreased the average age of COVID-19 patients in the U.S. from 46 years old in May to 38 years old in August.“Infection is not benign in younger adults, especially among those with underlying medical conditions, who are at risk for hospitalization, severe illness, and death,” the CDC states.Younger children, from infants to 9-year-olds, remained 2-4 percent of total positive COVID-19 cases from May to August.“Given the role of asymptomatic and presymptomatic transmission, strict adherence to community mitigation strategies and personal preventive behaviors by younger adults is needed to help reduce their risk for infection and subsequent transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to persons at higher risk for severe illness,” the CDC report concluded. This week, the U.S. topped 200,000 deaths from COVID-19. This is more deaths than any other country from the coronavirus. 2532

MLB and the league’s player union held negotiations this week, days after a contentious series of statements between the league and union indicated the 2020 season is in peril. The league and players are working on a plan to begin the 2020 season after it was postponed by the spread of the coronavirus. With most professional sports leagues coming back this summer, MLB has yet to formalize a plan for resumption.MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that a new set of proposals have been forwarded to the players. The tone from Manfred on Wednesday differed from earlier in the week.“We left that meeting with a jointly developed framework that we agreed could form the basis of an agreement and subject to conversations with our respective constituents,” Manfred said. “I summarized that framework numerous times in the meeting and sent Tony a written summary today. Consistent with our conversations yesterday, I am encouraging the Clubs to move forward and I trust Tony is doing the same.”Earlier on Wednesday, reports surfaced that the league and players have finalized a deal, but those reports appeared to be premature as the MLBPA said that no agreement has been made.At odds is the number of games to be played, and whether players will be paid a full prorated amount for those games. MLB said that based on an agreement between the leagues and players days after the league suspended Spring Training, players would only be paid a full prorated salary if games were held in front of fans. As of now, the likelihood of MLB games being played in front of fans this season appears to be low.The players union has complained that the league is attempting to play the fewest number of games possible.“The commissioner has repeatedly threatened to schedule a dramatically shortened season unless players agree to hundreds of millions in further concessions,” the MLBPA said on June 13. “Our response has been consistent that such concessions are unwarranted, would be fundamentally unfair to players, and that our sport deserves the fullest 2020 season possible.” 2069

NATIONAL CITY (CNS) - A black BMW spun out and went off southbound Interstate 5 Saturday, with the vehicle catching fire and the driver seen lying on the ground not far away. There was no immediate word on the condition of the driver, but the medical examiner's office was called to the scene, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.Witnesses told officers the motorist was driving recklessly before the crash, the CHP said. The crash caused traffic to back up on southbound I-5. 500

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - The National City City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday night to introduce a new ordinance that aims to close a loophole in a state law that prohibits the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbits.Enacted on January 1, 2019, the new state law prohibits stores from selling animals unless they come from shelters or non-profit rescues. However, some pet stores have continued to sell what appear to be purebred and designer mix puppies that come from a small group of newly formed rescue organizations. One of those groups is called Bark Adoptions, based in Menifee. A 10News investigation found Bark Adoptions had been importing puppies from another supposed rescue in Iowa that had ties to commercial breeders. At National City Puppies, one of the two remaining pet stores in the city, signs on the dog cages in May showed they came from Bark Adoptions. The manager of National City Puppies, David Salinas, said he did not know where the dogs at his store came from beyond the listed rescues. But he defended his store in front of the city council, saying it comes down to consumer choice.“It’s the American way to have the freedom to choose where to buy a puppy,” said Salinas. As written now, the new ordinance says “a pet shop or retail pet store or its operator shall not sell, deliver, offer for sale, barter, auction or otherwise dispose of a cat, dog or rabbit.”There are exceptions, however, that would allow pet stores to offer “a cat, dog or rabbit owned by an animal shelter or animal rescue organization for purposes of adoption” but only if “the pet shop does not receive any fee from the adoption and does not have any monetary or ownership interest” in the animals. The ordinance still has to come back to the city council for a second reading and adoption before it goes into effect. 1835

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN — A Milwaukee mother is livid that her 5-year-old son with autism was able to walk away from school. He was gone for about an hour and no one even knew he was missing until a stranger picked him up in a car."I can't believe my baby was out of the street and nobody had any idea that he was even missing," said the boy's mom Crystal Borzick. Her son, Blake Greenley, made it to the middle of busy Mill Road near 87th when a stranger spotted him trying to cross."His face was red," said Karen Stacy. "He was very cold. He was crying."Stacy said several cars slammed on their brakes when the boy darted across Mill Road to the median around 11 o'clock Thursday morning. She stopped and got out to try to find out what was wrong.Greenley has autism and does not usually speak to strangers. Stacy finally got him in her car and called the police. She was shocked to find no one reported him missing so she posted his picture on Facebook while she waited for officers.A friend of Borzick shared it with her on Facebook."That's the picture I got sent," said Crystal Borzick. "And as a mom, that made my stomach sink."She frantically called his school, Bruce Elementary."Nobody even has an idea that my son is missing from the school," said Borzick.Officers brought him back. When Crystal saw him she said she broke down."I cried," said Borzick. "I cried. I hugged him like I have never hugged him before. It was a relief sigh of relief, but it's also like I can't believe my baby was out of the street."She said she was told by the school her son might have left after lunch and that his regular teacher was out and a substitute was teaching.Milwaukee Public Schools gave a statement on the matter."We are grateful Blake was quickly found by a concerned community member and that he is safe. We are investigating this incident and, therefore, cannot comment further," said Andy Nelson, media manager for Milwaukee Public Schools."I have never been so scared in my life to know that anything could have happened to my child and nobody would have even known," said Borzick. She said Blake will not go to school tomorrow and she is not sure when he will return. 2198
