VISTA (CNS) - A homeless man accused of fatally stabbing a fellow transient outside an Escondido fast-food restaurant was ordered today to stand trial on a murder charge.John Christopher Burns, 48, is accused of stabbing Jose De Jesus Martinez in the neck shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 27, outside the Burger King on West Valley Parkway.According to preliminary hearing testimony, witnesses said Burns made statements indicating he believed the 32-year-old victim was trying to steal his bicycle, which had been left outside the restaurant.Martinez was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Escondido Police Department.Burns was arrested by San Diego County sheriff's deputies at the Pala Casino one day after Martinez's death.He's due back in court Sept. 2 for a Superior Court arraignment. 844

(CNS) - A 54-year-old Poway man accused of killing a young woman in Carlsbad 33 years ago pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of murder and rape.James Charles Kingery faces 33 years to life in state prison if convicted of all charges stemming from the killing of 26-year-old Julia Hernandez-Santiago, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.The victim's body was found on Oct. 10, 1987 on an ivy-covered embankment in the 2100 block of Alga Road, Carlsbad police spokesman Jodee Reyes said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death was asphyxiation due to strangulation.While a suspect was not identified at the time of the killing, investigators said technological advances eventually led to Kingery's arrest.In March, San Diego County sheriff's deputies arrested a man on narcotics and weapons violations and took a DNA sample from him, as required by law based on his alleged offenses, Reyes said. Then in May, the sheriff's crime lab notified Carlsbad police that DNA samples from the 1987 murder case were a match for Kingery, who was arrested July 22.A suspected motive for the killing has not been disclosed."When a murder goes unsolved, not only is justice delayed, but families are left in turmoil with no closure," District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The COVID-19 pandemic has hit communities hard in many different ways.A new survey shows it's also taken a toll on museums, with some not sure whether they'll be able to keep their doors open.At the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), you'd find all sorts of displays.The museum reopened in July after being closed roughly five months during the pandemic.“We've had just around 3,000 people come through the museum over the last three months,” Brad Tuggle, Director of Audience Development for Virginia MOCA, said. “Our museum is in a good spot relative to where it could be.”Tuggle told News 3 the museum had concerns at first.“There were a lot of furloughs with the museum; we went down to about 40% of our staff,” Tuggle said. “We didn't know if this pandemic was going to shut us down for three months or three years.”The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) surveyed museums to get a feel for impacts from the pandemic.“Anecdotally, we knew that museums were significantly impacted by the pandemic the second they had to close their doors,” AAM Director of Marketing and Communications Natanya Khashan said.Khashan told News 3 at least 750 museum directors responded to the survey in June.One-third of those responding were not confident they would be able to survive 16 months without additional financial relief, and 16% felt their organization was at a significant risk of permanent closure.AAM added, during the pandemic, 75% of museums stepped into roles as educators providing virtual education programs and experiences. Two-thirds of directors predicted cuts in education, programming, and other public services due to significant budget cuts.“It is really unfortunate, and the number isn't surprising because museums have to cut where they can in order to survive the impact of the pandemic,” Khashan said.Tuggle said funding from the City of Virginia Beach and other partners helped.“We had a lot of people on staff and the community that in that first month really stepped up,” he said.He added the museum also launched a virtual museum online for people during the pandemic.“It really gave us an avenue to get that artwork out to the world, which is what we're here for,” he said.As they continue on, Khashan hopes many will support other museums around the country during this time.“Their communities are going to need their museums more than ever to help sustain their economies and their educational systems, and to provide respite and healing as we look towards the recovery in the future,” she said.This story was first reported by Zak Dahlheimer at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2633

WASHINGTON (AP) — An inmate at a federal jail in New York City has tested positive for coronavirus, marking the first confirmed case in the federal prison system. The federal Bureau of Prisons says the man is housed at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and complained of chest pains on Thursday, a few days after he arrived at the facility. Officials say he was taken to a local hospital and was tested for COVID-19. The inmate was discharged from the hospital on Friday and returned to the jail, where he was immediately placed in isolation. The Bureau of Prisons learned Saturday he had tested positive for COVID-19. 638
