SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect wanted for breaking into an apartment in Imperial Beach and allegedly sexually assaulting a woman while she slept was in custody Thursday evening.Alfred Ruiz-Sandoval, 24, is accused of sneaking in through a window to fondle a woman in her home early the morning of Sept. 3 in the 1300 block of Hemlock Avenue, near Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge, according to Lt. Chad Boudreau of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The victim called 911 about 5 a.m. to report the invasion and sexual battery and told investigators the suspect ran from her home when she awoke. Officials believe the perpetrator got into the home by removing a screen from her open bedroom window.Currently, Ruiz-Sandoval is in federal custody on unrelated charges, and sheriff's detectives have obtained a separate arrest warrant, Boudreau said. 866

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday publicly identified a 71-year-old man who was killed in a collision at a Rancho Bernardo intersection.John Atcheson of San Diego was turning from Meandro Drive onto Rancho Bernardo Road when an eastbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck crashed into his 2018 Chevrolet Volt shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday, according the county Medical Examiner's Office.Medics took Atcheson to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead.The other motorist, a 23-year-old woman, was hospitalized for treatment of broken bones, police said. 590

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was struck and killed Sunday morning by a hit- and-run motorist in an SUV, in the Sherman Heights community of San Diego, a police officer said.The vehicle was going eastbound in the No. 1 lane in the 1800 block of Market Street, where a pedestrian was standing in the street or crossing Market Street at 1:55 a.m., said San Diego police officer Robert Heims.The vehicle struck the pedestrian and dragged him for approximately 100 feet eastbound on Market Street, Heims said.The motorist fled the location eastbound on Market Street and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.The vehicle was possibly a silver GMC Envoy or similar model, with front end damage.Anyone with any information regarding the death was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 798

Gavin Newsom reversed a parole board's decision to release a 59-year-old man who was a teenage gang member when he killed a San Diego police officer in 1978, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.Jesus Cecena was convicted of killing Officer Archie Buggs, 30, who was shot four times after he stopped a car driven by Cecena in the Skyline neighborhood.Cecena, then 17, fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the fallen officer and fired a final bullet into his head at point-blank range.Cecena, who is serving a life sentence, was granted parole in June, a decision that was heavily criticized by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.Newsom reversed the parole board's decision on Monday, marking the second time he has reversed a parole grant for Cecena. Former Gov. Jerry Brown also reversed parole grants for Cecena in 2014, 2016 and 2017.Newsom cited Cecena's gang motivations as a major factor in his decision."Mr. Cecena still is unwilling to acknowledge the underlying or causative factors that are in evidence, specifically that he belonged to a gang where killing a peace officer was seen as an ultimate goal, that a more senior and respected gang member handed him a firearm so he could kill Officer Buggs, and that killing Officer Buggs was a way for Mr. Cecena to gain more respect and power within his gang," Newsom wrote. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County environmental health officials issued a water contact closure Friday along the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Border Field State Park due to sewage-contaminated water. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health issued the closure Friday afternoon following rainfall this week that caused contaminated water in the Tijuana River to flow into U.S. waterways. County officials regularly issue beach closures after rainstorms due to contaminated flows from the river. The closure extends along the shoreline from the U.S.-Mexico border to the southern end of Seacoast Drive. County officials have placed water contact closure signs to alert beachgoers of the water's contamination. The signs will remain in place until water sampling meets state health standards.
